Dornish Disappointment

Recommended Posts

My theory is that Doran was getting extremely bored watching the children at play so he allowed for Jaime and Bronn to attempt their foolhardy plan unhindered, leaving the backdoor open for the Sand Bunnies, just to watch the hilarious scene unfold from his comfy chair on the balcony above. Surprise, Areo arrives just in time to send everyone off to bed. It sure beats chasing all the fools around Dorne, and has it's own entertainment value. Betcha! He's gonna release them all, just to watch them do it again. He's a real joker, that Prince Doran.

:lmao:

In that ^ way, the storyline would probably make more sense than it does now (which is none at all)...

I was praying so much Areo would just chop some Sand heads off with his damn axe, but no - nothing.

Talking about huge guys with hugeass axes, the show likes to give characters lines of actually other characters, doesn't it (like LF telling the Hound's story, aso.)?

I wouldn't have mind Areo to get some Vic dialogue, like, Obara: "I AM OBARA SAND! BLABLABLA... who are you?*", Areo: "Your death" *goes full Vic on Obara*

That would have at least been enjoyable and satisfying...

(*Because, y'know, characters in Porne always have to introduce themself to the audience people they likely know since many, many years.)

I swear if somebody like Stannis and/or Shireen dies this season, while these bratty clown Snakes and their darkstar'd mother are still alive and in the next seasons, then... then... I don't even can describe what then...

I am far far more than a bit underwhelmed lol They have made a debacle of this whole season...Not just Dorne. The whole thing feels like watching a soap opera instead of what we used to have. Even last year it had an entirely different feel to it. It is all cheesy and awkward. I actually felt embarrassed this past week with the fight between jaime/bronn and the sand snakes. I wouldn't complain about just making changes to the show but the changes they have made don't even make good sense! And what is the deal with Jorah... Making such a big deal about the stone men touching Tyrion, then he goes and all but hugs him when they go to try to hide from the slavers. But I am not mad, i am just disappointed lol :bang:

This is what happens when you remove the most important character (Arianne) from the Dorne plot and keep the least important (the Sand Snakes) and then don't bother to give them any more character depth even though you've largely increased their presence.

What boggles my mind was just how mediocre that fight was. I mean, they've given us nothing but bro trip chuckles and melodrama all season, at least they could do was give us an epic fight, but it just fell so flat. I've seen high school plays with better fight choreography. I mean, I know it's a tight shooting schedule, but damn. You can't tell me that the director looked at the final cut of that sequence and said "Brilliant, just how I pictured it." and if he did then he needs to be fired right now.

:agree: I have said from the get go that without Arianne they should have left Dorne alone.

I don't know how much Arianne would have improved Dorne, but clearly, having 3 sand snakes, the show hasn't been able to give them any personalities they are three cartoonish warrior women and that is jarring for a show that tries to stay away from camp.

There isn't much story there and what story there is doesn't make much sense. They want revenge and want to kill Mrycella, okay, that's sort of stupid, but let's roll with it. Jamie's mission is unbelievably stupid. One sellsword and a guy who can't fight?

Everyone arriving at the same time was bad for even a B movie.

And what happened to Myrcella's kingsguard? Yes, I know this is a detail that 90% of viewers don't remember, but the SHOW should remember. The show should not forget/blow off that she sailed to Dorne with a kingsguard, he should still be there.

Perhaps that would even have made a better plot. Jamie and Bronn make contact with the kingsguard, who lets them in....

The whole thing is a total mess of stupidity, lack of characterization, bad acting, and bad dialogue.

And as I have complained on the rant and rave threads, what in the hell happened to Indira Varma's long hair from last year? Again, this is something the show should pay attention to. Why did she have long hair last year and now it's short? If there is some meaning to it, let the audience know, otherwise it just appears as a lame continuity error.

Maybe they thought they would mix a little of the Farseer Trilogy into the mix and have her cut her hair in mourning LOL :dunno:

I was disappointed even before the season was released, to know Arianne was cut and that we will have no Quentyn going to Meereen as well (it would be really nice to see him in Volantis and going with the Windblown to Slaver's Bay and all his story, even that it's a short one, it would add a lot of emotion to the show and his death would be a true shock, something that exists in the books, after all, hist death happened.

They merged everybody the three siblings in Trystane. Ellaria became someone completely oposite of what she is in the books, as she is against the war, she was merged with Darkstar as far as I can see. I think the only two characters that are saving show Dorne is Doran and Areo, both actors are being brilliant, even that Hotah doesn't look like his book counterpart, he is a good actor, at least in that role.

But with all the bad stuff they are doing in Dorne, I really wished they had made the Iron Islands, I wanted Victarion, Euron, even Aeron. I wanted a true Asha, not that meek Yara they made, Asha is a badass and an imporant character, not a recurring character.

The fact that their location on the map in the credits is generic city (is that meant to be Sunspear, or the Water Gardens?!) of "Dorne" kind of says it all.

It's laughably bad. Three of the greatest fighters in Dorne, supposedly, against a sellsword and a guy without a sword hand?! Both of them trying to kidnap Myrcella in broad daylight, in the middle of a giant courtyard in plain sight of the Prince of Dorne? Yeah, brilliant plan. Ellaria Sand just... nope, I can't.

Not to mention Myrcella Lollys Lannister... "oh no my fiancé kissed other girls before he knew I existed, what if they were prettier than me? wahwahwahwah...." Myrcella is a character I really like in the books. oh well, RIP Myrcella along with Dolorous Edd, Ellaria, Aegon, Barristan, Missandei, Mance, Myranda Royce...

