So turns out only some of the poker gods were with me.

I ended up winning a few hundred at craps, but losing more at blackjack and let-it-ride.  I won a couple hundred at Holdem cash, but then lost it at a tournament I entered. (Lost half my stack when someone went all-in pre flop with KJ while I had KQ. They rivered a J. Lost the rest when I called a KQ with an AK on the flop. We'd both flopped the king but they turned two pair. So I ended up going out at 25 when 12th paid.)

Down a couple hundred overall, but if the Thunder beat the Warriors tonight I'm back to even. If not....well at least it's been a fun trip.

Edit: we're up 25 at the half with 3 points in our favor. Thunder do not get lazy.

Blah. Went to play Holdem for the first time in months a few days ago and left on a pretty bad loss. Sat down with $160 and over the course of 5 hours built myself up to $310.

I was big blind for $3 and dealt A3 off suit. Someone made it $8 pre flop and including me there were 5 people in the hand, putting the pot at $41 (small blind didn't call). Flop came 3-3-8, with two cards being spades. I was first to act and, being worried about the flush draw, went ahead and bet $30. I got two callers bringing the pot up to $131. The turn was a 5 of hearts. With that much in the pot I went ahead and bet $100. I got one caller all-in for $92, bringing the pot to $315. The guy called me with KQ spades hoping for the flush. And yep, he hit it on the river.

That brought me back down to $180 so I left. Wasn't a loss, but would've been a helluvalot better if that moron hadn't gotten lucky.

Yeah I played a couple weeks ago for the first time in a long time. defining hand was A-10 suited, $10 pre flop, like 5 people in the hand, I pair the A and go all in for about $70 (pot was around $50) after 3 people checked around, get two callers. Guy rivers 5 high straight to win it. That's life!

Lol. I know for most games they are (i.e. blackjack, let-it-ride, craps), but that is why I usually stick with Texas Hold'em. That way I am playing other people, and not the house. I also keep track of my wins/losses for the year, that way I make sure I don't lose too much (for 2014 I ended the year up $344 :cool4: )

Does the House take a seemingly small percentage of each pot? Many years ago,  I recall reading somewhere (Scarne on Cards, maybe?) that at the poker table, the house would do this as their way of making money off the game. The percentage was small but enough to skew things so that, like every other gaming table in the casino, "the House always wins" if you play long enough.

Yea. At US Casinos, it's normally 10% of the pot with a max of $4-5. It's beatable by good players. That's for some of the smaller games. For the bigger games, it's normally a timed fee where you pay ~$6 every half an hour. House always win with poker.

Same at every casino I have been to, if it is a pot rake then it helps people who are not winning, usually capped at $5 or $7. So if you aren't winning, you aren't paying the house. The other way you have to pay around $6 per hour no matter what.

No matter how you look at it, it's still best odds around because you are playing against the players and not the house. You are basically just paying the house for the privilege of using their tables.

Good night so far. Started off winning $305 at Holdem(most of it when I flopped trips with pocket 9s and someone called me all-in with an open ended straight draw). Then I took $200 of that to a craps table and ended up cashing out $450 after an hour.

Edit: And I would like to add that the $250 I won at craps was after I got screwed out of $7 when I was only paid $21 on a win instead of $28.

Ouch. Tough loss today. Played for an hour not winning or losing much until I hit pocket aces under the gun. I called the $3 blind and the player after me went ahead and made it $6. 6 people called him putting the pot at $45. I went ahead and raised it to $40. I got three callers putting the pot around $200. The flop came A-3-5. I went ahead and pushed my last $60 and was called by one person with pocket 2s. The turn was a 4

Helluva night last night. Got big early when I went all in for $85 with pocket Qs and got four callers. I turned a 3rd queen and took the main pot.  About an hour later, when I was about to leave, someone hit the mini bad beat. It payed $400 to everyone just sitting at the table. That put me up $1050 for the day, so I called it quits.

So it was my birthday two Wednesdays ago.  Got a hotel room at Mohegan Sun.  Bought in for 200 at 1-2 and played for a few hours breaking basically even.  Then my favorite dealer came into the box and wished me Happy Birthday.  She only knew it was my birthday because we're dating, but as soon as she said that, I started saying during my pre flop action, "It's my birthday" and was up about $500 during her down.  Then for the next couple of hours, any time I said that, I pretty much nailed it.  Started drinking with another friend, and got pretty wasted. Because it was my birthday. So after cashing out about $1k up, figured I'd drunken short stack the 2-5 game.  Ran $200 up to $2300 and went to bed around 5:30.  Ran pretty good the rest of the weekend too.  Was in a hideous downswing, but that seems to have passed...

Even though I ran like crap the following weekend, I can't complain.  Another few sessions like those, and I'm def going to worldcon!

Very nice. Any trip where you make enough to pay for the hotel room plus expenses is awesome.

I haven't played for a couple months myself because of a massive beating I suffered back in March (I turned the nut flush and the other player rivered a boat) But I went this morning though and played 1-3 for two hours and was able to cash out $170 up. Not amazing, but hey it's a win.

I played the last few weekends and have some bad runs. One tournament I lost five big hands on the river, including getting aces cracked by the case king. Back to back hands aces got cracked, someone elses then mine.

Played cash and increased my buy in by 50% which is good enough for me.

Played again today. Was over $175 up at one point, then took a couple of losses. Ended up cashing out $110 up for the day. Won most of it in one hand when pocket Aces held up for me. The board paired 6s on the turn, and I hit a 3rd Ace on the river.

Ha. Better watch out for his calls.

I played yesterday for about 4 hours and ended up cashing out $16 down. Considering I was down $460 at one point, I was pretty relieved at that result.

Edit: Finally on a winning streak. Hit $330 on Saturday and $215 on Monday. Then today I won another $340. Think I'm going to take a break for a little while.

Sigh... Anyone else ever raise $30 pre-flop with QQ and get re-raised to $180 and think to yourself, "Shit, I know for a fact this guy has either KK or AA." but you call anyways because you're not good enough of a player to fold QQ to a raise pre-flop?

In this instance the other guy had KK of spades and clubs. The flop gave me false hope when three hearts came out (one of my queens was a heart) but then the turn was a diamond and the river a club.

Well I had a shit Friday of cards. I had been running good for a while, made a change and saw my game pick back up, positive $ for the year, which exceeds my expectations because I am a middling player at best. So I played a $50 tourney, 30 people or so and it was a train wreck. From the opening hand I could feel it was going to be bad, sure enough I was out within one hour.

I still had the bug so i went to the cash table, bought in for a hundred. only 8 handed, then within one rotation two people left. So finally there are 5 of us playing and I play AQ to a $10 bet. Flop is Q 9 3. Original bettor leads out at $25, someone else folds. So the pot has around $40 plus his $25 bet, I have $80+/- back, move all in. The better thinks on it a while and calls with A9, and of course hits a one outter on the river. I just laughed and went home, knew it was a bad night and never should have sat at cash!

That's actually a pretty decent tournament. Wish I had it's like here. $50 dollar buy-in with 30+ people? What did 1st pay? About $700- $800? There aren't any good tournaments at the casino I play at. Buy-ins are usually at least $125 with only 20 or so people participating.

And sorry, but wouldn't that be a two outter? Perhaps we use the term differently. Unless you already knew the last 9 was accounted for.

Edit: One or two outter, either way that was still horribly unlucky. However, at the time you made the move you had him dominated. Except for already having the nuts, that's the best you can hope for in this game. And in the long run you should win more often than not in that situation.
