If you were the king/queen of the Seven Kingdoms

Recommended Posts

If you were King/Queen and you had taken the throne from Aerys II. And you had 6 children, 3 sons and 3 daughters

Who would be in your small council and with what positions? Kings/Queensguard? What changes would you make to the Seven Kingdoms? Would you want to join allegiances with another house? What laws would you put? What things would you change?

For the sake of interesting ideas, let's say that all the characters from the ASOIAF series were alive as well, with no deaths of anyone including historical characters.

For me, first of all:

King: Me

Queen: Cateyln Tully because I would be in my twenties during the war, and I would secure the Riverlands.

Children:

- Daeron

- Eddard

- Cregan

- Velena

- Sansa

- Arya

Hand of the King: Tywin Lannister or Bloodraven

Master of Laws: Stannis Baratheon

Master of Coin: Tyrion Lannister (ACOK)

Master of Ships: Davos Seaworth

Master of Whisperer's: Bloodraven (Three-Eyed Crow or normal, or Varys)

Grand Maester: Maester Luwin or Maester Aemon

Kingsguard commander: Ser Gerold Hightower 'The White Bull'

The rest of my Kingsguard:

1. Ser Gerold Hightower

2. Ser Arthur Dayne

3. Ser Oswell Whent

4. Ser Aemon the Dragonknight

5. Ser Barristan Selmy

6. Prince Oberyn Martell

7. Ser Ryman Redwyne

I would actually create a standing Royal Army that is only sworn to the king and no one else, similar to the Night's Watch. It would mainly consist of commonfolk, bastards, minor lords and even high lords who take an oath of celibacy and loyalty to the Iron Throne. I would have a three year training course to make them in top notch soldier's similar to the Golden Company - well trained, well-organised and loyal to the king. The Royal Army would have around 30,000 men in it normally.

I would also establish the Bank of the Seven Kingdoms, so we won't have to borrow from Essos and the Iron Bank. I would also not be a spender like Robert and only use the money saved by Aerys when needed. Half of the takes go the Bank, and the rest to the royal treasury.

I would also abolish the Targaryen succession laws of the Iron Throne and make it like normal Andal tradition: son, then daughter. I would also allow woman to be allowed to set up their own cadet branches of their house if they would like, with the permission of their father's or uncles or cousins. Their second sons could succeed to that branch.

I would also do the First Men way of dealing with treason: The man who passes the sentence should swing the sword and take away the position of Royal executioner.

I would be faithful to my wife, but be like adventurous and promiscuous in my youth so I can defy expectations.

I would marry my eldest son to Maegarey Tyrell when they are both a sixteen, securing the Reach and the Tyrells as Mace would have a grandson on the Iron Throne when I die.

I would allow my second son and third son to do as they please. I would set up cadet branches of my house for them if they wanted. I would probably recommend Cregan to join the Night's Watch.

I would marry my first daughter to House Stark.

I would marry my second daughter to House Martell

I would marry my third daughter to House Baratheon

I would give 100-200 men to the Night's Watch annually with new weapons, armor and money.

What about you guys???

So, everyone is alive, except Aerys... poor Aerys.

One question to TheBloodoftheSevenDragons are the people who died during the rebellion alive in this scenario and did all the events happen in it as well, like the sacking of Kings landing. Please answer this soon so I'm able to finish my post and post my reply to this topic.

King: Me (obvi)

Queen: Margery Tyrell (obvi)

Its hard choosing people as your children because people's personalities would change drastically if they were your son/daughter

I would want my sons and daughters to be based from my own imagination not someone else's

Small Council:

Hand of the King: regretfully i think i would have Tywin Lannister mostly because everyone seems to fear him and he commands a lot of control from his peers. I would however be a very involved king and not leave every duty to the hand whilst i eat, shit and whore my way to an early grave aha #loljkiwouldbefaithful

Master of Laws: Probably Renly Baratheon. He seemed like an open minded person and a pretty nice dude and able to play the game generally well. there is probably someone else out there that would be worthy of this position as well but i can't think of anyone.

Master of Coin: Yea I would probably agree with you in choosing Tyrion Lannister, he also seems a lot more loyal and less rebellious than littlefinger. But having him on the same council as Tywin might be problematic therefore if they didn't work out i would be forced to replace him with someone else such as a Tyrell or someone with proper knowledge in the field.

Master of Ships: I would probably have Euron Greyjoy, just to have a Greyjoy in Kingslanding. Nothing better than keeping all the great houses feeling like their included in the running of the kingdom.

