At least he should have given Robb some warning, so he could be ready for the worst case senario. Ned should defently have taken renlys offer to help him arrest the children whilst the castle sleept. Arrest the bitch or leave KL, either would have been better than what he did, the naive good man. I don't think he NEEDED Cersei to run away, after all him and Robert went way back and were so close that I don't believe Robert would have taken it as lies if he heard it from Ned's mouth. Plus, he must have at least once wondered why none of the kids look anything like him. He just should have gathered Balon Swann and whoever else he could to protect him.
