League of Thrones: Round 13, now with 48 characters

Since a couple people mentioned characters they'd like to see, is there going to be any way to replace characters on the list? I think it would be a good idea personally, particularly if this is meant to continue past the eventual publication of The Winds of Winter.

Ok, it looks like I'll have time to calculate the results today, so round 1 is hereby officially closed. Thanks again to everyone who voted. Results will be here in a couple of hours or so.

For now I'd like to limit the pool to 32 characters, until we know whether the format works out or not. The idea is to add more characters at some point in the future (probably right after round 12). Since it is impossible to get a pool of 32 people everyone agrees on, I think it's best to leave it this way for now.

Ok, here's the results of round 1:

Jorah Mormont   vs.   Jon Snow   1-8

Varys   vs.   Arya Stark   1-8

Yoren   vs.   Sansa Stark   1-8

Brienne Tarth   vs.   Daenerys Targaryen   4-5

Stannis Baratheon   vs.   Sandor Clegane   5-4

Eddard Stark   vs.   Tyrion Lannister   2-7

Asha Greyjoy   vs.   Cersei Lannister   6-3

Davos Seaworth   vs.   Oberyn Martell   6-3

Brynden Tully   vs.   Mance Rayder   1-8

Barristan Selmy   vs.   Jaime Lannister   2-7

Wyman Manderly   vs.   Samwell Tarly   2-7

Petyr Baelish   vs.   Aemon Targaryen   5-4

Robb Stark   vs.   Brandon Stark   3-6

Renly Baratheon   vs.   Tormund Giantsbane   4-5

Catelyn Tully   vs.   Theon Greyjoy   6-3

Doran Martell   vs.   Eddison Tollett   5-4

This means Jon, Arya, Sansa and Mance won by the biggest margin and thus are awarded the "Lord Commander of the Kingsguard"-award.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This produces the following ranking:

1. Arya Stark 88.89
1. Jon Snow 88.89
1. Mance Rayder 88.89
1. Sansa Stark 88.89
5. Jaime Lannister 77.78
5. Samwell Tarly 77.78
5. Tyrion Lannister 77.78
8. Asha Greyjoy 66.67
8. Brandon Stark 66.67
8. Catelyn Tully 66.67
8. Davos Seaworth 66.67
12. Daenerys Targaryen 55.56
12. Doran Martell 55.56
12. Petyr Baelish 55.56
12. Stannis Baratheon 55.56
12. Tormund Giantsbane 55.56
17. Aemon Targaryen 44.44
17. Brienne Tarth 44.44
17. Eddison Tollett 44.44
17. Renly Baratheon 44.44
17. Sandor Clegane 44.44
22. Cersei Lannister 33.33
22. Oberyn Martell 33.33
22. Robb Stark 33.33
22. Theon Greyjoy 33.33
26. Barristan Selmy 22.22
26. Eddard Stark 22.22
26. Wyman Manderly 22.22
29. Brynden Tully 11.11
29. Jorah Mormont 11.11
29. Varys 11.11
29. Yoren 11.11

As you may see, I decided to calculate the ranking differently, awarding points according to the percentage of votes received instead of the quotient. This really just means that the results scale better, awarding points between 0 and 100 instead of 0 and 1. Mathematically it's the same thing anyway. I then rounded the results to 2 decimal places.

Arya, Jon, Mance and Sansa are all tied for number 1, meaning they are joint holders of the "Lord of the Seven Kingdoms"-award.

Meanwhile Brynden, Jorah, Varys and Yoren are tied for last place and get the "Black Cells"-award.

Starting with next month I will also award a "Chaos is a ladder"-award to the person with the highest rise, and a "Chaos is a pit"-award for the person with the lowest fall, but this month that seems rather pointless. If there wasn't a tie for first place there would also be a "Hand of the King"-award.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have now used the ranking to determine the matches for round 2, with neighbouring characters going up against each other. Where there were ties I used a random method to determine the opponents. I have included the character's [rank]:

[1] Mance Rayder   vs.   [1] Jon Snow

[1] Arya Stark   vs.  [1] Sansa Stark

[5] Jaime Lannister   vs.   [5] Samwell Tarly

[5] Tyrion Lannister   vs.   [8] Catelyn Tully

[8] Davos Seaworth   vs.   [8] Brandon Stark

[8] Asha Greyjoy   vs.   [12] Doran Martell

[12] Stannis Baratheon   vs.   [12] Petyr Baelish

[12] Tormund Giantsbane   vs.   [12] Daenerys Targaryen

[17] Sandor Clegane   vs.   [17] Renly Baratheon

[17] Aemon Targaryen   vs.   [17] Eddison Tollett

[17] Brienne Tarth   vs.   [22] Robb Stark

[22] Oberyn Martell   vs.   [22] Cersei Lannister

[22] Theon Greyjoy   vs.   [26] Wyman Manderly

[26] Barristan Selmy   vs.   [26] Eddard Stark

[29] Brynden Tully   vs.   [29] Jorah Mormont

[29] Yoren   vs.   [29] Varys

Edit: Round 2 will once again run for a month, which means until 30th April, once again it may last a bit longer than that, depending on when I have time to do the calculations. Thanks in advance to those of you who vote.

Edit2: I would also like some opinions on "League of Thrones" as a more catchy and creative title and on the awards. ^_^

I have no objections to "League of Thrones" as a title. I think I prefer it slightly over "League of Characters", and considerably over "Kool Kids".

The awards are good.

I think it would be good if a character who spends 3 consecutive months ranked 29th or lower gets dropped and replaced with another character.  Seriously, in what universe is Yoren a more popular character than Tywin?

My suggestion would have been to replace characters in the bottom X who have lost their last Y matchups, for some values of X and Y. That would allow the new characters to start from 0 without then being at a high risk of being replaced again immediately.

I think those conditions are a bit harsh, there's always going to be a person that's the least popular and thus will end up down there. While I agree, that Tywin objectively is a more popular character than Yoren, there's apparently some people that like him better than Sansa, and there's people that like him better than Varys, so I don't think it would be fair to take him out just because he happens to be the least popular out of a group of some of the most popular characters. It is just impossible to come up with a combination of 32 people that would make everyone happy, there will always be people saying "But what about this person? How are they not a part of this?". Yoren did fairly well in a similar 1v1-format in the past, that's how he qualified for this in the first place. I can see why it makes little sense to keep someone in the running who will just be buried every single round, but it's a bit too early to decide that after just one round, when he and others just happened to be matched up with characters they couldn't possible defeat. It's not like he's Penny or some other hated person.

As admitted above, there probably should be some mechanism to take a character out, if nobody really cares for them. It might not really be fair to get someone out just because they lost with 5-6 a couple of times in a row, though. What I would suggest instead, is that characters that average less than 20% of the votes would be replaced, starting after about round 4 or 5 when the scores might actually be representative of their popularity, or lack thereof. For example, after 5 rounds each character should have at least 100 points, which would mean that they got an average of 20 points per round. Those who don't meet that goal, are out. Would that be an apropriate measure?

Yeah, that also makes sense! (Though I do want to say that I was thinking more than a couple losses would be required, as well as being at the bottom of the ranking.) And it's probably worth waiting a little to see what the exact number should be.

Thanks to everyone who voted so far.:)

The current round will remain open until 3rd May, so if you want to vote, you can do so until then. I'll probably close it at some point on Tuesday in the morning and then post results and the matchups for round 3 as soon as possible. If you're no longer happy with your choices, you may edit your posts until then.
