  1. It seems to me that the HoBW is more an intelligence agency than an organisation of assassins per sé. While they do seem to kill people on request (for prices so exorbitant that it mostly dissuades people from using their services), their main purpose seems to be to gather intel. Arya is mainly being trained for that purpose. She spies and reports back her findings to the HOBW. There are indications that she’ll spend time with/as a concubine too, which would bring her in a position of spending time with high ranking men and gathering intel that way. I believe the people the HOBW takes out are mostly people they need out of the way, rather than people they’re actually hired to kill. I think that - while the story the kindly man told Arya about the old man she had to kill, might be true- it’s probably not the reason they decided to take him out. I think high ranking members go on longer missions to gather intel and have a lot more freedom to make their own decisions. Note that Arya isn’t exactly punished when she killed Dareon, because she did bring back something useful (good boots are hard to find), it’s quite possible that Dareon had some documents stuffed in his boots too, but that is speculation. In any case Arya is levelled up in her training for killing a man and subsequently bringing back something useful. In other words: they’re allowing Arya to make a kill if she believes it’s justified. Jaqen appears to either have gone rogue or be on a long mission, and I think it’s the latter. What we know is that Jaqen was: 1. In the black cells in KL. It’s likely he was in KL to spy on someone, though it’s unclear who. But I have a suspicion. 2. was on his way to the wall. I’m absolutely certain that Jaqen was only in the black cells because he wanted to be as a way to get to the wall/north. 3 went to OT and acquired a fancy key. The third point seems to indicate that he is looking for certain scrolls or documents. Both WF and the wall have rare scrolls, and I’m sure the royal library does as well. He seems to kill anyone he needs to to proceed on his quest, but he does seem to need a reason to justify killing people. He needs Pate to first betray his duty before killing him, when he could’ve just killed Pate and stolen the key himself. He put the choice to die in Pate’s hands so to speak. Now what’s interesting is that Pate refers to him as ‘the alchemist’, which implies that the face he used when parting ways with Arya was that of an alchemist, which makes me think he was in KL to spy on/infiltrate the alchemist’s guild. This would make sense given that they surely also have rare old scrolls. Long story short; I think Jaqen is on an intelligence mission to gather information, and isn’t hired to kill anyone.
  2. I think it could be about a new Dunk &Egg novella. We know blue winter roses are linked to more Stark maidens, and he has announced he plans to write more Dunk&Egg novellas and F&B 2. I can imagine the wolves of WF(is that all the working title?) having blue roses mentioned. I can see him getting motivated to write that before TWOW. I’m sure a lot of people would hate that, but I’d rather have him write something that not write TWOW. And maybe, just maybe at some point being able to write something he actually still enjoys writing, will bring back his motivation to finish ASOIAF. Or otherwise writing something he does enjoy writing will finally help him admit that he doesn’t want to, or can’t finish ASOIAF, and just end our misery.
  3. LF is an opportunist. He gathers intel to use at a point that is most beneficial to his goals. Having a secret like that come out without there being something to gain for him, would be a major loss as it’s a big card to play. We know that LF wanted the following things: 1. Become a lord of something big like HH. He needed the war to create a situation where he could be awarded with HH. Note that he was only awarded such an important title because he SEEMED harmless, and because HH was in ruins and occupied and seemingly useless to him. 2. Marry someone important to gain real power. LF needed HH to be able to marry Lysa. His real objective was probably to marry Cat, but he always kept Lysa as an easy substitute. His focus has now clearly shifted to Sansa, but before that his desired prize was definitely Cat. 3. In order to be able to marry Cat, Ned would have to die. The best way to do that, would be to get Ned to come to KL, and the way to get him there was by killing Jon Arryn. Being the opportunist he is, he never did that until it became necessary to keep his other cards. 4. I believe he wanted Robert dead at the right moment to kickstart a war. What LF wanted was a child king on the throne, who would be easily manipulated, with a ditto mother. Plus a war to open up the opportunities for titles, and to weaken all the major noble houses. in order to make that happen he needed to use the invest in a way that would make him gain as much as possible from it. To make that happen, he needed Stannis out of the city, so he couldn’t grab the power after Robert’s death, hence Jon Arryn needed to die, to make Stannis flee with his knowledge. He then needed the information to reach Cersei in a way that would make her kill Robert. Hence he needed Cersei to find out that Ned had found out about the incest. That would make her get rid of both Robert and Ned. I’m not sure if he expected Ned to tell het himself, but he definitely led Ned to the information in to get both him and Robert killed.
