Son of Morning by Mark Adler.  I've heard about this since it took a year or more to come to the US.  Decent.  It is a little rough in narrative at times.  Interesting take on historical speculative fiction with some decent action.  Not great.  But good.

 

 

The new US edition omits the prologue (from the original) entirely. Probably because of its version of the Genesis creation myth, which has Lucifer as the benevolent creator.

Hmmm. That's a weird one. The prologue is probably the single most important piece of world-building. Might as well have banned the book.
