Video Games: Excuse me Sir, the machine ate my quarter

Why would anyone want to play Trespasser?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trespasser_(video_game)

It sucked.

Sadly Wert beat you to that joke.;)

I honestly don't remember that game, not even hype about it or it ultimately disappointing. Weird. Then again, it did come out the same year as Half-Life, Starcraft and Baldur's Gate.

I'm discovering new features in Bioware's Trespasser as I play, since I obviously don't care enough to read up on what I buy beforehand. There's an option to turn on various "Trials" that make the game more difficult. One just scales weaker enemies up to your level, another gives all enemies extra abilities and yet a third is solely dedicated to making bears even more terrifying. Remembering my very first encounter with a bear in the base game, that is in fact a scary prospect.

Ha, I used to have a few issues of computer gaming magazines from back then that had the big "10 New Amazing FPSes Coming!" exposés.

Trespasser was always on those lists. So was Half-Life, Jedi Knight, uh ... SiN I think was on there. One of the Quakes, 2 I think. Daikatana obviously. Unreal. Thief.

So many crazy good games and so many super-ambitious games that turned out shit to mediocre.

Kinda crazy remembering those days. Every PC game was an FPS and every developer was generally very ambitious. Was nice to see even if it didn't always work out.

I think outside the rare exception like the newest Quake or Daikatana, I was blissfully unaware of most highly anticipated games. I usually only became aware of them once they had been released.

Gaming mags were something I read for the reviews and to check walkthroughs if I had gotten stuck somewhere.

Have just about made up my mind to buy a PS4

Have previously enjoyed Arkham games so i'd get that one. On my old PS3 i absolutely loved BF3 so i'd probably get BF4. These are the easy choice games.

Also thinking of Destiny - it seems like there is an expansion or a sequel out now. What are peoples opinions on this game?

So i just bought Medieval 2 Total War, with the kingdoms DLC....and i want to install the GOT mod, but i have absolutely no clue how to do that on a steam game, or if it's even possible.

Total noob when it comes to PC games. Anybody have some experience with this? I'd greatly appreciate a PM about it.

Finished Shadowrun: Hong Kong. Good game, great writing. The pacing felt a bit off though, no doubt due to the need to not make any of the missions too hard (in case you picked them early on) or make you too overpowered (to not trivialize the missions you pick later on). Result was a game that, even though I didn't feel like I advanced my character very much, it was always very easy. The ending was also rather abrupt, with an incredibly easy final boss.

Took me 17 hours total, compared to 25 for Dragonall and 11 for Returns.

Next up I guess is the DA:I DLC.

Still on Mad Max. It has become my podcast/audio book game. Which is nice as that's what Hearthstone and Diablo were and I'm burnt out on both of those.

Destiny...What are peoples opinions on this game?

I know we've got a couple people in the thread who love it, but personally I found the game incredibly disappointing and dull. I have not played with the expansion though and know nothing about what it adds to the game.

I still enjoy playing Destiny. The latest expansion did just release this week. You can get a version that includes the expansion and the base game for about the same price as the original. (Something that aggravated existing players obviously...)

Arkham Knight is fun, but I lost interest quickly because of the Batmobile scenes. They quickly became tedious and distracted from what I was doing at the time. At some point I will pick it back up I suppose.

If you did not play The Last of Us on PS3, I highly recommend the Remastered edition. Amazing game.

I also have MGSV that I'm working on now.

Enjoy your purchase!

It's certainly possible with Steam because that's how I do it. I'll PM you when I'm less busy if you need help.

Slowly working my way through another DAI run to play Trespasser (as well as Jaws of Hakkon, which was on sale when I picked up Trespasser). Clearly this was much saner than just trying to remember (or look up) what I did in an earlier playthrough.

On the plus side, I discovered that during some patch in the past 6 months or so, Bioware added a whole bunch of unique items that can be found at various places throughout the main game. Some of it is even useful! Other stuff is simply cool, like a mage staff that is actually just a greatsword hilt, which extends an elemental swordblade when used. It uses greatsword animations and does AOE damage like a two-handed weapon, though obviously far less, since it's still a mage weapon. Short of allowing mages to use melee weapons (not really feasible with the current system, given that spell damage is based on weapon damage), it's the way to go if you want a proper fighter/mage. Of course I am playing as a rogue...

All abilities now also have alternate upgrades, and you can switch between them when not in combat.

I wonder if the added variety bodes well for the next game in the series or whether Bioware are going to reinvent the mechanics again.

Is this a PC only update? I haven't come across this great-sword hilt yet in my second play through that I started a few weeks back. But maybe I haven't been to where you find it. Or are you thinking about the sword hilt you're supposed to make for the battlemage specialisation? I've been particularly slack about collecting all the specialisation items. I just don't know what I'm going to do with my specialisation other than have more passives to unlock passives. I'm not sure which spells to swap out for any new active spells that come with a specialisation, and I just can't be arsed having to manage spell slots before heading in to a fight.

PS$ definitely doesn't have alternate ability upgrades. Maybe that comes with the trespasser DLC? If so I will have to get it sooner rather than later.

In terms of future games, I would like to see smaller areas for the most part. The Korcari wilds in DA:O seems like a decent size for an area.

I hope that doesn't mean bears roaming in packs. That is a damned scary prospect.

I checked the wiki, and according to that at least the schematic (which you get from a War Table operation; you get the weapon from the Astrarium cave in Crestwood) is part of Trespasser, as are the alternarte skill upgrades. I would have thought these kind of modifications would have been part of the accompanying patch, since they affect the base game, but apparently that's not so.

Specialisations at least have more fun Focus abilities than the one you get for free, I'd consider getting one at least for that, and both the Knight Enchanter and Rift Mage items are easy to get from fixed enemies in specific areas (as well as as random drops, like for all specialisations).

No, it apparently just means really tough bears. I did kind of get stuck fighting 3 or 4 waves of 2-3 bears in the Hafter's Wood area in the Hinterlands at one point, but I think that was before I switched on the Trials, I just got unlucky with random spawns. Great Bears now take forever to kill, though, and that's with a fairly optimised Archer/Artificer using a tier 3 bow.

About to buy/download 'Life is Strange' since it's on sale and has received positive (while being a pseudo-Indie title) reviews. Here's hoping that it's worth my extremely valuable time. Anyone else played this?

I love Life is Strange. It's really cute. There's a lot of story-telling and very little game-play, though. It's all about making decisions and seeing their outcome play out in the story. Nothing you do really requires tactics or skill.

It has a quite fun side-quest involving trying to spot (or sometimes provoke) certain photo opportunities. If you play it I recommend trying to complete it (look for the photo page in your journal).
