February Reads! Winter Is Here!

I know it's juvenile of me, but the first thing that comes to mind when I see "fingersmith" makes me giggle.

You are not the only one

Started The Night Watch last night, and for some reason it's not what I expected, but I'm enjoying it so far.

Fingersmith! I've only watched the movie and I will never forget it: I orinally thought I was about to watch your average period piece... so I was kind of surprised by the heroines' preferences. :stunned: :wideeyed: Was truly glad that I hadn't invited my mother to watch it with me.

The movie was also the first time I came across the word "fingersmith"... and because of that it's not and never will be a talented thief or pickpocket for me; when I hear or see it somewhere I only ever think a "lady pleasing other lady with hand involved". Can't help it.

I finally got my hands on The Book Thief and I will likely get down to it as soon as I finish the book I'm currently reading, The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey. I hope it's going to be as great as everybody says it is because I haven't even gone to watch the movie just not to spoil the experience for me.

Loved The Book Thief. Was my favorite read last year, probably of the past few years.

Just finished Red Rising. Thought it was great and lived up to the hype it's getting. Many similarities to the Hunger Games, but I liked it a whole lot more.

Would you recommend the series overall? I just read The Thorn Birds for my book club and really loved it, so I'm wondering if I should pick up some of her other works or if she's one of those authors that just has one stellar magnum opus.

Definitely. Excellent series. Dense but totally worth it if you have any interest in the Roman Republic.

This is just me, but I think it is outstanding, and I'm not much of a vampire fan per se. Enjoy.

I picked up Deadhouse Gates today, so I'm going for it. Won't go on if it isn't a step up from Gardens of the Moon for me.

One of my favorites of the Malazan books. I'd be surprised if you didn't like it if you made it through Gardens of the Moon.

I liked the start of it more than the rest. I enjoyed the style, but I have to say that "bad-ass-with-a-heart-of-gold-and-a-secret-pain" is one stereotype I'm getting tired of.

Yeah, I can see that being a problem if you encounter it more than once, maybe twice a year as a main character.

I am sure he regrets taking a shot on them now that he knows that. :)

I didn't realise they made a film of Fingersmith - tbh, the book is hardly explicit, I was expecting a lot more after reading some reviews. Seems to me that it's a decent story, and some of the main characters are gay :dunno: The Book Thief is fantastic, I absolutely loved it. Hoping to see the film at some point soon.

currently reading "The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside the Room, The Greatest Bad Movie Ever Made"

How is it? I spotted it in the library and have been itching to get it, except I already have 50 odd books out and lying around...

I'm enjoying it so far. Assuming it's fairly accurate, Tommy is just as insane as you feel he is from the Movie.

I finished Revolutionary Russia, 1891-1991: A History by Orlando Figes yesterday. Figes looked at the Russian Revolution as a 100-year epoch going through three generation phases instead of a singular moment like the October Revolution or only through Lenin's death. It was a fascinating and an informative history of the pre-Soviet and Soviet period of Russian history by a historian who wasn't biased by criticism or an apologist of socialism. This book will officially be published in April.

I started The Bohemians: Mark Twain and the San Francisco Writers who Reinvented American Literature by Ben Tarnoff last night. This is an Advance Uncorrected Proofs edition of a book that will be officially published on March 24.

Bohemians is the third consecutive book in which I won via giveaways by either Goodreads or LibraryThing since all three arrived within an eight day period. After I finish Bohemians I'll be reading an anthology of Greek historians.

I finished the Book of Deuteronomy during my read through of The Bible on Wednesday and have been going through Joshua since.

The Red Knight by K.T. Davies was meh for me. So far this year, I haven't read a good fantasy book yet.

Going to read The Sea and Civilization: A Maritime History of the World by Lincoln Paine next. For history and nautical enthusiasts like me, I can't wait to dive into it.

This weekend I read all the books from The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare, I was pretty satisfied, a good series.

I also tried again to read Perdido Street Station, this time, after my first attempt(where I reached 15 pages) I read around 50 pages and I just can't read it. The world of Bas-Lag, or rather, it's species, it's what's putting me of. I just don't like them. I guess I'll be content forgetting about it for a couple of years and 'rediscover' it then and find it was the best book ever(or so I hope).

I'll start reading next: Crime and Punishemt(which is long due for me), Sinai Tapestry and My Name is Asher Lev. If the latter two are as good as they seem to be, I'll read them by wednesday, posting the next books on my list here. The first one will take me ages to read since I found it really boring the first time I tried reading it.
