Shane snow
Excuse me if this has been brought up before. I tried seaching but wasn't sure what to search for. I kno there are theories that the others created the wall and I was wondering if there are any hints about the wall actually holding something. Like it's not actually a wall to hold anything in but really the others original fortress and there is something hidden inside that they want. id also like to add that when they say watchers on the wall that maybe they don't mean literally they are on the wall but that they watch over the wall keepin something from the others
Daemon Blackfyre IV
The others didn't make the wall, it protects the realm from them the magic in it won't allow them to pass it
Lady Fishbiscuit
Old Nan told a story about 79 deserters from the nightfort being buried in the wall (look up the 79 sentinels). Who knows what else is in there! I wold think it highly likely that some sort of blood sacrifice is involved in the original wall magic.
King Viserys Targaryen IV
I have seen a lot of people theorize that there might be an Ice Dragon in the Wall. That the Horn of Joramun is a Dragon horn, and that is how it will take down the wall, by waking the ice dragon inside Not that I buy that, but it is one I have seen a lot. ellstaysia
I do like the ice dragon theory. there has to be something buried in there for sure.
TerrorVoid
I've heard a theory, that the wall is just side effect from man\others border, that stops not only others, but also snow, frosts and thus on, leading them into stockpiling into a wall

Makes you wonder if there were other walls or if they had to guard from the south at one point.
SevasTra82
The others didn't make the wall, it protects the realm from them the magic in it won't allow them to pass it Do we know that for a fact though? That is the legend that has always been passed down, but as Sam started to uncover (and GRRM hinted at)...history may not always be what it seems. Besides, The Others have never appeared anywhere near the wall in ASOIAF....how do we even know that's the case? A magical ice wall to keep out magical ice creatures just doesn't seem to make sense to me.Everything we know about The Wall and The Others is passed down history from 10,000 year old tales. I have a strong suspicion that we will learn very soon what is true and what is false with Westeros's passed down history.
Philpenn
Haunted Forest would be the closest they've come to The Wall right? That's pretty close.
Sensenmenn
Just wanted to point out the oath says watchers on the walls. Makes you wonder if there were other walls or if they had to guard from the south at one point. this probably means castle walls because the NW was around the before the wall was built. Back during the LN The NW probably consisted of every castle and kingdom in westerose and wasn't an independent organization in the north.
Jon Fossoway
Probably a lot of ice dragons.
redtree
The wall isn't thick, if there was any dragon it probably wouldn't be huge

Not thick at all...
Melisandre's White Pubes
"the top is wide enough for a dozen knights to ride abreast, and is even thicker at the base"nope... Not thick at all...App. 60 feet thick is not very wide at all for a 700 foot tall structure.
Jon Fossoway
The top is not that thick. The quote says it so.
redtree
The top is not that thick. The quote says it so.Exactly, it only fits 3 men walk side by side, so roughly 6 feet wide
Jon Fossoway
Hm. anyways. I don´t think the top has a regular width. Must be wider at some points and thinner at others. Remember it´s 300 kms long.
Shane snow
GRRM inspiration for the wall was Hadrians wall. It is only assumed that that it was built to keep the Romans from the barbarians but there is actually no proof this is why it was built. Much like the the wall in asoiaf
