NOTE:

The original thread for this topic can be found here.

So for those of you haven't seen the old thread, this thread is effectively a quick-view guide that shows the episode breakdown of all major characters that appear in Game of Thrones. Initially, this just measured series regulars but I later decided to expand the list to include non-starring cast members (as well as animals/uncredited babies too) that have appeared in three or more episodes of the show. I will update the list every week during each season to show the number of episodes each character appears in accurately.

Why do I do this? Eh, it's just fun to keep track and make note of what characters the showrunners feel the need to drop in on every week. I do understand that screentime is more important in measuring a character's importance but I do not have the time to measure that every week. Still it's fun to see what characters are "in the lead" in terms of episode count, both in terms of overall main cast (Tyrion, Cersei, Dany, Jon, Arya, Sansa and Jorah are in nearly every episode) and supporting characters by the region their characters come from or are associated with.

Without further ado...see the constantly changing list below.

This is a ranking of starring and guest cast members by number of episodes they have appeared in, as of Season 7, Episode 7: "The Dragon and the Wolf". At this time, 67 episodes have aired.

Season 1; Season 2; Season 3; Season 4; Season 5; Season 6; Season 7

* Indicates that they were guest cast in this season before being promoted to series regular.

Characters with a strikethrough indicates that the character has been killed onscreen and is unlikely to return. Characters that are italicised indicates that there are indications, dialogue or implications that the character is potentially dead but we haven't seen it happen onscreen.

Characters played by more than one actor will have coloured text that matches the season(s) they portrayed that character.

Note: Actors are only credited for new appearances. Archive footage or archive recordings are not counted as new appearances, such as the case with archive footage and recordings of Ned used in Bran's green dreams.

Some sources may also count appearances from extras as having played certain characters. While external information or commentary may state or imply that an extra is playing a character (such as Selyse, Jaqen, Rickard Karstark etc.), these appearances are not counted unless the actor has significant dialogue and is stated to be that character onscreen.

While external information has stated that extras have played Selyse, Jaqen, Biter, Rorge and Rickard Karstark onscreen, these actors were never named onscreen as those characters and so their appearances will not be counted in this list. The characters appearances are only counted when the actor is established onscreen as being that character, as is the case with Tara Fitzgerald, Tom Wlaschiha, Gerard Jordan, Andy Beckwith and John Stahl in those respective roles. While David Scott only had a bit appearance as Beric Dondarrion before being recast with Richard Dormer in Season 3, Scott's appearance is counted because he is explicitly referred to as Beric onscreen in Season 1. This also applies to Ian Whyte explicitly being referred to as Gregor in Season 2, who seemed to be only standing in after Conan Stevens finished in the role in Season 1 and Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson took over in Season 4.

Actors with the same number of episodes will be listed alphabetically by surname.

Thanks Taylor Swift! Always great to get a glowing endorsement from of an international music superstar!

Time for a post on how Episode 6x01: 'The Red Woman' shook up the pieces in terms of character appearances.

Season 6, Episode 1: 'The Red Woman' Update:

The Main Characters in the Top 10 in terms of episode count are as follows:

  1. Tyrion Lannister - 47/51 episodes
  2. Cersei Lannister - 45/51 episodes
  3. Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow - 42/51 episodes
  4. Sansa Stark - 41/51 episodes
  5. Jorah Mormont and Arya Stark - 40/51 episodes
  6. Jaime Lannister - 36/51 episodes
  7. Samwell Tarly - 35/51 episodes
  8. Theon Greyjoy - 33/51 episodes
  9. Petyr Baelish - 30/51 episodes
  10. Varys - 29/51 episodes
  • From the above Top 10 list, 10 out of 12 cast members have been series regulars for all six aired seasons of Game of Thrones. Only John Bradley's Sam and Conleth Hill's Varys became series regulars after the first season. However, both actors and their respective characters appeared in several episodes of the first season. Interestingly Varys appeared in the most episodes in Season 1 before becoming a 'main character' in Season 2. It will be interesting to see if any prominent characters introduced in later seasons such as Margaery, Melisandre, Davos or Brienne will ever make it into the Top 10. Or can Bran get in there despite his Season 5 absence and omission from the Season 6 premiere too.

  • In terms of the Top 10, Peter Dinklage's Tyrion is the only character to appear in every episode of more than one season. Tyrion has a perfect tally in both Seasons 2 and 5. Can he repeat the same in Season 6? Season 4 was his weakest with a mere 8 episodes. The only other main characters to appear in every episode of a season are Lena Headey's Cersei and Jack Gleeson's Joffrey, both in Season 1.

  • Daenerys and Jon have the same number of episodes in reverse. Emilia Clarke's Daenerys appears in 9 episodes of the first season and 8 episodes each for the following four seasons. Kit Harrington's Jon appeared in 8 episodes each for the first four seasons and broke the trend in Season 5 with 9 episodes. Both characters appear in this Season 6 premiere although Harrington has a considerably easier job than Clarke. Will Dany and Jon be neck-and-neck for the rest of the series (no-one believes Jon is gone forever)!

