Topics I've Started

  1. Westeros Resources

    11 July 2010 - 11:11 AM

I'm curious why I don't hear/read more discussion concerning the fight for resources on the Westeros continent.

Having recently read Mark C. Newton's Nights of Villjamur book, I've been thinking about how little mention or precedence Martin has (thus far) given this concern. The major reason why things are so desperate on the continent seems mainly to do with the machinations of the houses and their leaders fighting against one another. It's pretty stupid the houses are having a war when it is recognised that there's a long winter impending. Surely their biggest concern should be stocking up on supplies?

Resources won't exactly be plenty. The lack of things growing and all. ;)

Will more attention be given to this in aDwD's, or later?
  2. Uruguay vs Germany

    08 July 2010 - 02:28 PM

Not too much interest invested in this, but I'll be watching it on Saturday. I'm hoping for a great game to round off the tournament well. Hopefully it'll be a fine set up for the final on the following night. :)

German did it last time...will it happen again?

Both nation's have doubts concerning the health of their main strikers. Diego Forlan has a bit of a thigh injury, which forced him out of the last game before the end, and may prevent the striker from finishing tournament top scorer. And for the Germans, Klose has a back injury due to an aerial collision in the semi-final game and may miss the opportunity to match (or beat) Ronaldo's brilliant record of 15 World Cup goals.
  3. Stripped Bare Fiction

    07 July 2010 - 08:30 PM

Considering what fiction I like and what things in particular, etc. brought me to this point. I was arriving at the thought that I really do love it when an author digs deep into the consciousness of a character. I like characters that wear their hearts on their sleeves. Who are full of passion and ideas. Fiction that matters, damnit! I'm a little tired of reading half-hearted characterisation from some authors, so I figure this needs to be rectified. I like reading about characters that are vulnerable and I can get behind.

Biggest example that comes to mind would be the character of Daniel from Carlos Ruiz Zafon's the Shadow of the Wind. This book contained some expert detail in characterisation and I really felt for the guy. Another would be Akka in Bakker's PoN trilogy. What others am I missing out on?
  4. Nothing's On (TV)

    07 July 2010 - 07:52 PM

This is a thread created in the pursuit of 'good tv'. This goes for practically anything 'watchable' that holds a shred of intelligence and is worth tuning in for. If it weren't for sports, and the occasional dvd (that I could do without), I doubt I'd ever see a thing on the now LARGER and infinitely more AWESOME box. 'Cause everyone just has to have a large-screen TV, these days. Bah. I dare not look at our electric bill.

The only current TV shows that I am watching on a regular (but now irregular, due to their subsequent summer breaks) are 'the Big Bang Theory' and 'How I met your mother'. Both are reasonably funny comedy shows that deliver, usually, on a week-week basis. There is nothing else. What is currently running, anyway, that I am missing out on? I use this in my mind to keep me away from the box. I'm open to persuasion, however.

So, use this thread to drop your fellow squad/board member a line about what is coming out tonight/tomorrow/next-week/whenever. The range is infinite. From documentaries to science fiction. What, out there, are we potentially missing?
  5. Spain - Holland

    07 July 2010 - 03:21 PM

Tonight's result means it is Spain who progress to the 2010 World Cup final, to face Holland. Neither nation has won the tournament before.

Who'll be the eighth nation to win the World Cup?
