True Detective Thread VII... or is it Thread I? Time is a circle

I missed that, where is it mentioned?

I thought that was pretty obvious, actually. When Marty and Rust ask the old black woman about any of the extended Tuttle family who may have had burns on their face, Childress is the name she mentions.

eta: Ruiner beat me to it.

In his defense I don't think that's what happened. He thought the idea that if Rust had ignored Marty's honking and just spoken to the guy for another few minutes he would have cracked the case was absurd. Assuming we're talking about the same guy. There have been a lot of these threads.

Exactly!!!

The old black woman who worked for Tuttle mentioned a kid with scars, that his father did likely did it, was Tuttle's grandson and likely a Childress or L -something (didn't catch the other name she threw out there).

I'm in your boat. I really fell in love with this series during the first three episodes. The deliberate pace, the cinematography, the slow burn of the investigation, the interplay of the two leads - that's what really drew me in. Episode 4 was the beginning of the end of all that, and while that episode was compelling in its own way, it felt like a different show. But after the beginning of episode five, everything has begun to seem so utterly conventional. I was particularly unimpressed with the presentation of Rust's break-ins of the Tuttle houses (although I loved the shot of the three Rusts rifling through Tuttle's office). Much like my problems with Episode 4, it was all so very mechanical and remote. There's no real build up to it; it's presented matter of factly; there's no tension, and it just so happens to yield just enough information to completely confirm the conspiracy and convince Marty and leaves out just enough to provide some mystery to get us through the last episode.

Not sure what is expected at this point. It was always going to be conventional. Tension will be in the beginning when you don't know anything and then you'll get release at the end. The pacing of the show, outside of that one 6 minute clip in episode 4 (which was a release of the tension from the first 3.5 episodes...very deliberate), has been relatively the same and while this past episode suffers slightly from not having the interview scenes, I think it's done a very good job of moving the story along.

The thing is, this isn't a new story. This is how these stories go and that's how it should go. What I enjoy about this is the level of execution is unbelievable and everything that we find out was there for us to figure out but not in a completely obvious way. I still find this show brilliant but maybe it's because I never expected anything truly innovative from it.

All Mart's daughters had to do was see pictures or video like Tuttle had, they do not necessarily have to have been victims.

So they could have seen pictures at Father-in-law Herbert's house or at Marty's.

Some things are best left not tied up.

What if Marty was one of the masked men and Maggie was a victim long ago. I do not think so but you never know, they do not have time for that kind of reveal or irony.

So what we got is:

Rev. Tuttle = dead child porn/molester

2 Ledoux = dead meth lab guys connected to man w scars and/or 'Giant'

Gov. Tuttle = ????

Sheriff Childress = cover-up + ?

Deputy Childress "

Errol Childress ?????

Det./Sheriff Geraci = coverup + ?

We need 5 guys or we need 5 guys + 3 younger guys = 8

Or there are 5 masks and different people wear em over the year making lots of suspects

Somehow I just feel there will be no trial. Marty and Rust are committed to this one.

They'll take everybody down.

Kinda makes you wonder who burned the church before an if this hasn't all happened before.

By the way the 'pirate' thing seems like a throwaway line that NP couldn't resist

Very much unlikely. His reaction, like his reaction at Ledoux's, was way too visceral for him to have any clue what he was going to see on that tape. Marty isn't involved with the bad guys, he's one of the "heroes" of the story.

Thanks to everyone for reminding me where they said lawnmower man was a Childress. One more question, was it Marie Fontenote who provided the description of the green-eared spaghetti monster? Or was that another little girl?

Marty is not involved with the bad guys???? He's darn near close to the only guy in the force that isn't involved.

My point was if marty wore mask for courier de mardi gras, and Maggie had been a crowned maiden, but they were both part of the generic festival without all the atrocity.

Is he? Seems pretty clear that the direction to cover everything up is coming from the very top (Governor, Senator, high up Reverend). That doesn't mean that people down below are actually involved. We've had confirmation that one guy knew something (guy they have on the boat) but that's about it. The other guy confirmed involved (Childress) was a local parish sheriff and then there is the whole Commander Speece which is likely. Other than that, not sure anyone else is involved.