  • Rounding of the rest of the Top 10, Sophie Turner's Sansa got something of the short shrift in Seasons 2 and 4 in terms of episode count (although I think viewers in general were happier with Sansa's screentime in the latter season) but has appeared in all but one episode of the other three completely aired seasons. Iain Glen's Jorah has the luck of being paired up with high ranking characters - Dany and Tyrion for the series run, elevating himself in the process. Maisie Williams' Arya was prominent throughout the first three seasons (only absent one episode per season) but her episode count dwindled with Seasons 4 and 5. Will we see a rise in episodes this season? Not according to Maisie Williams. In regards to the remaining Top 10, John Bradley's Sam might fare best having appeared in at least half the episodes of every aired complete season so far. Nikolaj Coster Waldau's Jaime is ahead of him for now but barely featured in episode count for Season 2 of the show. Likewise, Alfie Allen's Theon, Aidan Gillen's Littlefinger and Conleth Hill's Varys had episode droughts in Season 4, Season 3 and Season 5 respectively.

  • The only new addition to the main cast this episode is Jonathan Pryce's 'High Sparrow' - we'll keep an eye open for new additions in future episodes (Diana Rigg's Olenna has been listed as a series regular in promotional material for years now but has never been listed in credits as a starring cast member. Let's see if that changes this year). Out of the 43 main characters, the 'High Sparrow' jumps in at 42 with 6 episodes, ahead of poor Harry Llloyd's Viserys' paltry 5 episodes in Season 1 only.

  • Leaving the main cast this season is Stephen Dillane's Stannis who is confirmed by Roose to have been killed off. I know we didn't see Stannis die but I really don't see the show bringing the character back. It's a shame because Dillane's a great actor and Stannis (based on his book character) still had potential yet. However, considering the horrendous way in which Danny and Davey killed Shireen off, it really was hard to root or care for Stannis after that. Stannis ends his run with 24 episodes. Oh and Jon Snow is also dead and Kit Harrington is only playing a corpse for a couple of episodes. That's it guys, that's all. You have to believe them etc etc! Jon is the only PERMANENTLY DEAD character in the Top 10!

Now let's look at the Recurring Characters in the Top 10 in terms of episode count:

  1. Pycelle - 27/51 episodes
  2. Edd Tollett and Barristan Selmy - 25/51 episodes
  3. Podrick Payne - 23/51 episodes
  4. Grenn - 22/51 episodes
  5. Hodor - 21/51 episodes
  6. Loras Tyrell and Meryn Trant - 18/51 episodes
  7. Alliser ThorneGrey Worm and Ghost - 17/51 episodes
  8. OllyDrogon and Janos Slynt - 15/51 episodes
  9. OshaSummerLuwin and Ros - 14/51 episodes
  10. Viserion and Irri - 13/51 episodes
  • Julian Glover's Pycelle is the clear winner here in terms of recurring characters with high episode counts who were never made series regulars. And unlike Stannis, Selyse, Shireen, Myrcella, Barristan, Doran, Trystane, Grenn, Pyp, Mance, Meryn, Rakharo, Irri, Xaro and countless others who were killed prematurely; Pycelle has actually outlived his book counterpart. But for how much longer? Out of the Top 10 recurring characters, Pycelle and Finn Jones' Loras Tyrell are the only characters to appear in all six seasons (although both were absent from the season premiere).

  • Yes, in just two short seasons and an episode, Olly has cracked the Top 10! Yes, I know! It makes me mad too! Remember when fans hated Ros?! Man, it would make you miss those days. GoT will probably always be entertaining to me because it introduced me to the books and I genuinely do love the actors, the visuals, the battles and the occasional flashes of brilliance. But Danny and Davey are not great writers and the more they veer away from George's story (which has logic and themes as opposed to shallow depictions of #REVENGE! #SHOCKDEATHS! #EPICBATTLES! #SEXANDNUDITY! #BADASSERY!...the books have all that too but there's a time and a place for it), the more I'm going to develop a love/hate relationship with the show.

  • Out of the recurring cast, we're sadly saying goodbye to the three potentially most interesting Dornish players...Alexander Siddig's Doran, DeObia Operai's Areo Hotah and Toby Sebastian's Trystane (okay not so much on the last one). I don't want to go on a rant (I'll save that for another post) but this is the hackiest, most terrible PLOT TWIST they've pulled yet. What a waste of talent?! What a waste of character inclusion when not one of these characters were given a chance to develop?! Was this a response to the poor reception to last season's storyline? Danny and Davey, YOU IMPROVE, DON'T REMOVE! The lack of logic and the one-dimensional characterisation for all of the Dornish characters is heartbreaking, particularly as the most culturally distinct family don't get any of the shading that the other eight Great Houses get in the TV series (even the usurping houses of Bolton and Frey feel more realistic despite their evil intentions). Anyway of our departing characters, Hotah has the highest episode count with 6 episodes. To highlight the lack of distinction, both Doran and Trystane end with a package deal of 5 episodes each. The Sand Snakes are not dead but continue to be defined as three badass sociopathic sexy chicks with prowess in one weapon only: the spear, the whip and the double daggers (#HI-YAH! #GURLPOWER). Not surprisingly, they come as a package deal with 6 episodes each. Danny and Davey better not treat this as the end of Dorne in the show. I want to see this trainwreck play out to a hamfisted conclusion that at least tries to address their terrible plot decisions. With Indira Varma's Ellaria still being a series regular, I'm hoping the Dornish plotline gets at least 3 episodes this season.

