Stinkhole
I've never read Fifty Shades but I think people misunderstand it. It's not supposed to be erotic. More of a romance novel based around the idea of a woman snagging the masculine ideal. The erotica is supposed to add a bit of safe danger to the situation. HexMachina
The problem people have with Fifty Shades isn't it's failure at being erotic, but its failure at being an even halfway decent novel.

Perhaps the novel is meant to encourage abstinence.

Ir doesn't matter what the plot is, it's horribly written and an absolutely abysmal book
End of Disc One
Most 50 Shades fans I know don't actually think that the books are "good." Similarly, I watch The Walking Dead even though I'm aware that it's objectively not a very good show.

Xray the Enforcer
[mod] Let's keep this thread focused on Paolini, please. We don't need to rehash 50 Shades of Shitshow yet again. Thank you. [/mod]

The Marquis de Leech
He's right, to some extent. Tastes do differ, and I think that's all he can really say in the context (he's hardly going to say that his critics are right and that Eragon is shit). Problem is, while there are people out there who hate Shakespeare, Dickens, and Austin, few would question their literary merit - it's quite possible to find a classic work unreadable and dull. Even Paolini's most fervent supporters would struggle to point to Eragon as meriting classic status. I see he's familiar with Gormenghast too. Cue Paolini self-comparisons to Peake... The Marquis de Leech
Had an "Oh My God" moment in visiting the library today. They've got a Spanish translation of Eragon... which means that the library stocks the book in the Spanish section... which means Christopher Paolini's work is sitting next to the likes of Isabel Allende and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Bennis of the Brown Stench
I actually like Oragon quite a bit. It was derivative but the story of Eragorn had a lot of heart. I didn't like the next two as much as Eragono and didn't even bother with the third. It will be interesting to see how Paolini has evolved as a writer since penning Aragon. stonebender
ha, I'd actually give Eragon a try before more Garcia Marquez. One Hundred Years...nearly defeated me.

Teng Ai Hui
Surely, he means that 100YoS was so unbelievably good that he couldn't bring himself to finish it and that he might try Eragon as a pallet cleanser until he again has the strength to complete 100YoS.
