I agree this is no excuse. Sometimes I try to guess why D&D might have chosen to do this. I do not agree with them. And I certainly believe they should have not killed Grenn and Pyp during the battle and certainly not both of them because those suddenly loyal instant friends make no sense?

Or they should have introduced them last season by for example giving them a scene with Jon or with Edd, ... Oh, wait, you would have a scene which just flesh out some characters. Why would you ever do that? :dunno:

Oh, I knew you didn't agree, I was just hammering it in. Not a good move. They shot themselves in the foot, because now, when it really matters, who are these people gathered around him?

I'd like to see the script notes for that scene.

Olly is perturbed. Olly furrows his brow. Olly is deeply troubled. Olly... Olly... Olly! How many times did they cut to him, at least five.

Ah, new Olly nods gifs:

I love that tumbler place.

Still, I cannot wait to see him being eaten.

It wouldn't surprise me if they used one of their extremely rare "tasteful" cutaways (a la Satannis death) for their precious fanfic character. The one time an Olly reaction shot would be deserved, will be the one time we don't get one.

Sometimes internet doesn't get the message completely go through :P Yeah, it does indeed completely lack of emotion while this actually should be more emotional than the battle at the Wall? At the battle you had already Ygritte who died. So it is not like the audience would not feel any emotional impact with the battle?

But Grenn's and especially Pyp's death IMO is just another result of their "We need to shock people"-mentality. Book readers knew for example Ygritte would have died so her death would not be shock for them. But book readers need also be shocked, don't they? So let's kill Grenn and Pyp then. I believe this also one of the main reasons why they killed Talisa because in the books Robb's wife is still alive.

And while they actually have fewer characters in the books, they actually kill for this reason more characters off than in the books. And then they have suddenly a problem: who would care for Jon? Here come the InstaFriends! We will have of course also the InstaLords, maybe the InstaPack, maybe InstaWarging, ... But the problem is of course they completely neglected to built any connection between the audience and those InstaPeople/InstaThing which might have as result a lot of things will just feel flat as those InstaFriends suddenly being loyal to Jon.

Grenn at least gets Noye's heroic death, standing as the shield that guards the realms of men.  Given that they don't have Noye, I'm glad they have someone of importance there.  Since they did it, they need to introduce a new person and establish that relationship with Jon before this point though.  Because it's remarkable how we see none aside from Edd and Sam in Season 5.

I am still gnashing my teeth, Stannis Style, over the fact that they cast this guy who can really act as a perfect Jaime, and ... then they turned him into Larry. :bang:  What a waste! (And same goes for the gorgeous Carice van Houten and Lena Heady and Peter and Alexander Siddiq and Indira Varma and every other actor for whom they've written shitty lines and torpedoed the most interesting parts of their stories in the name of efficient storytelling potatoes and whores and brothels and torture porn.

My retcon is that the InstaFriends got really creeped out and began avoiding Jon when he started spending all his time with Olly.

Jon: ... and then Olly said [get's interrupted]

InstaFriend 1: Jon, we're all really happy that you've made a new friend, but...

Jon: ... and there was the time Olly had this potato and...

InstaFriend 2: Jon, seriously we're worried about you. We even tried to get Sam to talk to you, but he wouldn't shut up about killing that Other and bragging about banging his wildling girlfriend, refugee, whatever she is.

InstaFriend 1: [interupting] I think he's trying to lure away Ghost too.

InstaFriend 2: Let's deal with one problem at a time. Jon are you even listening?

Jon: [depressed Jon voice] I had a lot of feelings when he killed my ex in front of me... but then he did that nod! And I was like this kid is cool! He's got what it takes to be Lord Commander. So I started grooming him...

InstaFriend 1: Seven hells Jon! This isn't healthy, and I'm really starting to question your judgement.

InstaFriend 2: Also what's up with the kid's story about how giant wildlings ate his village? Like, none of the wildings we've fought look or act anything like that. I asked Tormund about it, but he's just sulky, wish he'd crack a joke once in a while...

Jon: ... so Olly asks if we can get a cat, and I say "Well I don't know, if a cat would get on with Ghost?", but then he get's one of his looks, you know those looks he gets? So I've been thinking about sending Ghost away, or maybe just locking him up will do?

[Cut to Olly nodding and sharpening a knife]

InstaFriend 1: Fuck's sake Jon...

LOLOLOL  The Olly Nodding made it perfect.  I appreciate InstaFriends trying to speak up for Ghost as well, HA!!!

Do you think the InstaFriends were all jealous of everyone else because they were like Jon's 11th through 16th best friends? But lately they've been able to move up a few rungs on the ladder, which has brought out their confidence. Let's check out the chart to see how things have changed.

Jon's Ladder of Friends

1. Olly

2. Ygritte (Dead)

3. Sam

4. Ghost (In a timeout)

5. Aemon (Dead)

6. Tormund (Settled south of Wall)

7. Pyp (Dead)

8. Grenn (Dead)

9. Edd

10. Jeor (Dead)

11 - 16 InstaFriends 1 through 5

17. Davos

So you take out those that are bolded and InstaFriends move up to spots 4 through 8. So just by hanging out in the background, their stock has really risen.

Can we call it Jon's Ladder O' Friends?

Really, those scripts must be priceless.  I wonder if they are so heavy handed that The Olly Nod and Reaction Shot is in the script, or just scene notes?

I'm definitely with you on the JaimevsLarry teeth gnashing.  I think I'm foolishly  hoping for an emergence of Jaime in the RL, which is stupid on my part, HEH, and will result in catching up with you for the teeth nashing.  I'm trying to pace myself.

By the way, where's Drogon?  Hybernating?  Having his monthly?  Waiting for St. Tyrion to come riding up on a dragon and tell him what to do?  (I shouldn't even say that jokingly, should I?)  I've kind of put off my super kevetching about Dany alone in the Dothraki Sea and taken prisoner, instead of.......chowing down with Drogon and patting him on the back while the Dothraki are shitting their pants, I expect.

I really feel bad for the actor who plays Olly.  I know none of the anger is directed at him, but he is just a kid. I really hope he has a sense of humor about the situation.

Oh I think he does... He even mentioned Cheby's "ollynodsatthings" in an interview. He seems like a really sweet kid, I hope he gets loads of work with good parts. :)

I am happy for him he got the possibility to exercise his facial expressions? And yeah, he looks like a sweet kid, he also doesn't sing that bad :D and he is the reason why I sometimes feel guilty about hating Olly so much.

Hahahahaha, I was just curious if anyone caught on to that.  I remember my ex telling me he would see the ads in his comic books as a kid and give it a try. :lmao:
