  1. Yeah - paper reviews and academic criticism can be harsh but nothing compared to fandom
  2. Just grabbed it in uk too. It's been on my "should i give it a go" solely because the title intrugues me. Sadly leckie's book isn't price matched in uk at moment.
  3. I bought this last month. Still seems too good to be true. Only minor catch for me is that it doesn't qualify for audiobook discount. I'll be reading these the old fashioned way.
  4. Mainly dead as "brexitcast" was soaking up my listening time prior to the longer extension. Great show by the way and nice to see a bit more personality and sense of fun showing with this crop of bbc political journalists/presenters. I've also started listening to "philosophise this" which reminds me a lot of "the history of room" but with philosophy as it's hook. There's over a hundred episodes so that's probably going to keep me busy for a while. For laughs I've been working my way through adam buxton podcast. Initially just for the "adam and Joe" episodes then guests of interest. He had quite a good one recently with Marlon James discussing his new book and the controversy around "the green book" oscar win. James crushed Joe's "small steps" defense quite convincingly. Interesting guy. Also listening to Geoff Norcott. He isn't everyone's cup of tea but i do enjoy a lot of his humour and it's good not to sit in an echo chamber. Certainly couldn't handle listening to non joking takes on brexit. He actually does quite a good section on male mental health where he admits his own problems and highlights all the "man-up" stigma surrounding male mental health. A good thing as I'm guessing a lot of his fans don't want to admit to such "weakness" so it's good there's some exposure to mental health in groups that probably need to be more aware of it. So keeping pretty busy in podcast land while waiting for the next Dan Carlin release. Main reason i just checked was because people usually mention him here and I'm always way my subscription alerts may be a few hours behind.
  5. Audible UK has the excellent "dogs of war" by Adrian Tchaikovsky for £1.99 today. Really well performed for those who are still wary of audiobooks with different voice actors for the POVS (each chapter is read by the actor who does that character not "switching actors for each voice")
  6. No problem, it's good to share recs for all those podcasts out there this thread is great for finding new ones to try
  7. The trump administration has really shook Carlin's foundations probably because he's frustrated at finally getting that out there president operating (essentially) outside the two party system. Other good history podcasts I've been listening to lately are "how to invent a country" which is a fascinating series looking at how countries like germany, USA and Netherlands came into existence/changed over time. They've all been good so far particularly Germany and the Netherlands where you realise other European powers deliberately stopped them from forming/growing for centuries. Looking forward to ones on south American nations. I also stumbled upon "cold war stories" on BBC that seems to cover a lot of the cold war in 15-20 minute segments. It's heavy on accounts from people who lived through the events which is always an interesting approach (and also important to get recordings of this accounts) Sadly I haven't been able to get into "the history of the world in 200 objects" latest project on religions which is a shame as I've enjoyed his other shows.
  8. Was just about to post my excitement at discovering that. Good topic as well and given it's recent history can understand why it's taken a while as he has a lot more sources to work with.
  9. Ah that one. I forgot it was a proper installment. It did feel like it could have been a lot shorter like way back when it would have been a 1 hour show tops
  10. Do you mean the hardcore history addendum shows? I don't think he's had a main one for a while? I've quite liked the interviews particularly the one with the ex high up military guy. His common sense shows highlights why he doesn't want to do shows at the moment. The thing is common sense wasn't only about the president and the system at play. It used to be about changes in law, foreign events, healthcare etc. While the current administration is a part of all those other topics it's not the only thing. I think he's too caught up in it to step back and realise he can discuss other matters. I suspect it's because most feedback he receives is about Trump.
  11. He really isn't a fan of Goring and that's saying something given his universal unpopularity. So entertaining listening to him list all his faults. It also seemed insane how Hitler gave utterly unqualified people such important jobs. He makes a good argument that Germany had an excellent military that was let down by the Nazis. Good start to his new approach.
  12. Some great catches there manhole! "which was better" format could certainly work as a short-form show as we know he loves to go off on "best army/general" asides.
  13. thanks for the youtube ideas regarding his appearances elsewhere. I agree with perfectionism getting in the way. I think that's why the interview style would help him as he wouldn't get the opportunity to obsessively plan and overthink things. It's pretty clear now that we've missed out on a few shows because they've gotten out of hand or he's decided they weren't working.
  14. I applaud his stance with it and agree with him that having special exceptions is a real slippery slope as you don't know who'll be an exception next. It's harder to fight fascism with an opposing convincing narrative than to simply silence it but it's a better way. It's a shame I think he's on the mark with how the internet is becoming a divisive element in society with or without active encouragement from other states. Seems promising regarding his comments on the history podcast. I know he's tried to do different less time consuming approaches before but hopefully he'll pull it of this time. I've actually enjoyed his interview approaches. I'd personally love it if he had some historians/fellow podcasters on to discuss a topic - a bit like the "in our time" format but ideally with people who have different takes/opinions. I think hearing Dan argue with someone would be fun. I'll have to see if he's done anything like that on someone else's show.
