Star Wars Episode VII: The Fourth Awakens

The interesting thing is that from a few of the plot summaries I've read, the actual story itself is pretty decent. Just very badly written with some bizarre narrative choices. I'm thinking I'll just wait until the entire story has been summarised in more detail and read that instead.

Well I finished Aftermath, and this above is exactly what I would say about it. The writing gnawed at me the entire way through, but the story was interesting enough to push through it. Some of the interludes were pretty decent, and one especially. If anyone has any questions about the book, feel free to ask.

Ouch.

But yeah, true. I feel the same way about them for the most part. The stories are fine, they're just badly executed most of the time.

For all the complaints about the politics and such, Sidious' schemes were interesting. How many people do you think could use a taxation dispute to become the most powerful person in the Galaxy?

What could have been.

Well, what do you think it tells us about what we can expect in Force Awakens?

Also wondering.

At Target yesterday I was greeted at the door by a giant cardboard Chewbacca that gave me a Wookie "Rwwwwwoooor " thanks to a motion sensor. The signs encouraged me to take a selfie with him... If my kids had been there I totally would have.

I was there for dish soap and batteries, but of course I had to swing by the toy department. They had the usual Star Wars aisle, but they even had the "seasonal" section all set up. (The area that usually has back to school or holiday stuff.)

Most of it was what I expected. I will say that I was a bit surprised to see
"Darth Vader's hand and light saber"
I suppose that means it will be part of the speculated relic hunt.

I'm slogging my way through it. So far the story is not interesting enough to bring balance to the Force this crappy prose, but I'll push through.

It took quite a while for the story to come around for me. Almost quit once or twice early on to be honest.

Honestly, not much but below are two things I think will play to the Force Awakens.
1) the New Republic is already looking to drop 90% of its military once total victory against the Empire can be declared, leaving each planet to have its own military to make the galaxy a 'democracy' again. If this happens, and the First Order is built up in secret, it wouldn't be hard to see how the New Republic could be overthrown and turned to the Resistance, but just my thoughts. 2) Rae Sloane meets with her unnamed Admiral at the end of the book, and he pretty much states that he wants the old Empire broken so something new and better can take its place. I guess this could possibly be our first look at Snoke, but who knows.
I've read some things on social media saying the film will be released on 17th December in the UK, rather than the 18th. No idea why

This is confirmed now. It's quite common for UK-made movies to be released earlier in the UK generally, and in recent years this has even extended to other productions. I was rather hoping we would get it earlier, if only a little. Better than later, at least.

France is getting it on the 16th though - IIRC that's because movies released on Wednesday in France.

Pfft... earlier? We get it on the 17th here in Aus too - which means we get it a whole 10 or so hours earlier than you. B)

Movies generally release on a Thursday here.

(Queue Anti-Targ to say Hobbiton gets it a couple of hours before we do) :)

Just doing a little googling on whether Fox will still handle any of the distribution, apparently not unless I missed something.

It's going to start things off on a sour, or at best jarring, note right at first to see the Sleeping Beauty Castle and not the 20th Century Fox logo but worst of all not hearing the fanfare!!! And worse, maybe hearing "Wish Upon A Star" in it's place. However apropos it may be, it just won't feel right. :bawl:

From Wookieepedia:

The 20th Century Fox Fanfare was composed in 1933 by Alfred Newman, longtime head of Fox's music department. In 1954, an extended version was created for CinemaScope films, and debuted on the film The Robe.

In the mid-to-late 1970s, the 20th Century Fox logo had all but been phased out. However, Lucas enjoyed the logo and Alfred Newman music so much that he insisted it be used for his Star Wars films. The fanfare and logo have, since then, enjoyed a rebirth in usage.

When John Williams signed onto the Star Wars project, one of his first moves was to compose the Main Title to Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope in the same key as the 20th Century Fox Fanfare. He has said before that it was truly meant as another extension of the fanfare, and it has since then been adopted by Star Wars film score buffs as part and parcel of the scores to Star Wars.

When Sony released the original trilogy Special Edition scores, and the Ultimate Edition score to Episode I, each set included on it a recording of the 20th Century Fox Fanfare.

When the films were released digitally in April 2015 by The Walt Disney Company, the Fox opening, as well as the fanfare, were absent, prompting a disappointed reaction in some fans.

And it's not from any like of or support of Fox studios in particular, that opening preamble is just so much a part of how Star Wars is supposed to begin, it seems integrally attached.

I think I could handle seeing the "Bad Robot" logo in conjunction with or even instead of the "Lucasfilm" one, still jarring but I could handle it. But not having the Fox logo but especially the fanfare, that will be a brutal.

After a bit of a further search, it may just look like this, maybe after the Disney Castle and Bad Robot logo, or maybe it will just start up though I think probably the former. That's from how episodes I - VI (excluding IV) now begin on Amazon digital versions.

Maybe it's just a minor thing, but these things mean something to me in getting the "feel" right, and if any movie is about "feeling" something, it's Star Wars.

I agree about the Fox fanfare. I drive my wife crazy because any movie that comes on screen or tv with a Fox logo and fanfare, I lean over and give an excited whisper: "Star Wars!" :)

Hopefully they'll have a Star Wars version of the castle, like they do with Pirates of the Caribbean.

We picked up the new Disney Infinity last week. I gotta say, it wasn't that bad seeing a Tie Fighter chase an X-Wing behind the Cinderella castle in the beginning promo. It worked, somehow.

Maybe because Star Wars is a part of Disney World for me, it's not too jarring. One of my favorite things about living near Orlando is being able to go to the Star Wars Weekends in Hollywood Studios. It's just cool to walk around and trade junk with Jawas. Or watch the Stormtroopers chase after a Tusken Raider for stealing a tourist's bottle of water. Or see Darth Vader walk by with a Stormtrooper escort.

This is what has really eased by concerns about Disney's ownership of SW. The way they've handled SW at the parks for years has been brilliant. They put money into it, they have quality characters, displays and shows, and the way it's run shows  a high level of care. What's more, it made me feel better about the prequels, seeing how much fun they could be for everyone.

Looks like I'm buying a ticket to London.

Yeah, I'm not going to France just to watch Star Wars. :P

Seriously, if anyone is on the MD eastern shore, or will be in December, we need to get in touch.

I've got NO ONE to see this with here :(

If someone can provide the transportation I'm buying the tickets, popcorn, and cokes!

I track the change in my social life by who I went to see the prequel trilogy with:

I went to see TPM with about 20 fraternity brothers at a midnight showing on opening night.

I went to see AotC with about 6 classmates from chiropractic school at a matinee on opening day.

I went to see RotS with my dad about a week after it opened.

It's opening in the United Arab Emirates on December 15th, apparently part of a deal as they did some location shooting there.

io9 has pulled together all of the "new canon" sources to put together a pretty good account of what happened after Return of the Jedi and it's...erm...pretty similar to the old EU.

Weird.

Oh, and the good news is that (apparently) all of the Knights of the Old Republic stuff is still canon.
