Will we see any other sample chapter?

It was a great choice to give Arya a cool and collected kill when she was supposed to be a wreck, and then in season 5 give her a kill where she completely lost it when she was supposed to be cool and collected?

Arya lost it when she killed that Frey after the Red Wedding, but all her other kills were cold and calculated. Meryn Trant's death was violent, to be sure, but she didn't go crazy like when she killed the Frey, or the Tickler in the books. Trant's death was also cold and collected.

I watched the scene again, you're right, violent but in control. (A little over the top with the violence honestly).

Bryndenbfish's twitter is very informative.. Yipes! I want to see this in print.. (molestation, valyrian steel  breast plate, Pyat Pree, shade of the evening visions, sailing into battle..) I have to go out, now, but I hope there'll be something up in the way of a more detailed report (tantalising as tweets are) when I get back.

I too think it'll be the Damphair...if GRRM is completely out of tune with reality.

I mean, he's got to know he pissed off a substantial amount of readers with his announcement, so is he going to piss them off even further by finally - finally! - releasing a Winds chapter of a character despised by most of the fandom? Talk about salt in the wound (get it, cause Dampy is always salty?)

And what kind of message would it send: "Hey, readers, it's me, Uncle George! You're still watching that HBO show with those boring characters no one cares about, like Jon Snow, Dany, Tyrion? Zzzzzz, I'm asleep already! My book is where all the fun's at, and to prove it here's a chapter of the most entertaining and beloved character ever, the Damphair!"

And there's also the fact that a sample chapter is the only way GRRM has now of telling a part, however small, of his story before HBO, like he did with Mercy and Alayne. So why would he waste that opportunity on a character D&D are not even including?

Oh, and if all that wasn't reason enough to keep Dampy away, he'd be giving ammunition to those who think he's really behind on Winds because they'll say: "Did you hear, GRRM is releasing the Damphair chapter he wrote like five years ago? See, he hasn't written anything new!"

My guess is on a Melisandre chapter if he was feeling ballsy. If not, Dany or Sam.

The chapter is indeed better than most of show Euron, and they had impactful events to show him as a good characters. But alas, the kingsmoot was completely wasted.

I really don't know what to think anymore.  ADWD was a massive depart from the first four novels in terms of feel and style.  The narrative and locations didn't feel like an ASOIAF novel.

The violence in the first four novels felt gritty and realistic for the main part.  Some of it was ridiculous (Mountain Clans for example) but on a whole it was gritty, low fantasy for the most part and the sadistic characters were believable not only within themselves but the way others reacted to them.

Then Ramsay came along.  A cartoon villain in an unbelievable scenario effectively appealing to torture porn fans.

Up until this point the mainly ridiculous characters had existed beyond the narrow sea.  The Iron Born were a tad ridiculous but just about stayed within the realms of believability even if their culture is very 2D.

Now we have the new chapter.  Pedophillia, amputees, tortured pregnant women etc.  I don't get it.  The series was fine without the violence turning all "Saw" and contrived.  The villains of the piece become more flamboyant and James Bond in nature.

And worse is the sheer amount of released chapters now.  By my reckoning he has released over 15% of the book already in sample chapters.  I understand his angst.  The show is talked about all the time and he is desperate to remain relavent and for his tale to remain relevant as he watches potential readers disappear in droves (a lot of people won't bother finishing the books once they know the story outcome from the show).  But to release so much of the book?  It's simply not wise.

And worst of all is that the story needs to pick up pace.  We have over 10% of the book already revealed to us and yet not a single chapter has really moved the story along.  If he truly is to finish the series in two books then the pace surely has to pick up massively sooner rather than later?!

I think this chapter was released intentionally to show how toned done Euron was in the show and because he wanted to release it years ago. I don't think all chapters will be like that. There will be travellogues too. And food, lot's of food.

That's not true at all, since GRRM offered a choice of three chapters to the audience; Mercy, Sons of the Dragon, and Aeron.

While I am a bit disconcerted about the pace of the story, and disliked the Aeron chapter, I think it is incorrec to say that not a single chapter has moved the story along. The Arya, Sansa, and Theon chapters have moved things along, at least to the extent that discussing Arya, Sansa, or the northern story-line is difficult without reference to the preview chapters.  I do agree that the Arianne chapters and material set in Essos is disappointing.

From what I can tell, ADWD also had about 15% released beforehand, at least in some form.