Master of Whisperers: I would most likely pick Varys although i wouldn't let him persuade me too much and try not to talk to him much.

Grand Maester: I would get on of the Archmaesters from the Citadel, preferably one trained in as many arts as possible ( if that's possible) otherwise i would have Archmaester Marwyn for some magic in the court but probably Archmaester Ryam who specializes in economics, but if one of the other Archmaesters specializes in something i find more useful than the post is likely to change... it all really depends

Kingsguard Commander: Aemon the Dragonknight

Kingsguard:

1: Barristan Selmy

2: Arthur Dayne

3: Gerold Hightower

4: Robert Baratheon (he probs wouldn't be happy about that though)

5: Gregor Clegane

6: Sandor Clegane

7: Duncan the Tall

I like the idea of having a 'Kingdom Bank' as well. I also like the idea of having a royal army which would incorporate the gold cloaks. I would have four factions; Cavalry, Infantry (including archers), a miscellaneous faction (medics, engineers, pyromancers, magicians (if any) those sorts of people) and a secret service sort of division.

The Cavalry would be commanded by Rhaegar Targaryen

The Infantry would be Commanded by Bloodraven

The Miscellaneous faction would be commanded by a Maester specialized in warcraft such as Archmaester Walgrave

The Secret Service would be commanded by Stannis Baratheon in coherence with the Master of Whisperers, myself and the kings hand but will also be known to the rest of the small council.

I would also adapt the Dornish way of allowing the eldest child of mine, male or female to be the heir to the throne. This would be applied to the rest of the kingdom as well.

I would send as many prisoners to the wall as i could, without being to dramatic

I would also place a lot of emphasis in generating as much money for the crown as possible as fast as i can and then steadily improve the rest of the kingdom as much as i could such as developing infrastructure and encouraging education, etc...

I'm sure there is a lot of things im missing out on but this is all i can be bothered of thinking of at the moment

damn we need a new book

I agree, :wideeyed: but in the meantime:

So, i've just miraculously been made Queen due to Robert Baratheon's sudden death or equally sudden attack of common sense on the night before his coronation.

I suppose that means I'll have to marry Stannis to keep him quiet. I can't say I'm particularly happy about the idea, but I'm Queen and i have a duty to the realm to fufill.

I'm going to appoint Tywin Lannister as Hand, he seems competent and since i'm not going to be able to appease him by marrying his daughter, I've got to offer him something.

Laws: Jon Arryn, he seems clever and reliable and definitely worth having on my side.

Coins: Littlefinger, the man's a genius, if a twisted one.

Ships: My dear lord husband, Stannis Baratheon.

Whisperers: Varys, don't mess with the best.

Grand Maester: anybody but Pycelle. I'd ask Lord Stark to lend me Maester Luwin, or Maester Cressen could be a good plan.

The Queensguard:

Barristan Selmy and Jaime Lannister are certs. Ser Barristan has shown his mettle and Ser Jaime is young but seems keen. Lets see....Ser Brynden Tully, Ser Jorah Mormont (i may have to knight him first), Whorebane or Crowfood Umber (one of them), someone Dornish....Oberyn Martell? If Mace Tyrell has a younger brother i'd think about recruiting him, or failing that Victarion Greyjoy.

I'm changing the rules for the Queensguard, by the way, ladies are allowed in, and i'm abolishing the vow of celibacy (which should cheer up Oberyn Martell i'd imagine), you don't have to serve for life you can leave or retire with the Queen's permission, including if you inherit lands or titles.

I'd also recruit a group of Queen's Ladies, which would include Cersei Lannister, Lysa Arryn, Olenna Tyrell, Ellaria Sand, one of the older Mormont Girls...etc etc, we'd basically be a council of ladies.

I'd also start another council or regional wardens/lords paramount, etc, to give the various regions more of a say on how Westeros is run, sort of like a parliament. I'd call Lord Eddard Stark (possibly to chair it, he seems like a reasonable chap), Lord Wyman Manderley, Lord Howland Reed, Lord Yohn Royce, Lord Hoster Tully, Lord Mallister, Lord Balon Greyjoy, Lord Rodrick Harlaw, Lady Cersei Lannister (until her brother Lord Tyrion comes of age), Lord Tyrell, Lord HIghtower, Lord Tarly, Prince Doran Martell, and a whole bunch of people from the stormlands who i can't be bothered to name....oh gods...the Florents....and i suppose my lord husband....

