HBO Confirms Filming in Sevilla

Westeros

Recommended Posts

Yesterday, remarks from James Costos—former HBO executive and now US Ambassador to Spain—were taken out of context (note: in Spanish) suggesting that the ambassador was formally announcing that HBO had settled on Spain as a shooting location; in fact, in full the comments merely said what was already widely known, that Spain’s Andalusian region was in the running as a shooting location. The hysteria in the news media in Spain, and social media, led this to transform into some sort of official announcement.

However, this morning HBO has gone ahead and confirmed wide speculation that an actual announcement was imminent. The key point of the press release:

HBO is pleased to confirm that a portion of season five of GAME OF THRONES will be shot on several natural locations in the Province of Sevilla. Specifics on the locations will be announced closer to the time of production.

The rest of the press release can be found below:

Several cast members have said season 5 production starts the 'end' of this month... last week of JUly?

I suppose they are always best prepared in NI , so I suppose Spain won't be production site till later?

In terms of film production it has or had some of the best companies in Europe.

El Deseo owned by the Almodóvar brothers is one of the best.

Plenty of expert production staff there.

I keep wondering if besides Dorne, it will also be used for Braavos and maybe some of Meereen too?

Local authorities have also confirmed to the media that the Alcazar of Sevilla will be used, among other locations not only in the city of Seville but also at another, Osuna. The mayoress of the city has said that among the places 'in consideration' as locations are the bullfighting arena, an area known as "Las Canteras", the "Colegiata" of Osuna and the university area. She also says that she's been in the known of this for a while but couldn't confirm until now.

Some bits: HBO people visited the Alcazar in March as general public. Once the producers had three options, the official contacts began. The mayor of Osuna also says the shooting is expected to start at the beginning of the Fall. The article also states that the bullfighting arena has been chosen 'for a sequence' and that they are also considering to shoot a battle scene in the Almeria desert.

Yay! :cool4:

This is good for my OTHER country, Spain, and also good for its people... Lots of unemployment especially down south. GoT is also very popular in Spain.

It´s confirmed.

The Watergardens:

Cordoba and Granada are Sunspear (La Mezquita Catedral, La Alhambra, El Aljarafe, El Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos...), but logistic has tipped the balance in favor of Seville. A wonderful city, anyway, with wonderful locations.

Couldn't agree more!

Great people and great coffee (Peter Dinklage, take note!)

Argh!!! Of all the places in Spain they could have chosen for filming, they had to pick the one that I hadn't been to when I was still in Europe! :bang:

That said, Sevilla looks like it's going to be a great Dorne. Good choice.

I keep wondering if besides Dorne, it will also be used for Braavos and maybe some of Meereen too?

I remember hearing in one of the DVD commentaries that filming usually starts in Northern Ireland and Iceland (easier to film during the summer when it's not freeze-your-butt-off cold) and then moves on to the warmer regions, while content from the north goes into post-production, so it would make sense that filming has started in Belfast (or is about to start) and Spain will come into play later. I am not sure about Spain being used for Braavos, but Meereen? Definitely. Remember that weather in Braavos is supposed to be all foggy and relatively cool.

I guess all book readers can guess now what the arena is going to be used for - it's perfect. The battle in the Almeria desert makes me hopeful that we may even get a certain TWOW spoilerish battle.

dare i say it's popular in tons of places? in fact, i wonder where it isn't popular. anyway, i only thought of dorne but you're right, it would be good for some mereen scenes as well.

The Alcazar is stunning. Great choice. The Bullring has to be for Daznak's Pit, surely. The Andalusian scenery will be perfectly Dornish though easily adapted to Meereen too. Agree with Seneti - Spain is too hot and arid for Braavos. Bet they use stages for much of that and special effects. I wonder what the Colegiata Osuna will be used for? Sunspear with a bit of dressing up? I wonder if Kings Landing will stay in Croatia. Production teams and budgets are going to be very stretched with Iceland and N.Ireland still in play. They'll already have lots of stock footage from Dubrovnik in the can for KL establishing shots and could use Seville for new exterior work - though Seville isn't on the sea of course.

^ Sibenik will be used for Braavos.

Sibenik looks a great choice. Would likely have to be winter filming if they want some grey skies but there's no reason Braavos has to appear cold I guess, after all, non-book readers won't see anything amiss if it looks sunny and warm. So this clearly means stretching s5 production over 4 key sites if Croatia stays key, although looks like Iceland is scaled down for now. Even so, this is a major logistical exercise. I can't imagine we'll get to see Volantis.

Wow, these locations look amazing. For some reason I imagined Draznak's fighting pit would be scaled down, but the arena looks perfect for a busy scene.

I'm not sure about the Water Gardens. I picture something more airy, open and light when I read, but I suppose it depends on how they dress the set and what they do in post.

Some photos I took in Seville a couple of weeks ago. I spent two weeks there and loved the city, great place. It's not hard to envision parts of it as what I see Dorne looking like in my mind's eye. Andalucia, the area of Spain Seville is located in, is ridiculously beautiful and has a dry arid climate that is spot on if they decide to shoot some landscapes.
