Borderlands is an upcoming American science fiction action comedy film directed by Eli Roth, who co-wrote the screenplay with Joe Crombie, based on the video game series of the same name developed by Gearbox Software.

    Cast

Additionally, Penn Jillette has a cameo in the film as a preacher overseeing a wedding, after voicing Pain in the video game Borderlands 3 (2019).

Well at least Claptrap is as annoying and unfunny as he is in the games, so they got that part right.

Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving was a lot of fun. It’s definitely a formulaic slasher, but it’s done pretty well. It has some really creative kills. It’s crazy that this is now the 3rd movie to be made out of the fake Grindhouse trailers.

Fingers crossed for Werewolf Women of the SS starring Nic Cage as Fu Manchu.

It's such a fun concept, but I'm frustrated at how the game pads out the length by forcing me to run around, level myself up, level my gangs up, and do random hunts for templars, yet the game hasn't even explained (at least not yet) very well who the siblings are, who their father was, etc. We get a bit of exposition ("Father would've wanted...") but I have no idea who their father is nor why I should care. It doesn't set up emotional stakes that matter.

I agree on that, the story isn't great and just devolves into the usual Assassin's Creed-nonsense.

If you'll allow me to pursue this tangent ever so briefly: YEARS ago, talking back to around 02 or 03, the Onion did a video where they put together clips of Dubya talking and declaring "the American project...is over. We've had a good run, but...we're going to shut down".

I've been trying to find this video for flipping ever. Any chance you've seen or heard of this?

Meanwhile, back on videogames: Holy Shit is AC: Syndicate gorgeous but utterly, utterly tedious. Zones are blocked off by one's level, and that means an insane amount of time is spent...running around killing red coats. This just seems borderline absurd. From those who've played this game (which, btw, has a gorgeous Austin Wintory score), what are their thoughts on it?

I enjoyed Syndicate. It was a bit tedious but I quite enjoyed the gameplay loop so no problems there. The big assassination-missions were also a lot of fun and the highlight of the game for me. The Jack the Ripper dlc was also a lot of fun.

  5. My numbers are rookie numbers compared to some of you. I've had Steam since Skyrim was released in 2011 and my top 10 is:

    1. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - 454,2 hours

    2. Total War: Shogun 2 - 156.4 hours

    3. Saint's Row the Third - 67,4 hours

    4. Far Cry 3 - 57,5 hours (impressive considering that I never made it off the first island)

    5. Knights of the Old Republic - 51,6 hours

    6. Thrones of Brittania: A Total War Saga - 5,4 hours

    7. Fallout New Vegas - 49,8 hours

    8. The Banner Saga 2 - 48,7 hours

    9. Saint's Row 4 - 41 hours

    10. Call of Juarez: Gunslinger - 38,4 hours

A few specialists who've dealt with human trafficking have publicly come out and said that apparently this movie gets *a lot* wrong.

Also: is Caviezel still a giant anti-vaxxer, ABBA Jesus douche?

Caviezel is a legit Q-Anon loon now, obsessed with blood libel and everything.

I can highly recommend the episode that the Q-Anon Anonymous Podcast did on him: Into the Cavortex.

Yeah, seeing that film in a theatre back in 2007 was pretty cool actually.

I think Bay was being much more clever and a hell of a lot more cynical in the later films than he was being given credit for. Not Verhoven levels of satire but still.

As someone who loved the transformers as a kid, seeing that opening scene where the helicopter-decepticon wrecks the air base in cinema, was pretty fucking awesome.

Too bad the rest of the movie doesn't hold up to that scene though.

(Wikipedia tells me the screenwriter claims that Taabe's spirit would be reincarnated as Billy Sole from the original film.)

Man, that spirit has shit luck.

I broke my 90s binge with the help of Ridley Scot. The latest trailer for his new Napoleon film reminded me of the fact that there is a film of his I had never watched and which is set in the Napoleonic era, The Duellists, his debut from way back in 1977.

This film has been on my watchlist for ages, but I somehow never got around to it. Big mistake as it turns out, because I absolutely adored it. Ridley had been making a lot of commercials before he started this film, which is the only explanation I can give for how assured his directing of his first film is.

It's gorgeous throughout (especially the final scenes of the film, which will stick with me for a while) and it does an excellent job evoking the spirit of the era through its costumes, hairstyles and locations. The actors are great in it of course, the fencing is amongst the most impressive I have seen and the story is possessed of a narrative propulsion that is a hallmark of the best Ridley Scot films.

Given the budgetary constraints Ridley was working on, this was a tour de force and is definitely worthy of comparison to his other historical epics that came later.

He's made a few atrocious films and one or two overrated classics, but when Ridley Scot gets it right, he hits the bull's eye big-time.

Coming back to @Tywin et al.'s comment from the last thread, the bolded is not saying much. There are like 10 well-known films set on a submarine? :P

Ridley Scott has has made so many movies that it's hard to keep track of them sometimes. But I'd rank The Duellists as one of his best of his even after looking at his filmography at Wikipedia to refresh my memory.

Watched Indiana Jones and the search for Metamucil this weekend. Have to say it was better than I expected. I'd say it's better than the last two and not as good as the original two.  They did some CGI de-aging and it looked pretty good, to me anyway.  For me, if we could just delete parts 3-4 and have only 1-2-5 it would strengthen the franchise as a whole. Don't get me wrong, The Last Crusade wasn't bad and maybe I need to go back and watch it, I just had such a bad taste in my mouth from the Chrystal skull garbage that it may have effected my opinion on the other one.

Being who I am I of course watched Raiders of the Lost Ark this weekend and I still enjoy it. Love the old fashioned punch sound they use in this when Indy hits someone, and yes, that same sound is used in the new one.

The Last Crusade is just a Raiders retread anyway.
