AGoT Re-read Timeline

The Adequate Jon

Recommended Posts

Originally, we tried to keep them down to 15 mi/day, but that just doesn't give them enough time to finish the book before Joffrey's next nameday. They ended up going 25 mi/day. We just have to pretend that people and horses walk faster in ASOIAF.

I've been shadowing this thread for a little bit, and here's my theory.

If you think about it, there are some good days to travel and some not so good days to travel... I think that the average mi/day could vary. If it's really nice weather outside, people can walk longer and even faster. On the other hand in really bad weather people can only go so far, and this is where you're gonna see the breakdowns. Mud and snow also play a big factor in how fast they move. I do think that 25 mi/day is a decent average for the miles traveled.

I just realized that Dany only has nine months before the end of the book to have her baby. I've adjusted Dany timeline to make this possible. The only problem that this causes is that news of her wedding now takes 5 months to reach Ned and Robert. This isn't too big of a deal because we really don't know how far that news would have to travel, and that news would take a long time because it would not be carried by raven. If we need to, we can adjust her timeline further by saying she gave birth earlier than the full nine months.

Thanks for doing this. I have just started merging your timeline with my own endeavours.

Have you solved the Dany problem? In your current timeline, the wedding is in the 2nd half of July 298. We know that she didn't get pregnant immediately (she is "schooled in the arts of love" first by one of her handmaids). But even if we assume pregnancy on the wedding night that puts her only in the 8th month of her pregnancy in your timeline, maybe early 9th. Is that deliberate?

I've updated the dates in the timelines, so that Joffrey's wedding will occur on 1/1/300.

When do you have the Kings Landing riots? (Myrcella leaves for Dorne, Tyrion Stokeworth is conceived.) I have that at 1 Jul 299.

I had that on 14 July 299, although there is some wiggle room.

I can live with the 14th. Is your list in some format you'd like to share?

Having finally discovered the wonderful timeline widget I've started converting my data to XML. So some editing is imminent anyway, and I'd like to see you stuff for the last half of 299 and for 300.

I have it in an Excel spreadsheet. I've only gotten halfway though ASOS because the timeline isn't a very high priority for me right now. However, I did add your AFFC timeline to the bottom of the spreadsheet. You can download it here. (This link will only be active temporarily because I really shouldn't be using the website like this.)

About the Dany timeline, we know she is 9 month younger than Jon, and we have Jon's fifteenth birthday, roughly, happening one week or two before Jon III. Her wedding takes place when Dany is 13. Since you placed Jon III on december 9, that makes Dany's 15th birthday happen late July/early august 299, and subsequently, her bethrotal aroung July/august 297, way before may 298.

Also, she reaches 14 in Dany III, on the other side of the Dothraki sea, near Vaes Dothrak, so around August/July 298, that's when she notices she is pregnant. To stretch things a maximum, I considered her handmaids noticed the "soft swell of her belly" after 45 days or so, and that's really early though possible given Dany slender frame, and that makes Dany 10 happen some 7 months and a half after Dany III, around March 15, at max.

The 4 months between the handmaids noticing Dany's pregnancy and Varys knowing, in Arya 3, would be because any spy would have to notice, then arrive in Vaes Dothrak, dispatch a message via a caravan to pentos, then Illyrio would have to arrange his affairs, and jump on a galley to KL. News of Robert wanting Dany's head arrived the same way (though faster, I assume a caravan was already on the way and Illyrio sent a bird to Qohor.

I didn't do any timeline for ASOS, but considering he turns 8 in AGOT in november 298 and that we last saw him, roughly, around january 300, when Sam led him to Coldhands, then I guess he was 9 and some months.

Yes, in Dany 1, she meets Drogo, and we are told that this day is her thirteen birthday, then in Dany 3, where we get all the traveling from Pentos to Vaes Dothrak, she turns fourteen when her handmaids tell her she is pregnant. It's explicitly said, no room for misinterpretation.

What can be shifted is how much time passed until the handmaids noticed her pregnancy, I assumed it was something like 1 month and a half, as it suited my timeline to stretch her subsequent stay in Vaes Dothrak, but it could be theoretically possible to have the maids notice only during the third month or more. (though, the vomiting takes place after Dany 3, so 3 month is maybe stretching things a bit)

ETA: the only thing I have trouble in AGOT is to match Tyrion with Catelyn at the crossroads inn. I ended assuming it was an author's oversight, since no matter what, Tyrion rides south way too fast, and Catelyn has to stay in KL, take her sweet time up the road and lie to Marillion to stretch things enough.

Sorry, am I missing something? In my read of the chapter I see that she is thirteen, but not that her thirteenth nameday takes place in it. She is given gifts, but I take them to be given to her on the occasion of her meeting with Khal Drogo, not as birthday presents. Perhaps I missed it, could you point it out?

This may not be the right forum but since people are working so assiduously on dates- does anyone know how old Bran would be when last we saw him?

We know Bran is nine years old when we last saw him. In ACoK he thinks of his ninth name day having "finally come and gone" on page 326 (US Hardback.) This is when the news of the Robb's victory at Oxcross, and Ser Stevron Frey's death reach Winterfell. We know this is in year 299, because it falls between two known dates of that year - Joffrey's 13th name day at the start of ACoK and Joffery's Wedding (when he is still 13) in ASoS on New Year's day 300. Which, of course, also tells us Bran was born in the Year 290.

We also know Bran has not turned 10 by the time we last see him in the Nightfort. We know this because of two separate facts - Tommen's age in AFfC and the election of Jon Snow as the Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. Cersei reports Jon's election, something that takes place after Sam leaves Bran with Coldhands, to her small council in AFfC page 248 (UK Hardback) and we find that Tommen is still eight much later in that story line (AFfC 350). Because Tommen's name day falls before Bran's, but he is born in the year following Bran's - or Year 291, his ninth name day must come before Bran turns 10 (this is why they are both the same age of seven when Robert's party comes to Winterfell.) Because this hasn't happened by the time the news of Jon's election reaches King's Landing, we know that the earlier event of Bran's escape beyond the Wall is before Bran turns 10.

Hope this is helpful.

Can't before the week end, I don't have any copy by me. I'll check my notes.

Ok, got my notes and my books, and I was totally mistaken on the thirteen birthday taking place during Dany 1. She is indeed thirteen then, but it not said that this day is her nameday. My only excuse is that I noted "Dany is 13" in my notes and read that as "Dany turns 13".

Doesn't really changes anything in my timeline, on a quick review, except I will put Dany's Wedding closer to Ned 2, around march 298, though.