  15. I was looking on the common sense page - it hasn't got there yet. Good to be able to download it for listening on my phone. It's a good old rant but I do find his stance on free speech valid and almost noble these days. Although i get the feeling he's getting a lot of crap of listeners with some of his comments these days.
  16. he always seems to post something right at the point i stop checking every other day! Almost finished Mike Duncan's book - well worth it so far and while it lacks the humour if the podcast it's not just a rehash of earlier material EDIT: oddly I can't find it on his actual site. youtube link will have to suffice
  17. Is that where the lack of hair on the ballsacks is considered evidence? On a more podcast related note has anyone had the chance of reading Mike Duncan's book on Rome? I'm curious about it and would like to support him for all the entertainment he's provided me. Although I was wondering whether it differs greatly from the podcast or not?
  18. It's not a podcast but "American Vandal" sounds like the TV equivalent of what you're looking for. Puerile crime treat deadly seriously and lots of utterly ridiculous conspiracies.
  19. It feels very much like an inbetween-qel to his final installment of "Death throes of the republic". It sort of felt like it could have just been called "Caesar's invasion of Gaul" to be honest. It didn't really stray that far away from his involvement. He did however make it very clear that there are many ways of pronouncing Belgay. Not his strongest but still enjoyable.
  20. makes me wonder how much stuff we've missed out on. I think in some cases it mutates into a different show eg I think he said his "death throes of the republic" was initially meant to be a short episode on Cleopatra but he found himself getting stuck down a spiral of explaining the background. Maybe at some point he'll do something with the almost finished podcasts he abandoned as I get the feeling they'd be ok. Although i respect him for having a high personal level of quality control - it's probably why he has such a good track record.
  21. Yeah as I was writing it I realised that his World War one and two material are still some of my favourites. I'm about an hour in and he still has it. I'm curious as to whether this was the one he gave an update on in a recent "common sense" where it almost sounded like he was going to bin the whole project? I can't help but think of him as the GRRM of podcasts with his appeal, his increasing delays/volume and now his perfectionism where he potentially bins months of work because it doesn't "work". It's just a shame he can't break installments into episodes these days. 6 hours is a lot of material and he could have easily released 1 hour every month and people wouldn't notice the gaps as much. I guess he records these in one epic session though and feels it should go out that way. His choice, I guess we are getting a netflix version of podcasting from him. But he could have released this over the next few months and create the illusion of folk being updated regularly and him working on the next epic. For me it doesn't matter - I regularly check his site anyhow (should just subscribe) but these gaps could be bad for more casual listeners in that they forget about him.
  22. I just checked at lunchtime and there wasn't. Could have been listening to it on my jog! ooh Celtic Holocaust. That should be interesting. I think i prefer his "ancient" stuff in terms of initial interest (although he ususally wins me over with whatever period he picks).
  23. Could be a platform issue. It's terrible through my TV and laptop. Always wants me signing in/updating profiles and seems really tricky to find anything live (I got mixed up with the early statement about catch-up vs live). I'll give it a go through my Xbox/PS in case it's more user friendly there as I'd like to be able to watch C4 if only for the news and F1. As it is livestream apps are more straight-forward. I think my Smart TV is showing age-related senility. For some reason I no longer have the option of subtitles (unless close-captioned) on Netflix. If I watch netflix on my laptop i get subtitles. Watch it on the TV - I either have to have close captioned subtitles for everything (which I find distracting when actors are speaking english) or none at all (which makes Narcos a challenge). The weird thing is it never used to be an issue via the tv.
  24. I guess it will be out in January - in a heated tent. Looks like the BBC have been clever in the sense they had safety clauses to make the show toxic if it went to another channel (which is becoming apparent when you see what Clarkson can't do with his amazon Top Gear car show). It sounds even more like this was just bought so the BBC had one less hit if the buyers didn't even bother ensuring the presenters came with the concept. That or channel 4 re just a bit sloppy with this sort of thing. I'm still wondering why they bothered with F1 when within a few years they won't even be able to show full races - something I'm sure was part of the BBC's decision to drop it.
  25. Hadn't thought of it that way. Spending 25 million in order to screw the BBC out of more and not really caring whether they'd turn a profit directly from the show. I guess they can make that back from ads if it remains popular but it depends on how familiar the concept will remain if presenters continue to bail. I suspect Mel and Sue have an existing contract with the BBC for other shows, etc so it's an easier decision for them. The "bakers" might not have as many opportunities outside presenting that type of show and may be hoping Channel 4 "sweeten" the deal by offerring them moire money to stay with the show. You can't have your cake and eat it
