The Books That Have Just Come Out: New Release Thread

That is, unfortunately, the magic of university press pricing.  It's a desperate attempt to recoup some fraction of the cost of production (which is in the editorial phase, not so much in the printing etc.) by selling it to academic libraries, but it's a total death spiral because their budgets have been cut across the board and I'll stop now before I get into a whole rant about how broken the system really is.

Today is an epic fantasy bonanza! :) I'm gonna start with The Witchwood Crown.

The Witchwood Crown by Tad Williams (US pub.)
The Legion of Flame by Anthony Ryan
The Bones of the Earth by Rachel Dunne
The Court of Broken Knives by Anna Smith Spark (US pub.)
Soul of the World by David Mealing (US pub.)

Nice.It was already on my TBR list but i will bump it up now.

Do note that I wasn't quite sure at the start coz there are bits where the writing is quite finicky-bordering-on-gimmicky, but once she finds her groove that's no worry anymore.

The character work is excellent.

Books from August on my TBR pile:

Son of the Night by Mark Alder

I question whether that actually comes out this month. I see the paperback is scheduled for 2018 and there is no other physical edition listed, no hardcover.

I've been getting a lot of social media ads about "Blackwing" . Claims of best fantasy of the year, Abercrombie-beater etc. Has anyone hear read it yet? Just curious as to whether it's genuinely good or if Gollancz has an effective and targeted marketing campaign?

Never heard of it, but as a rule I distrust all book ads on social media.

True, although Gollancz is fairly respectable (and I do follow their page which probably explains the ad). But usually Wert or Ser Patrek review things with so much buzz about it.

there's a review here, and here's an outline and lots of quotes.

I didn't know Pat still did reviews, but yeah at least its not some self published thing amazon pulled up. I got stories!

And of course its not out in the US til October, so its probably good,.

You're probably right on all counts.

Might see if there's a signed copy in a forbidden planet and give it a whirl. Advertising for the win.
