Well done Stephen Dillane

He is a really great actor. To shine in a show with such a big cast (and many talented actors) is a great feat and although I so do not agree with show Stannis on his decisions (I don't agree with book Stannis too, most of the time), Stephen DIllane did a brillant job in portraying him. After Michelle Farley and of course the great Charles Dance, Dillane will probably be the actor, I will miss most on the show. I'Ll have to watch out for his future work

And totally off topic: It's really great, that this board gives every actor a proper goodbye after character death - they all did amazing jobs

Yah he completely 100% nailed it, Stannis was always one of the most intriguing characters in the books to me and Dillane just took him out of the page and gave so much life and character to the lifeless characterless SOB Mannis lol.

Dillane would sometimes mess up (notice the strange smirks in the first 2 episodes of this season) but dude...... when gods (d&d sadly cause they control everything on the show; they butchered him beyond belief) go against you and you somehow manage to fight back (his look at the charge of the Bolton cavalry was utterly mannis-like)... Respect earned.

I have always sympathized with Stannis (not part of the Mannis fan club though) and dillane was probably a huge part of that.

Someone should transcribe his voice onto the "I shall bring justice to Westeros" speech. I would pay to hear that. Or better yet, ask him to attend comic con this year and give it there in person.

On a more angry note, how can d&d do this to him?

Satannis stats or with the advantage and loses it through his own stupidity and some story of poetic justice crap d&d dreamed up.

Stannis starts out with a massive disadvantage and slowly builds up loyalty with the northern lords through hard earned victories and astute politicking. He is almost dead certain to win the Battle of Ice and reclaim the north in the Stark name.

How is this fair? They took one of the most anticipated moments of the series and.... I'm just lost for words.

This is not to mention the other catastrophic "artistic" decisions that have been taken this season.

I really liked his potrayal of Stannis Baratheon , and personaly even if writers demonized character in this show i found simpathy for him, mostly due brilliant acting in scenes with Shireen, Davos and Blackwater.

Show has lost great actor and character.

This, so much this

Through their inherent dislike of the character they deprived us (and themselves, coincidentally) of some of the most epic and glorious moments in the book.

For instance, pretty much everyone was in unison that season 3 and season 4 (until the very end) were some truly weak, dreadful Stannis plot-lines. They were boring, there was way too much of Stannis being led about by Mel on everything (bookStannis is downright hostile to Mel, he's only listening to her because at this point its her way or....nothing, not until Davos makes him realize the true danger. Remember: BookStannis made the decision to go to the wall, he didn't outsource that to Mel, he also didn't let Mel decide Davos's fate. He remained true to his friend and loyalest councilor, praising him to Jon Snow for making him see the truth).

But in the books, for many that was when the current Stannis fanbase fell in love with his character. They were wonderful scenes, gripping, dramatic, they showed you just how interesting and different this would-be king is from his rivals. He really, truly wants to do the right thing. He has plans to build a more egalitarian society, one where justice is served from the highest to the lowest. When Davos says his lords won't accept him as Hand he just says "Then we'll make new lords" I don't know about the rest of you, but I bent the fucking knee right then and there and it stayed bent. It practically bent itself through the earth's crust when Stannis saved the wall, then went even deeper when he marched on Winterfell and told Theon exactly how frightened he was of Ramsay Bolton.

God bless you BookStannis, and god bless Stephen Dillane for salvaging some dignity from this train-wreck portrayal of his character.

Extra note: they also ruined every surprising element of his character. Making Davos the hand after he was imprisoned? Nope, we're going to have him just drop that on Davos before the Blackwater. The big surprise that Stannis sailed to the North to save the wall when everyone was wondering where he went to? Nope, just going to spoil that right then and there, then make it Mel's decision to both go and to fucking save Davos!!! :bang:

Long time lurker and i just had to make this my first post ever, please bear with me.

Stephen Dillane= Brilliant!

I will miss him and I hate to admit that I will miss the mess of a character D&D have written him to be on screen.

I am so upset and angry. Whether you liked him or not, agreed with him or not, he was one of the most interesting and complex characters in the books (on a mission to re-read all, its been years!). At a loss for words at how they just completely butchered his character, I am left only to imagine just how epic it all could have been had D&D (at least tried stick to) use the incredible source material they have with Mr. Dillane's incredible acting.

I love this thread and Dillane is the man. He IS Stannis now, without a doubt, and watching him bring something of the true character through the shoddy material the show gave him to work with was incredible to watch.

Yeah. I'm going to imagine his acting now when I read Stannis' lines from the Theon I chapter in TWOW...so sad.

Which, in my opinion, is one of the best chapters in the series.. How in seven hells can they leave out Stannis and Theon's interactions?? I was very much looking forward to that. Hope the big twist next season is that we will!

For sure. Stannis with that armor, that cape, that righteous beard and the Mannis attitude. I can hear Stephen Dillane's voice delivering the "i defeated..." speech very easily in my mind.

Why? Why couldn't they have continued his arc into the 6th season? If this was going to be Stannis' ultimate fate, so be it...but why did they rush it like they did? I was WTF'ing the whole time the 'Battle of Winterfell' was onscreen. Dillane's an excellent actor and played a fine Stannis, but it shouldn't have ended this way...and damn, and I'm not even a Mannis fan.

Now that's a thing I'm seeing a lot after the last couple episodes: people that weren't even in the Mannis Hype Train being offended by what happened.

Hes definitely in my top 5 of fave from GoT. He really plays him to a T, and its a real shame that they let their hatred of a character overshadow a performer doing a great job in his role. HE made Stannis likable, and instead of going with the books and giving him a chance as a key player in getting to the throne, D&D took him out in barely 2 episodes and had him illogically kill his only heir instead of making it the idea of those who would rather it happen (Melisandre, Selyse).

Did Dillane get a send off article in EW like Ciaran Hinds and Kit Harrington? Interesting these two did since their characters arent really dead in the books

Stephen Dillane was Stannis Baratheon. His straight forward no bs answering in interviews reminds me of a real life Stannis, especially when he apparently said D&D's Game of Thrones was akin to "German Porn from the 1970s". I cracked up so hard at that..

His exact quote, when asked about the nudity: “I’m a bit old for it. It doesn’t particularly appeal to me, reminds me of German porn from the 1970s. But I presume it serves a purpose, and the merits of the show far outweigh my concerns on that score.”
