Renly wanted to give the throne to stanis

Recommended Posts

Well at least not a true born hier

Ehm.. that would be most important to him.. as Renly is attracted to men, and not women, he is unlikely to go out and father a bastard on a serving girl or a whore.

Renly, as king, however, would be pressured, until he day he died, to father an heir. Especially the Tyrells would keep goog on about it, as having one of theirs on the throne eventually is what it is all about.

A homosexual man might not be attracted to a woman. He is still capable of impregnating her ;)

I skimmed that chapter, and the closest I could see to Renly naming Stannis heir was offering him Storm's End. It was Stannis that offered to name Renly heir until he had a son of his own.

Anyway, Renly wasn't a wimp like his show counterpart. He knew the importance of having a son to his political position, so even if he was the gayest man alive he would've found a way to get Marg pregnant.

Renly had an okay chance to inherit the throne from Stannis, as Stannis was already in his 30s and had no heir and he and his wive seemed to have trouble having children. Chances are good young Renly and Magaery would have managed an heir, despite their lack of passion. Renly might have also outlived Stannis, if he was not murdered, so nah, for Stannis to wait to inherit the throne wouldn't be a real option

It's safe to say that for the majority of history most gay men married and had children. Even in societies where homosexuality was a lot less taboo or even somewhat accepted like ancient Greece, Rome and China it was still expected that you would marry and have children even if you had male lovers on the side.

I was little unsure of why Renly even wanted the throne so badly. He doesn't seem particularly ambitious, with Stannis as king he'd surely have all he wanted in life - which mainly seems to be parties and comfort. He doesn't think much of Stannis but his ire with him also doesn't seem so vicious as to deny him the throne, does it? Is his ambition to kingship motivated only so Stannis can't be king (and he's not going to side with the Robb or the Lannisters out of loyalty to his house and Robert's memory?)

Perhaps he wanted the Tyrells in power - his queen. He wanted that even when Robert was king. What's his angle with the Tyrells? Is that where his true loyalty lies?
