NFL 2015 Week Two: 16 teams still have hope

Holy crap, did I go to bed before they listed Jim Tomsula's previous jobs? Deadspin has the graphic and it's amazing:

  • Medical Equipment Sales Rep
  • Newspaper Delivery Man
  • Night Janitor
  • Firewood Cutter
  • Cleaned Floors at a Department Store
  • Food Sales Rep
  • Doormat Salesman

I can't remember, did the 49ers put their head coach opening on Craigslist?

ETA: Now I understand Byron Maxwell's day

Is it me, or is that the bottom ranking for each of those job fields? lol

Did he pick that job just because it looks so sad on a resume?

This is my guess. Jim Tomsula's life is a long series of tragedies interrupted by the occasional meatball hoagie.

I was going to say headcoach of the 2015 49ers is just a continuation of this fact but then I thought Jay Gruden, Jack Del Rio, Gus Bradley and Mike Pettine would all get offended.

 1) He's listed as day-to-day, but then again, aren't we all?

 2) I'm offended. I'm sure I'll get over myself, but I'll never forget.

After every key contributor on the 2013 Superbowl team except Colin Kaepernick either got injured, retired, signed elsewhere or joined the Heaven's Gate cult, I think we all expected this to be the worst team in football. Didn't we?

After week 1 though? I was legitimately impressed. This is like The Replacements in every way possible. I'm now convinced Jim Tomsula won't rest until he's the very best at his profession, whether that's Superbowl winning headcoach or #1 doormat salesman in the greater Barstow region.

He'd need to gussy up the job title. "Threshold aesthetics specialist" would impress a lot of people.

Or make people think he's a bikini waxer.

Oh yeah, I'm still convinced they're going to stink (I mean that first half last night was fucking priceless) I just think the title itself carries a bit more cache than say "Raiders Head Coach" or "Browns Head Coach".

I think the 49ers will be good this season. Their defense looked great (Vikings did contribute to that). But the Mangenious seems to have gotten his mojo back. They clearly have a potent running game. But the most encouraging thing I saw yesterday was how Caep was not throwing fastballs all the time. For the first time ever, he had some touch to his throws. He was taking pace off, putting some air etc.. He was also quite willing to stay patient in the pocket and going through his progressions. Two things sadly Vick never managed to do. So there is legitimate reason to think that the team will be good. I don't know whether they can make the playoff in that division. But I liked what I saw.

Yeah, I'm a bit torn between are they actually okay or do the Vikings just stink. Kaep did look pretty good, but it seemed like they were keeping it simple for him. Not sure how well that's going to work as the season stretches on. Not so sure regarding Mangenious in the longterm either. I like the aggressiveness, but that's bound to rubberband on you before long. Seems to me that kind of helped to cover some of the warts defensively.

Wait, what?

From the 2013 super bowl team, the 49ers still have the following players (besides Kaep) that were major contributors to that Super Bowl run:

NaVorro Bowman
Ahmed Brooks
Bruce Miller
Michael Wilhoite
Joe Staley
Alex Boone
Vernon Davis

While not major contributors, Tramaine Brock, Grant Celek, and a Daniel Kilgore also returned from the 2013 Super Bowl team.

Even though the 49ers lost more talent than 75% of the league had on their entire roster, the 49ers were stacked with talent. Any thought that the 49ers would ever be a bottom 5 team was pure media hysteria. No way the 49ers would be worse than the Bucs, Raiders, Jags, Redskins, or Browns. The 49ers may not make the playoffs (probably won't), but that's likely more a function of playing in a stacked division.

I would agree that they are probably still marginally better than the dregs you mentioned, but I don't think they would be likely to be a playoff team in any division. Maybe a one and done Wildcard or something, but nothing approaching what they were in 2013.

Basically everything I could have (and should have) said. I was amazed at one point that he threw a crossing route of about 10 yards and the ball didn't get there with the force to dislocate the receiver's fingers.

I was being hyperbolic on only Kaepernick being left. I knew there was a few others but not many. And even of those you name there was/is legitimate concern that they'd be the same guy they were (i.e.: VD, Bowman).

Regardless this was a 12 win team two years ago and an 8 win team last year. It's not crazy to think they'd be a 4 win team this year after having arguably the worst offseason exodus we've ever seen including losing a top 4 coach  (and his talented DC) under circumstances that left a general cloud of negativity hovering over the organization and anger at the owner. Plus to replace them with a guy who's a bit less polished than your average CEO/Head Coach (and some pizza delivery guys) and a new DC who hadn't done anything involving a defense in 5 years...I mean the chance for fiasco wasn't small.

Instead they came out with passion and played smash-mouth football like the best of the Harbaugh years. They might've lacked polish like their head coach but definitely not energy. It was all really impressive and even more surprising. It'll be a lot of fun if they can keep it up.

High praise! :)

But yes, Kaep looked good. Apparently he has been working with Kurt Warner this offseason. Seems to have paid off.

Where is Dub when you need him?

Dallas traded for Brice Butler to step in and help the receiving corps during Dez Bryant's absence. Oakland will get a fifth round pick if he is on the Cowboy's roster for six games or more? As I haven't spent a lot of time watching the Raiders in the last couple of years, I need an Oakland fan to interject.

I've never heard of him before yesterday. I see he was targeted 52 times over the last 2 yrs and only has 30 receptions. That seems like a really low rate, but that's just feel, not based on data. Could also speak to who he had throwing him the ball.

Plus he's primarily a deep threat.  Such a rate would be terrible on bubble screens and slant routes, but I don't know if it is unusual for a guy who mostly catches passes 20+ yards downfield.