Glad somebody else pointed out the map mistake. It seems like in order to "not confuse the audience with adding too much too quick" the writers themselves have become confused.

The show forgot this a while ago. In ep4, Tommen has 5 KG with him. Trant is gone to Braavos and Jaime is off to Dorne. Whoever went with Mycella was clearly forgotten by D&D/Writing Staff.

The Dorne storyline has been a bit of a guilty pleasure for me, well at least in some respects. Yes it's cheesy, implausible, the acting has more ham than the boar that killed Robert. But at the same time the rest of the storylines have been just as dreadful and also terribly dull. At least watching Bron and Jamie wearing my mother's living room drapes pretending to swordfight three little girls was funny! The fake Spanish accents, the ludicrous speeches vowing revenge, the total departure from realism into an almost magical realist fantasy, it's some of D&D's finest work IMHO. Comedy gold.

Moorish architecture used for Dorne is delight i can see why Doran doesn't want to leave his palace.

I could be wrong, but I think part of the reason why Dorne sucks is because of the gardens. I seem to remember than in those "a day in the life" videos, they mentioned that they only had a relatively short period of time to shoot in the gardens, so that explains why the whole thing looks horribly rushed.

Also, yeah, the gardens are nice and all, but why did they decide to make that the only place in Dorne? That's why they had to shoot that lousy Obara monologue in a freaking beach in Northern Ireland.

The whole Dornish plotline feels like it's been outsourced to some telenovela production company. If it hadn't Jaime, Bronn and Siddig in it, I would have thought that I am watching some lame GoT parody. Indira Varma was mighty fine last season but her accent and delivery of these ridiculous line is terrible this year and she is nearly as annoying as Obara.

The oldest Sand Snake is the only one who looks the part and whom I can believe have some martial abilities but it's outweighed by the horrendous acting and cheesy lines. The younger one are complete nonentities. They look like contemporary high-schoolers and are clearly very uncomfortable in the costumes and particularly with their weapons. They don't even look natural just holding them in non-combat scenes.

I hope that there will be some payoff to the scenes and that Jaime will be able to show his diplomatic abilities like he did during the Riverun siege.

I've found the audition transcript for a scene which might be in the next episode, if anyone is interested.

Warning majorly spoilery re. Bronn's fate

Tyene: He has a good voice.

Obara: He's a singer, if he was a fighter we might've been in trouble.

Bronn: It's against my code to hurt women.

Obara: It's amazing how many men we beat seem to have this code.

Bronn: I wouldn't say you beat me.

Tyene: And how is your arm?

Bronn: Wonderful. Wouldn't feel right to leave Dorne without a new scar.

Obara: You think you're leaving Dorne?

Bronn: No great hurry. Dornish women are the most beautiful in the world.

Tyene: Thank you.

Bronn: I said Dornish women, I didn't say you.

Tyene: I'm not the most beautiful woman you have ever seen?

Bronn: I've seen quite a few women in all the Seven Kingdoms.

Tyene: Tell me one woman more beautiful than I am.

Bronn: Well, now in King's Landing there was an absolute...

Tyene: There was a what? In King's Landing you were saying...

Bronn: Was I?

Tyene: ...there is a woman more beautiful than I am.

Bronn: Was there? My memory's not what it was earlier.

Tyene: And how is your arm now.

Bronn: You seem concerned with it. You must really like me.

Tyene: And how is your head?

Bronn: My head? You don't even want to know what's going on in there.

Tyene: What was that, are you sure you're feeling alright?

Bronn: Sure, a bit woozy but that's to be expected after a good dust-up.

Tyene: Your nose is bleeding.

Bronn: It's not it's the dry air.

Tyene: My dagger was coated with a special ointment from Asshai. It's called the Long Farewell. It can take some time to work some times several days. But if one single drop makes contact with the skin...death.

Tyene: The only antidote. Who is the most beautiful woman in the world? Who? Who, sorry?

Bronn: You.

She takes whatever the antidote it is from or off of her necklace and gives it to him.

Tyene: Don't drop it. I think you're very handsome as well.

She blows him a kiss and laughs.

Things are looking up I'd say.

That scene could be an improvement, although, I can't imagine the actress to deliver the speech convincingly but I am quite happy to be proven wrong.

I hope they dont cut it at half like Obara´s audition. These characters desperately need some dialoque and characterization. mainly Tyene and Nym, but even Obara need to do something else then monoloques. Seriously what they were thinking to "introduce" them like this.

I lost a lot of confidence in the writers and i am dreading anything what could be called a mission. All of them were horrible (Jaime/Bronn in Dorne, Yara in Dreadfort, Jon in Caster Keep). It would be wise to adjust an expectation for Hardhome.

They're sitting on a bench in the Riverlands with Balon's leech, the Blackfish, and other continuity lapses..

Bronn should have been able to kill at least one of the Sand Snakes during that fight scene. They've spent 5 seasons building him up to be this badass killer swordsman who fears nothing, but he was evenly matched but two girls with a whip and a pair of daggers? Makes no sense at all. He's physically stronger than them and he has a longer reach than either of them - add a longsword to that reach and both Sand Snakes he fought realistically could have been dead in seconds.

And Jamie should have been bested by the other Sand Snake he was fighting. He has one hand, his left hand! He hasn't been training with it long at all. He only beat the Dornishman in the episode previously because of dumb luck with his golden hand catching the sword, but you're telling me he could evenly match Oberyn's daughter? She should have knocked him into the dust.

Someone should have died in that scene - the only reason no one did is because everyone loves Bronn and Jamie.. and Oberyn, so you can't kill his daughters! They could have played that scene a million different ways and it would have been better. It was terribly written and the acting wasn't so hot either.
