Why Yohn Royce wanted the Vale to go to war against the crown?

The Royces seem to be firm supporters of the Vale-Riverlands-Northern alliance that was cemented with the marriages of Ned and Catelyn, Jon Arryn and Lysa. They also have connections to the Starks through marriage. I think Bronze Yohn could actually be one of Sansa's strongest allies, if only she hadn't had her mind twisted by Littlefinger. I hope we get to see the Royce's (greater and lesser houses!) allying with Sansa in Winds

It is also worth pointing out that Yohn Royce was in King's Landing when Eddard was arrested and beheaded. He was actually told to stick around so he could escort Ned to the Wall.

When things went awry, he now has reasons to think Joffrey is rotten to the core.

Bronze Yohn remembers Jon Arryn, his old liege. He knows Lord Jon would NEVER abandon his foster-son Ned, Ned's children, or their shared in-laws the Tullys. Rising to rescue the invaded Riverlands and the imprisoned Lord Eddard was what Lysa was expected to do by the norms of the feudal society they live in. And if the Knights of the Vale had ridden over the mountains to Robb's aid at the beginning of the war, Tywin would have been crushed between Roose and Royce at the Battle of the Green Fork and the whole war would've ended in Lannister defeat right then and there. Instead Lysa sat on her hands and allowed her entire family to be destroyed. Everything Jon Arryn had worked and fought to build and protect was lost because of her. No wonder his loyal bannermen hate her guts.

The Royces of Runestone would.really make great Lords of the Eyrie now that Hoouse Arryn is all but gone. Does anyone know of Bronze Yohn was of an age with Ned? I had a feeling he was olderr and would have been a bit like the favourite uncle while Ned was in the Eyrie (bit like the Blackfiah)

There are a few honorable and powerful lords in the books who may yet play bigger roles in the upcoming events. Yohn Royce and Jason Mallister are among such, IMHO. (For example, who would have thought earlier that we were gonna see such a jewel as Lord Manderly in ADwD?)

It's Bronze Yohn, and the armor with the runes is an ancestral heirloom. He was a knight, as were his three sons. I don't think they keep the old gods.

Many various reasons, most of which relate to strong ties through marriage, friendship, and past alliances. Bronze Yohn being present during Robert and Neds deaths and immediately following this up by calling for swords in the Vale to join Robb is absolutely telling in and of itself.

So to sum up:

1. Jaime Lannister being named Warden of the East was rightly seen as an insult by the Vale and disillusioned them toward the Crown. If a child was unacceptable as Warden, King Robert should have at least named a Vale lord.

2. John Arryn was widely believed to have been murdered by the Lannisters, with Lysa encouraging this theory

3. Ned Stark was widely respected in the Vale and known as a man of honor

4. Lysa Arryn was a Tully by birth and many of her bannermen likely expected her to march to defend Riverrun against the Lannister/Baratheon menace

All of this makes for a pretty potent recipe for war. Only Lysa's paranoia stopped it

The part about Bronze Yohn being in 'open revolt' after the Red Wedding doesn't technically mean he still wants to go to war. I take that more to mean he was starting to pressure Lysa even more to give up her regency of the Vale to someone more... capable.

He may have known Ned as a ward in the Vale and he will have seen how much Jon Arryn loved Ned and Robert, his lord and he himself went to war when the Targaryen's demanded Ned'and Robert's heads. Now the Lannister's have done exactly that, he probably suspects them having a hand in Jon Arryn's death as well.

He may also expect to march simply because Lysa is of Tully birth and should be using her power to defend her house.

The Andals first landed in the Vale and killed the First Men nobility (the Griffin King and his court) there, which is why there are very few weirwoods in the Vale. So Royces are very very likely to be Andal in origin, despite that armor they have, which could be loot from a battle against the First Men.

The Royces and Starks have always thought of themselves as kin.. The Starks have intermarried the most with Royces than any other noble house in the last 300 years.. There is Stark blood in the Royces, and there are Royce blood in the Starks.. Lord Eddard Stark's great grandmother was the Lady Lorra Royce while his great grandaunt married into House Royce.. Ned Stark and Yohn Royce are probably 3rd cousins, so technically, aside from the Tullys, the Royces are the Starks closest living relatives.. Plus the fact the Ned was fostered in the Vale made him extremely close with Bronze Yohn..

Their close blood-ties and friendship coupled with the fact the both are blood of the first men and worship the Old Gods makes the bond even stronger.. All that plus the fact that the Vale itself believe that Jon Arryn was murdered by the Lannisters and that they are the de facto rulers of the realm who has started bullying others added insult to injury..

Joffrey beheading Ned Stark was what sealed the deal for Yohn Royce.. Him learning that his kinsman was wrongfully executed by the people he utterly hates and suspected to have killed his beloved liege lord was enough for him to practically put up an open revolt against Lysa's regency with other great families in his support..

I honestly believe that Yohn Royce will one day be Sansa's greatest supporter once she reveals herself.. He too like Sansa wants justice and revenge for his blood, his kin and his friends..

If he had disobeyed Lysa and joined the Starks he would be forswearing his vows to House Arryn and the Lords of the Vale are the most prickly of the Lords of the Seven Kingdoms about their honor so he would never betray his honor by disobeying his Lord or Lady.