Business would include various regional matters such as trade, security, justice, health and education...I'd everyone to set up schools for Smallfolk, with the help of septs/wisewomen/r'hllor temples whatever. I'd improve the roads and build more of them, and more bridges, especially on the Greenfork. I'd encourage my regional landlords to make sure that everyone had access to good food, shelter, medicine and education.

There'd be religious freedom, the old gods, new gods, red god and drowned god will all be held in respect in my king--queendom. No burning people without permission though...

I'd definitely look into who murdered poor Princess Elia and her kids as soon as possible. Ser Gregor Clegane? Off with his head!

I'd offer a pardon (not that they really need one as they're just kids), to Viserys and Daenerys Targaryen and have them made my wards and well treated.

Well, it looks like me and Stan have been blessed with six children (gods alone know how....) . The eldest boy will wed Lady Daenerys, the eldest girl Lord Viserys. The others: boy2: Maergaery Tyrell. boy 3: Sansa Stark girl2: (Ok, i'm, assuming that Jaime and Cersei continue their affair as normal, or at least as normally as can be expected....is it too much to expect that Joffrey might not turn out to be such a rabid little git if he's not born heir to the throne?) If Joffrey turns out to be more like Tommen she will be wed to Joff, if he's still a twat then....Olyvar Frey? Samwell Tarly? Robb Stark? or they can become Septas/wisewomen, priestesses of R'hllr/the drowned god, it's up to them.

I need an army or an armada, the first people i'm calling up are my Queensguard, Lord Stark, Lord Tarly and the Ironborn.

My heir is which ever child is the most suitable for the task.

Queen- Catelyn This has the slight problem of pissing off Tywin, since he would want me to marry Cersei, but i really don't want my wife to give me incest babies.

Hand- Jon Arryn, he seems a competent ruler but he would serve me, if i picked Tywin he would try to monopolise his rule.

Ships- Stannis, he is a great naval commander and shows competant leadership, he would give good advice and be loyal.

Coin- No idea

Laws- maybe Randall Tarly, it would appease the Tyrells and he seems committed to the position in DwD.

Whispers- Qyburn, why not? The guy is awesome (insane but still awesome).

Grand Maester- Luwin

I agree with the daughter before brother idea, a royal army sounds good but 10,000 members should be sufficient in peace time, no life long vows or celibacy or anything, just a vow to fight for the King and his peace for as long as they serve.

Kinda have to raise taxes which might piss people off, but I will improve infrastructure for the whole kingdoms and I'd build another bridge right next to the Twins just to piss lord Walder off. I'd also try to improve the literacy rate.

Essentially, i would do the same Robert did: party all the time, and let someone else to worry about the state affairs.

I also would honour my lord paramounts with my presence, in their castles and lands, for some weeks of feasts, jousts and hunts each year.

My third son would be kingsguard when my heir came of age, and so wouldn't marry anyone.

I would marry my first daughter to Viserys if he's willing to shut up about his birthright

If anything to switch, I'd grant Danaerys the Mistress of Ships position, and create a first-ever Dragonfleet, with Danaerys riding Drogon, Salador Saan riding Viserion, and Victarion (commanding a seafleet) riding Rhaegal.

If I were King of the Seven Kingdoms--not Queen, not Duke, not Prince.
My regal robes of the Seven Kingdoms would be satin, not cotton, not chintz.
I'd command each thing, be it fish or fowl.
With a woof and a woof and a royal growl--woof.

As I'd click my heel, all the trees would kneel.
And the Mountain bow and the bulls kowtow.
And the High Sparrow would take wing.
If I, if I, were King!

Are we back again to a "101 ways to transport your head from crown to spike" thread? I wonder if there will be more realistic and working suggestions than the last time we had one of these?

The idea of a royal army is also funny, I wonder how many dozens will get ready before the Westerosi bannermen storm and sack King's Landing?

It's kind of fun to start off with the assumption that you could get away with anything you want with no repercussions, but I don't understand why people don't then take it farther. Why not make yourself an absolute Emperor, flattening out the feudal system into direct immediacy for all lords? Or, even better, just take away all the titles, and demote all the lords to smallfolk overseers, with the same basic responsibilities of managing the land for you but none of the independent power? And then you can create an industrial economy overnight the same way Stalin did, invade the rest of the planet, then shift everyone to rocketry research and conquer the rest of the galaxy the same way the Master almost did in Doctor Who, and live happily ever after.
