Ranking the Free Cities in population

Recommended Posts

Braavos is either first or second (as is Volantis). Both city-states are far more powerful than the others, although they're polar opposites. I'd place the population of each city at c1m, with millions more living in their hinterlands.

Are we counting only the cities proper? Or are we including their possessions?

Nope we are including the cities possesions.

Is Lorath the only one that has a colony outside the city?

Volantis actually has three towns outside there city and each one of the towns is apparently the size of Kingslanding.

1. Volantis ( + Volon Therys, Selhorys, etc.)

2. Braavos

3. Myr

4. Pentos

5. Lys

6. Tyrosh

7. Norvos

8. Qohor

9. Lorath

The first two are quite clear (volantis & braavos) and the smallest also (lorath) the middle section is difficult to estimate.

I think the three "towns" around Volantis are actually the size of Westerosi cities like Lannisport, Gulltown or White Harbor, not the size of King's Landing. If those were the size of KL, Tyrion would say it explicitly.

King's Landing has around 500,000 inhabitants, while White Harbor is only 50,000. Tyrion says that the Volantene "towns" would be called cities in Westeros, which means they are somewhere in between 50,000 and 500,000 inhabitants.

Volantis controls a lot of smaller towns like Selhorys, Volon Therys, Valysar and many other smaller villages

we need to keep in min every city controls an amount of territory around them, containing other towns and villages.

Some of these towns are bigger than Oldtown or Lannisport, maybe a few are more populous than King's Landing.

TWOIAF says these "towns" are all more populous and bigger than King's Landing or Oldtown.

(not to mention some of them were cities that were directly controlled by Valyrian noblemen or women like Valyria or Oros.)