  4. I have considered Varys, because Lysono Maar reminds me strongly of him. He doesn't seem to be Varys though. Varys is generally described as being plump, and I don't recognise that in the description of lysono. I don't think it would be Varys in disguise either, seems Varys seems to prefer dressing up as rather unnoticeable creatures. Besides that, Varys' disguises seem to conceal his identity a bit, but aren't faceless men good. If people take a second look at him they generally recognise him, which is probably why he dresses up as unnoticeable characters. In this disguise JonCon, being Aerys' former hand would definitely have recognised him. I don't think he's one of Varys ' spies either, since he doesn't fit into the little birds network idea. He might (a big MIGHT)be an ex little bird, a big bird so to say, but I don't think he'd be do obvious then. In my opinion the only thing that could link him toVarys, is that he could possibly be a eunuch, but at the moment I can't really see the purpose of that either, and not every effeminate guy is a eunuch of course. He's probably from Lys though, like Varys, but that still doesn't make him Varys, or means there's a connection. Except for the Varys vibe he has about him there are no real Varys hints. I'm certain Varys has spies in the Golden Company though, I just don't think lysono is one of them.
  5. @Lord Varys I agree that Lysono's involvement in the capturing of Storm's End is a bit far farfetched. However, I don't think Euron's involvement is. We don't know how much he does or doesn't know about anything, only that he might have some sort of foresight, or wizards. Euron could also want lysono to find something in Storm's End, if indeed there is a connection. We know he's interested in magical items. I've seen a lot of people speculate about whether or not a septon would believe in other gods, but I think the point of that passage is the mentioning of the storm and the sea God, and link Lysono (or something else in this chapter) to (probably) the ironborn. That also places Doran's question -why these storms never reached Dorne - in a different perspective. The ironborn never had much interest in raiding Dorne, but there might also be a more magical protection against the more magical ironborn aspects; sea and storm. Edit: Euron (or someone else) might also have had lysono infiltrate in the Golden Company without any knowledge of Aegon. It was known for quite some time that they were waiting for something. Anyone with that knowledge, who's smart enough, would like to have a spy there.
  6. Has anyone else noticed the Euron hints in this chapter? 1. The septon mentioned the 'stolen' daughter of two gods, which are the stormgod and the seagod respectively. If I remember correctly. Who believe in those 2 gods? The ironborn! 2. Lysono Maar is a strange and exotic figure wearing lots of jewellery who surrounds himself by what appear to be mutes. Now who else surrounds himself by weird, exotic looking people and mutes? Our dear friend Euron! I know this is a bit crackpot, but it stood out to me. Euron could have found some long forgotten info on capturing Storm's End, and lysono might be the reason why Aegon actually managed to capture the impregnable place. Haldon halfmaester seems surprised they don't know it yet, which seems to imply that Lysono must have known already. The question is: why would Euron have someone infiltrate the Golden Company, and support Aegon if he's after marrying Dany? I believe he might want to prepare the path for Dany by establishing the first Targ territories in Westeros, only to have Aegon killed (by Lysono) later, and take over his supporters with Dany. Aegon supporters cannot go back to supporting the Lannisters or Tyrells so easily after joining a Targ, because of treason, so joining another Targ would be the safer option. I know this is all highly speculative, but it doesn't seem entirely unlikely, and since Lysono must be working for somebody (must be, because both Arianne and Jon feel uneasy about him) and because Arianne thinks so explicitly about storm and seagod, Euron seems a likely candidate. Now I wonder why the storm and seagod never reach Dorne...