I mean, I guess it's possible about Marty but that seems to be a leap that doesn't add much. Either Marty was directly involved or not. Indirectly involved seems to be pointless at this stage.

Marty and Cohle both have cancer: butt and lung. This is interesting because we have two semi-nihilists preparing themselves. Saying goodbyes and finishing unfinished business. Purifying themselves. They are both in Gethsemane now.

Maggie was in the institution and painted the original mural and that is why the small one was hanging over her side of the bed.

Marty likes crazy " " and Maggie is no exception

there gonna be a gunfight and Robert Doumain will bring it home.

1) Have to admit that almost every time I see a dead baby in a microwave it bums me out a bit.
2) I see by his Match.com account that Marty is still trolling for crazy pussy.
3) What was on that disturbing videotape in the storage shed? My guess is next week's episode of "Girls".
4) If Marty buys his daughter's art, I bet there's all kinds of stars and spirals in it. Christ. This show.
5) I want more of Rust awkwardly attempting to make small talk with Marty. "So, uh. Did you catch the Saints game last week?" "Is it humid out or what?" Shit like that.
6) Speaking of that, seeing the replay of Matthew accepting his academy award and thanking God was a funny contrast.
7) If the Academy Awards were drowning, I'd throw them a fucking barbell.
8) This week was a fairly weak episode, but I think next week's will be cray-cray. Get your jumper cables ready.
9) I think what I like about this cult is that they're committed to excellence. Sure, any cult can dress up like animals, lead a child out into the woods, and ritualistically rape her. But, very few will tape it so they can review it later and make improvements.

At this point, I'm almost hoping they don't tie everything up into a neat little bow. It's certainly possible that Maggie's father is involved with the cult and that Hart's daughter was sexually assaulted by them. They've laid more than enough groundwork to substantiate the connection. But given that we've only seen her father once, and that Hart's daughter has been such a relatively minor character, barely sketched out, who cares? It may be true, but it's dramatically inert at this point. It would definitely be a "reveal" - but at this point, hardly a gut punch.

Is there really more than enough groundwork to substantiate Maggie's father's connection to the cult? The only thing I recall at this moment is that he complained about 'kids these days' with the make up and sex comment. Which even Marty mentioned is something that probably every old man said at some point. Plus, he's not connected to the Tuttle or Childress families as far as we know.

IMO, any time spent establishing his connection to the cult in the finale is time wasted, except that it serves to vindicate Marty's bad parenting to some extent.

Another thing to remember about Audrey is that she did not attend a Tuttle school, unlike (correct me if I'm wrong) all the other victims that we've seen so far. But we know that some of those schools closed down before the program was shut, it's possible that one of the girls that went there was transferred to Audrey's school.

Nothing more to substantiate the claim but I think there is enough groundwork to infer a connection (Audrey's issues, grandfather's wealth, no one else has been introduced who could be involved) and in the finale, all they need is Marty buying one of Audrey's paintings and seeing the same symbols or having one of the guys they go after confess that he was involved. It doesn't really need to be all that deep or time consuming.

As for Audrey, yea, it's entirely possible that a girl transferred to her school and told her to draw those pictures. Remember, she did claim the reason she drew them was peer pressure.

I guarantee that scene will become a meme with people inserting videos on that screen (like an Adam Sandler film) and showing Woody's revulsion

Do we know Maggie's maiden name?

The "cult" or the group that is associated with these rituals seems to be connected to specific families: Childress, Tuttle, LeDoux...do we know if they're all bayou families? One of the primary things that seemed to jump at me last night, and who isn't watching the show constantly straining to catch even the most minute detail, was that most of the missing children or women came from along a line that ran with the bayou...

Well, that's also where the Wellspring school project was so it makes a bit of sense though Rust did call out that there were more on the bayou and wasn't entirely sure why. Stands to reason all of the families are from there and it seemed Lawnmower Man knew his way around.

As for Maggie's maiden name, not a clue but if it was Childress, Tuttle or Ledoux, Marty would react differently.
