iolahardy
Why did Ned just accept that he was a traitor instead of demanding a trial by combat? Yes, he accepted it for his daughters but why not take a chance & try to prove your innocence? After all what life could the daughters of a traitor have in a city which was ruled by people like Cersei & Joffrey? Instead why not take a chance & try to prove your innocence. Also, he was a renowned warrior himself. He could have fought at his own trial (if that is allowed). If there can be trials held for charges of murder, regicide, deicide, etc then surely a person guilty of treason too can have a trial by combat. Joffrey only asked for his beheading once he admitted of having committed treason. If he had asked for a trial I am sure Joffrey & Cersei would have had no choice but to grant it to him. Was it a wise decision to blindly accept the Spider's advice & word, especially when he knew that Varys is not at all reliable?
CassBlackfyre
Trial by combat is a Seven tradition, Eddard kept the Old Gods Eddard was injured badly, and kept in a cell with barely any food or water for days. Why take a trial by combat, that he would obviously lose, fighting either Jaime or Barristan selmy, or the Hound. when he was sure he was going home to the North, to the wall, to see Benjen and Jon. Why risk it?
Dryhtscipe
Regardless of religious issues, Jaime would have killed him. Even when he hadn't been locked in a cell for some time.

Jaime is in the riverlands. And the real question is why didn't Eddard demand a trial in general. And Ned isn't really all that great of a fighter regardless

Cravensbayne
Ned vs anyone is like a wet dream to me...Alas, he was too honorable to kill some foos (which obviously would go down because Ned is a BOSS) and took the Northerner's way out. Never go south of the Neck....

Never go south of the Neck....Yeah Ned vs Anyone would be pretty cool...if he was healthy. Ned was in pitiful shape when he met his end. Busted leg, malnourished, and feverish, I don't think it would have been an honorable fight at all.

Why risk it? That is what Varys said, but was Varys reliable. In Ned's opinion Varys was as bad as Baelish, who had so recently betrayed him. @a seven tradition: yeah maybe this was his reason
iolahardy
Yes, sure Ned could demand a trial by combat. We all know how well his brother Brandon's trial went... That was Aerys, this was Joffrey. And Joffrey does know how that ended. And if we apply one rule to all, no one would go for trial by combats after that incident. Aleksei
At full strength Ned was actually a very good fighter -- an even match for Jaime, though probably not for Gregor Clegane (to bring a man like Clegane down you need to treat him as a charging bull and use a style like Bronn's or the Red Viper's -- I doubt Ned had the presence of mind to realize that). He was very weak though. A regular trial would have been a mummer's farce.

Arthur Dayne's Honor
I just want to know where Jamie's reputation as a badass sword fighter comes from...Barristan himself thinks this when he says Tumcho is the most skilled swordsmen since Jaime Lannister, or something similar. Even if Howland landed the killing blow to even hold your own against someone like that put's you above average.

Arthur Dayne's Honor
Two against one? Not so much.and we don't even know if that's how the fight started. Maybe it was Ned, Howland, and one of Ned's other companions vs Arthur.
