Note: The columns for median and arithmetic mean have been swapped by accident, obviously.

Personally, I think it really interesting that the standard deviation has never been as high as for this season's finale. It seems to really be love or hate nowadays; what do you think?

Very interesting. It is the least liked finale out of all season finalea and you are right to point out the SD is quite high. But take a look at the season as a whole, it's SD are usually above 2 for each episode, whereas previous seasons it was under 2 (most of the time anyway). And as we know this season has introduced quite a bit of changes etc.

These votes are taken from the forum I presume? As we know, most of us here are book lovers and we tend to be quite critical of any changes made in the show. I am not surprised by these statistics at all.

I don't really see anything surprising or think that they mean anything at all. People freaked out about Sansa's fate in episode 6 so it got bad ratings nevermind anything else, same for episodes 9 and 10. It's less "love or hate" and more kneejerking because things didn't go the way some people hoped and the bandwagoning effect.

On IMDB episodes 9 and 10 were rated amongst the best in the show (with episode 8 taking the top place obviously) while episode 6 got the worst rating of the season - again due to Sansa.

I'm more interested in the ratings of these forums for the next season, seeing how it'll spoil a lot of things from the books unless GRRM gets WoW out by then.

Martin said he'll have WoW out by then but we'll see. Personally if it's not out by then I'll be avoiding the show like the plague and even if it is out by then I'll be considering the possibility of skipping it all together.

Thank you for your comments.

Yes, they are.

On IMDB episodes 9 and 10 were rated amongst the best in the show

Not everything you say is true, especially about episode 10. Have a look at these figures based on the very same computation as the above. Data's been collected from IMDB.com about an hour ago.

Episode Votes Median Mean Deviation

Season 5, Episode 1 9865 9 8.320 1.951

Season 5, Episode 2 6889 9 8.329 1.959

Season 5, Episode 3 6264 9 8.391 1.955

Season 5, Episode 4 6722 9 8.540 1.985

Season 5, Episode 5 6910 9 8.463 1.940

Season 5, Episode 6 7959 8 7.392 2.627

Season 5, Episode 7 8322 9 8.918 1.676

Season 5, Episode 8 33771 10 9.802 0.926

Season 5, Episode 9 15080 10 9.188 1.830

Season 5, Episode 10 14739 10 7.959 3.148

I think that they do mean something.

Since I'm a (non-butthurt, but anyways) fan myself, I value the data from this forum much higher than that of a general forum like IMDB.

This forum's 510 episode:

1071 7 6.108 3.258 // All votes

895 8 7.113 2.561 // Without 1 and 10 votes

IMDB's:

14739 10 7.959 3.148 // All votes

12782 10 9.025 1.697 // Without 1 and 10 votes

If anything, the butthurtness shows a tad more on IMDB. Who would have thought?

See my edited post above: I conducted that experiment for 510. Left out the ones and the tens though, in order to stay as fair as possible.

But I think it's unfair in itself to leave out people's votes. I guess most people that rated one weren't trolling at all, but wanted to express their disappointments. And why not? That's what these voting threads are all about, not? To express what one felt about an episode.

I know that there is some people that do do sophisticated, well thought-out votes, e.g. having a system like: give 0-1 points for camera work, 0-1 for CGI, 0-3 for acting, and so on. But I guess most people are like me, and just vote what they feel.

To me, if I don't like an episode, it really doesn't matter at all how beautiful the scenery was, or how good the acting was. If I do like an episode though, most likely beautiful scenery and good acting were involved.

When 176 People (16,0%) rate this episode 1 I dont think you can use this forum

Though I really don't want to defend them, I think there definitely was two groups of people voting episodes 1's and 10's to balance each other out. That said I can understand someone legitimately thinking it was 10 a hell of lot more than thinking it was a 1. But it was probably going both ways. And that's something that occurs on IMDB frequently as well.

I always try to vote 3-7. Anything out of this boundary is episodes that were amazing, or trash.

Rarely is there an episode where everything lines up just right to go one way or the other, not when you're thinking about writing, lighting, camera work, scenery, acting, directing etc...

Even horrible episodes have redeeming qualities, and the best tend to have drawbacks. That said, it is usually safe to disregard anything in the 1-2 and 9-10 range. These are generally people who are making a statement, and not ranking the episode fairly. For example, UUU received an enormous number of 1's, this was people reacting to the rape of Sansa and ludicrous Dorne fight. In all fairness, I think that episode deserved a higher score, a 4 or 5 at least. But sometimes it's easier to say; "That sucked, thus the episode sucked, therefore I grant it a 1." Without considering all of the factors.

Regardless, popularity rarely means anything. Lady Gaga and Ke$ha are famous, Paris Hilton is wealthy, and Michael Bay gets to keep making movies. w/e.

I'm similar - even though I disliked season #5 compared to the other seasons, I only rated one episode (the fourth one) as low as 3, and that was after finding out in the next episode that Ser Barristan was somehow dead despite Grey Worm having just saved his life. Even only two episodes (Hardhome and one of the episodes in season #2) I rated as low as 4. This season has been mostly 5s and 6s from me, while earlier seasons were mostly 7 or 8. Only Blackwater, which I loved, did I rate a 10, with 2-3 episodes (such as the Rains of Castamere, A Golden Crown) I scored a 9. I reserve very high or low marks for extreme circumstances.
