Deadpool v SkullpoopL: Dawn of Spoilers

Bastard of Boston

Yeah, I'll also partake in this Deadpool love-in :) The film was great. Even in places where I knew what joke they were doing because I watched way to many trailers for this (mental note to self: don't do that next time), I still laughed. I'm so relieved that the comedy lived up to the trailers. That was what I wanted to see and it was just great (unlike say GoTG where the comedy was pretty mediocre).

The whole theatre seemed to be game for this. There was a pretty big crowd, which surprised me. The whole theatre was ringing with laughter quite a few times. I'm glad Ryan Reynolds finally got a good superhero film (he's had to endure parts in some rough comic book films before). I was also pleasantly surprised by Ed Skrein. His Daario was atrocious, but he was perfectly fine in this film. Not amazing, but certainly fitting for this type of role.

I'll be tuning in for the sequel, especially if they cast EDIT: just to clarify, the spoiler contains a joke from the film, so I wouldn't click on it if you haven't seen the film yet.

Spoiler

Keira Knightley as Cable

:P

Just when I think that I am going to agree with you finally in one of your posts, you have to do something like this. Chris Pratt is comic gold, and GoTG was outstanding on a comic level. There was nothing at all mediocre about that movie.

Deadpool is very funny as well, but having far more content on the table because of the R rating gave it an easier road. When you get to make dick jokes and anal sex innuendos, you just don't have to be as creative to get a laugh. (Although the humor in Deadpool was creative as well as crude to be fair.)

It's not my fault, I'm not to blame :P

Aside from the comedy, the villain, the Gamorra/nebula plot, the Josh Brolin cameo, the climactic action sequence (although, now that I think about it, you're right. A lot of those elements weren't just mediocre, they were bad). GoTG's humour peaked in the trailers. Shame really. I did quite like Pratt, his performance is one of the elements that pulls the movie up from the dirt.

I don't think Rated R comedies are necessarily easier to make. There is a lot of crap (e.g. the later American Pie films) there too. You might even go the opposite route and state that most writers don't put much effort in their work if they can rely on fart/dick/pegging jokes.

While you do have a point that some writers take the cheap and easy way out in R rated comedies, and Deadpool certainly didn't do this for the majority of its gags, you once again lose me when you talk about GoTG being "bad". The end of that movie featured one of the most hilarious sequences ever to be put in a comic book movie.

How dare you talk bad about the lead singer of Mouse Rat !!!!

Howard the Duck isn't really my cup of tea when it comes to comedy, but if you thought that was great than I'm glad for you I guess :P

No, he was one of the good things about GotG. Didn't I say that "  I did quite like Pratt, his performance is one of the elements that pulls the movie up from the dirt. " ;)

Howard the Duck wasn't in the end (or finale) of the movie... He was in the epilogue (or post credit.)

Also, the entire cast of GoTG was spot on incredible in the thing. Especially Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesal, and Dave Bautista.Everyone was extremely likable and funny in the film.

I actually rate Deadpool as the second best comic book movie of the last two years behind only Guardians. It has taken over the number two spot from Ant Man for me.

I just came from seeing the movie, only to find another classic Veltigar vs Howdyphillip (this needs to be a thread title for something)

But Deadpool was freaking great. 15/10 on the entertainment scale. I mean, the humor barely slowed down, it was hard to hear some of the dialogue because of the laughter in the theater. I have never laughed so much in the theater before.

And I loved how nonchalantly they tied their X-Men verse with the Marvel's Avengers verse. And all the other little references. I would love to see a reaction from Hugh Jackman to this.

Oh, and the award for best intro sequence for a movie goes to Deadpool. I'm look forward to seeing it many more times.

Quite a few kids in the theater, with parental escort, of course. When I left the theater I nearly burst out laughing when I heard a dad ask his kids "Now I know you had to cover your eyes a lot, but what did you think?" :lmao:

Loved this. God there were so many ways this could have gone downhill, but it didn't. This clearly is a labor of love. It managed to bring Deadpool, a character that began as a cheap Deathstroke knock-off before taking a life of his own, on the big screen, successfully subverted superhero genre conventions,  and managed good adult humor. Trust me, that's way harder than it sounds. Ryan shines through and I hope this proves to be the career rebounce he needs (even if it means Deadpool  movies for life). In this day and age of oversaturation of superheroes, Deadpool was what was needed.

Also my casting nomination for you know who : Stephen Lang

Yeah, it delivered. I was laughing the whole time and loved how the movie made fun of Reynolds and itself throughout. Deadpool spelling out a certain character's name in a particular way at the end was awesome.

Spoiler

Was that supposed to be the Avengers helicarrier at the end?

Mouserat is the past, it's FiveSkin now.

Movie was fucking gold, I almost peed myself during the first Colossus encounter and it maintained such excellence throughout. The exposition could have sunk this film, but I actually think that's where it established its dominance never to look back. Going from gut-busting laughter to a freaky Saw Torture Porn without missing a beat is one of the most impressive things I've ever seen.

We should organize a competition! And there needs to be a bikini contest. I'm totally winning that one :P

That should be a blu-ray extra or something, because it would be great.

Spoiler

Deadpool's second mask was so great, one of the best moments in the entire film

:agree:It was clearly a passion project for everyone involved, from Ryan Reynolds to Tim Miller even to Ed Skrein, everyone really wanted to be there, it was more than just a paycheck for these people. I wish more films were like that.

EDIT: Also really surprised this was the director's first gig directing a feature length film. Very impressive.

Probably in my top 5 comic movies.

I'd say that was one of Stan Lee's best cameos ever. From the top of my mind, only Age of Ultron had a better cameo.

I think that was what they were implying, but it seems strange that they would go this far with the nods no?

In a film filled with great moments, that was probably my favourite scene.

Spoiler

the way Deadpool broke his hand on Colossus' crotch and the way Ryan Reynolds pronounced"Your poor wife" was so incredible. I swear I almost died laughing.

Personally, I would need to see Deadpool again, but it might even sneak into my top three of superhero films. I feel like The Dark Knight and Unbreakable are almost impossible to oust from their positions, but Avengers and Cap 2 are certainly beatable for that third spot.

I really enjoyed it. I will say however that it took a good 20 minutes for me to feel comfortable with the movie. I'm maybe a little older than the target audience, in that I'm not a teenage boy, and my initial reaction to Deadpools witty retorts was 'yeah a teenage kid is going to find that amusing, but me, I think its not that clever or witty..'.

But once they went into flashback mode and fleshed out his backstory and him as a person, I was able to accept the tone of movie.

Yes it did creep into a teenage boys wet dream of a movie one too many times, but thats the audience its aimed at, I can't blame it for that.

I was worried about the teenage pandering. Might go see it today.

And what are the odds those would also turn out to be your top 2 ? In my case, it's the original Iron Man and Cap 2 that are tied for third place.

look, I'm not pretending that there is some deeper hidden meaning here you're not getting, but to just dismiss Deadpool as juvenile is directly against all that this movie set out to achieve and did achieve. Deadpool embraced this inherent...'tackiness' let's call it that, and used that to it's advantage. Further, there are some really smart critiques of superhero genre there.

I don't think this was aimed so heavily at the teenage boy as you're suggesting. I'm not a teenage boy, I went and saw the film with 5 other people who are not teenage boys, and I actually saw mostly adults and the occasional bad parent with their small child. In fact, the demographic breakdown I saw of this film was primarily 20+ 55% male and 45% female.
