What important thing has Val done in the books that any other Wildling couldn't do?

Nothing. It's just because she's hot and people expect her to be Jon's romantic interest. I agree that there's more about her and Dalla than meets the eye though, she seems very "noble" to be a wildling, but we have to wait and see if she's that important in future books.

A great scene in the books but you have to remember the more compressed nature of a show with only 7 seasons.

We have had the end of the war, with the burning riverlands, in season 4. Now will come a quieter interlude before the next conflict.

Not to mention the 'dumbing it down' aspect of it. They have to make it easier for people as a whole to follow it. Or so it seems.

She found Tormund and she's seen as a "noble wildling" by Stannis & Co, so she can be married off to a Knight or Lord. On the show, the only better known wildling-characters are male.. But Tormund already seems to be at the Wall and might just stay there, so this storyline seems to be wrapped. I still think, she must be somehow important, maybe she'll be introudced when Tormund or whoever talks to the remaining Wildlings behind the Wall to convince them to give up and join the Watch/Stannis. Maybe she won't get as much attention as she gets in the books, but it is still possible to give her a small role.. Don't know.

Another thing, is it common assumption, Charles Dance's statement about being in next season is just about being seen as a corpse, or does it reveal, that we'll finally see flashbacks? I thought, if they'd show flashbacks at all, it would be Bran's visions through the Weirwoodtrees and Tywin's past doesn't seem to be THAT important to show in a flashback, there are far more interesting things that happened. Somebody said, Tyrion might be hunted by killing his father and that's where we'd see Dance in flashbacks.. But wouldn't it be strange if the first flashbacks we'd get were just "unimportant" ones, at least less important ones than those of Bran or Ned in S1 or something?

Val was spontaneously created by the negative energy of those who never liked Ygritte and the fear of those who rather die than accept an eventual Dany/Jon pairing. She has the best of both: he's a blond royal wilding who hasn't fucked up her missions and has not repetitive phrases... It's like if suddenly we're introduced to a character who is a valyrian looking sellsword called Daayne and he's from the day, hates colour blue and effectively can kill little girls.
