(SPOILERS) The Ice Dragons of the North theory

Black Ice

The direwolf sigil of Winterfell is scaled fur. Could it be possible, as wargs, all Starks were traditionally dragon riders? It is known the First Men were not native to Westeros, and Bran the builder had close ties to the Children. What if ice dragons in the north, such as ice dragons from the short story were present and submissive to early Starks? The wall is bound by magic, the step stones were created by magic, magic appeared in Valyria with discovery of dragons. The old kings, buried beneath Winterfell, have swords across their laps to bound the spirits inside. The Valyrian sword, ice, was forged with magic. Ned Stark knew something that he wasn't telling anyone. Besides Jon Snow's parentage of course. He let young children have the most powerful free roaming wild predators know to native Westeros, with no fear that they would be eaten. He seemed more concerned about what Cat might say, but once again no fear for his children's safety. I say he knew that the children would warg into the direwolves, he knew the stories of ice dragons from ages long forgotten, and their ability to control them, and he also knew the reality of the Great Other. He mentions that Lyanna and Brandon had wolf's blood such as Arya. Is it possible that he and Bran have a touch of ice dragon's blood? This is all speculation and probably a crackpot theory altogether, but Bran is told multiple times throughout the series that he will fly. He's already flying through warging crows, but I think Brynden means he will really fly in a more meaningful way. Maybe it has something to do with lady Stark. We don't know Ned's mother, which could be of no importance, but as detail oriented as GRRM is, I think he might be saving that reveal for some reason. We literally know the lineage of every house for no real reason in many cases. A great lord's wife would be mentioned in some way.

Ah, ok.

That completely depends on the artist of the sigil. Never is the direwolf of House Stark described as having scaled fur.. It should be noted, that

in the TV show, the direwolf doesn't have scaled fur either

Neds mother has recently been revealed to have been Lyarra Stark, a cousin of Rickards. So, as GRRM had stated years ago, she was "Lady Stark", as Stark was both her name by birth and her name by marriage.

Also, magic did not arise with the discovery of dragons. The connection between dragons and magic is an unknown one, at the moment. Did the dragon eggs hatch (and thus the dragons return) because the magic was getting stronger? Or was the magic getting stronger because the eggs had hatched? It seems to be the first case, because if it's the last option, then what caused the dragon eggs to hatch in the first place?

Magic does seem to have been getting stronger, as seen by looking at the return of the Others.. But that started before the birth of Dany's dragons.

In addition to all of that, there were dragonlords in Valyria. There have never been any dragonlords mentioned in any other part of the Known World.
