Underrated Actors and Actresses

I'd say Kristen Stewart probably still qualifies. For years, she was publicly lumbered with the reputation of being that 'wooden, dead eyed Twilight girl who bit her lower lip a lot around Jacob and Edward.' That's even though she's long since admitted she phoned in her performances and only did those films for the exposure and the money. She was excellent in anything she was in beforehand, and she's been excellent in everything she's been in since...The Runaways, Adventureland, Still Alice, Welcome to the Rileys, Clouds of Sils Maria etc. In fact, along with Jennifer Lawrence, she's one of my favourite younger actresses. She's still terrible in the Twilight series, though, but I don't believe that anyone could have worked believably with the dialogue and character prompts she had.

Paul Dano doesn't get much love (or many roles), but he's been awesome in everything I've seen him in.

Yup. I remember seeing him in There Will Be Blood and thinking how good he was.

Josh Hartnett. People cruelly refer to him as 'Danny from Pearl Harbor' sometimes, completely overlooking things like his performance in the underrated Lucky Number Slevin.

He's great in Penny Dreadful, and I was pretty shaky upon initially hearing he was in it.

Sam Rockwell is pretty underrated in my eyes, he brings it in everything he's in. John Hawkes is another good one. I originally knew Hawkes from Deadwood and was pretty surprised when he played some intimidating characters in Winter's Bone and Martha Marcy May Marlene so well. Guy has range.

Travis Fimmel.

Okay, yeah, I know many people sing high praise of him and he's not that underrated, but man, his performance in Vikings deserve way more recognition, and some awards !

As good as she was in some of her movoes, the public stench of Twilight doesn't so easily go away. And especially because she was so, so, so very awful in it. Like, worst acting ever. Like, cheap porn level of acting. I have seen her in Still Alice and Clouds of Sils Maria and she did a great work, but she is nowhere near what some of the young actresses like Vikander, Larson, Ronan are doing.

As for Lawrence, God created the word overrated having her in mind.

Now, as for underrated actors and actresses. Charlotte Rampling should get more credit for her outstanding career. I feel like Tom Hardy's best work will never be noticed (what idiot can nominate him for Mad Max or The Revenant with The Legend coming out in the same year). I'd also like to see Helena Bonham Carter doing some other work than being a regular in Burton's movies, which people always have in mind when they talk to her. I expect some great things from Elizabeth Olsen.

And lastly, as much as you praise Cate Blanchett, you are still underrating her :)

David Tennant. He showed he can play the funny man, the smart man, he can do drama and sad moments incredibly and now with Jessica Jones he showed he can be a truly creepy guy too.

To me he showed all the traits a good actor needs, he can do it all.

I have mixed feelings about Love and Mercy as a film, but Dano is excellent (as the young Brian Wilson) in it, too.

Perhaps it's different abroad, but Tennant is incredibly popular here in the UK for his roles in Doctor Who, Broadchurch, etc, etc.

I'm not "in" on who is considered popular in Hollywood, definitely not overseas haha

I'm glad to hear that though, he deserves it. Great actor.

I agree. Not only that, but I'd say she's far more consistent than Lawrence, even if haven't achieved the highs J-Law did in her best performances (partially by just not having access to roles as good as she had).

Fargo seems to be changing this finally, but I'd say Kirsten Dunst is one of the most underrated actresses in the US as well.

Maybe not so much underrated, but underused: Ben Foster, Cillian Murphy, Tilda Swinton. I love Emily Blunt, but she's not necessarily. I'd love to see more of Gary Oldman and Willem Dafoe.

I'm gonna watch Boondock Saints now.

I was hugely a fan of Lawrence, but she has not grown as an actor since X-Men: First Class. I grow more annoyed with her by the month.