Glad that this is back, was looking for this. As for screentime at least last season couple of people were counting that and lines on IMBb so maybe they will do that this year too.

But I must say that I would rather prefer if you tone down the show criticism. Of course you can state your opinion but I rather would not want hate.

Amazing thread.

Also a nice counter-argument to the myth that none of the characters are safe and everyone dies all the time. The guest list features a lot of dead characters which bolster this illusion but the vast majority of the series regulars are all alive. In the Top 20 only 4 are dead.

Yes, apologies about my rant! I didn't mean for it to go on and be so caps-locky. I definitely have my issues with the writing on the show and feel its becoming progressively worse. That being said, this is a thread about the frequency of character appearances so it's not really the place to nitpick and grumble about the things I dislike. I'll definitely share my opinions about characters appearances, debuts and departures but I'll keep it to one or two lines. Of course, the top post which is updated for every episode will always remain neutral and fact-based. I'm not hating - it's an overused word. If I hated the show, I'd stop watching. But there's enough positives to keep me watching to the bitter end despite some very large frustrations that I sometimes to need vent. But I'll unleash those in other posts.

On to the update post for this week's episode - Season 6, Episode 2: 'Home' Update:

NEW ADDITIONS:

So we have THREE new additions to the guest cast list. Richard Rycroft makes his fourth appearance as Maester Wolkan this week, meaning that he really should have been added to the list last week. However, I failed to notice him in Season 5 when he appeared in the episodes 'High Sparrow' (5x03) and 'Hardhome' (5x08) presumably in a non-speaking role. However, he's getting a chance to act this season, looking appropriately terrified of the new Lord Bolton and his rein in last week's episode and this week. For those of you - even book readers - wondering who Wolkan is, he's the maester to the Boltons at Winterfell. He's an original character in the show.

The next new addition to the list is 'Old' Nan played by Annette Tierney in this episode but previously by the late great Margaret John in two episodes of Season 1. As John passed away before the airing of the first season of Game of Thrones, I'm pretty sure the showrunners have quietly let the character die off screen in between Season 1 and 2, hence why I've marked the character as deceased. Still, it was cool getting to see the character back on screen again for nostalgia purposes and to see her make the list. Nan feels like a much more important character than some on the list, thanks to such a strong performance and her important part in Winterfell's likeability.

Our third new entry is WUN WUN  who makes his third appearance with this episode (apologies about the caps) after appearing twice in Season 5! Wun Wun is played by the long-serving Ian Whyte who has also appeared as a White Walker and Gregor Clegane for Season 2 before recasting him with Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson.

DEPARTURES:

So Season 6 loses its first series regular as we say goodbye to Michael McElhatton's Roose Bolton. So I said I would remain calm but I'm not entirely happy with this death. Roose was by the far more interesting and dynamic Bolton villain and losing him this early in the season is hugely disappointing. Plus his death was very reminiscent of Doran Martell's majorly mishandled death. Now Roose was always going to be a goner and as this is probably set up for Ramsay's downfall towards the end of season but it's a pretty anti-climactic death for the man who delivered that striking blow to Robb Stark. Roose finishes his run with a respectable 19 episodes, appearing in all but the first season.

We also lose Elizabeth Webster as 'Fat' Walda Frey. This death was inevitable ever since she happily proclaimed that she was with-child. Webster did a really good job in a short run of episodes at making Walda a sympathetic and kindly character. It's nice to see that not all Freys are monsters and depicting Walda this way is a nice change of pace for the show which often lacks the subtlety of the books. Walda finishes with 5 episodes spread across Seasons 4, 5 and 6.

Patrick Malahide's Balon Greyjoy also bites the dust this episode with four total episodes spread over Seasons 2, 3 and 6. Balon's death is long overdue although it is sad to say goodbye to Malahide who had so much presence in his limited screentime on the show. It's a shame the show left him offscreen for nearly 3 years. I do have a lot of sympathy for the writers in choosing how to adapt such a massive series as A Song of Ice and Fire but I really wish they planned further ahead so there weren't so many dangling plotlines that result in characters being killed off in a way that feels very premature. Plus this is the third stabbing between two family members. The writers just seem too gung-ho happy when it comes to kinslaying these last two episodes but don't have much inspiration when it comes to the methods used.

Finally, Nell Tiger Free cameos as the corpse of Myrcella Baratheon, probably making it the young princess's fourteenth and final appearance in the show. I'm pretty sad that this character is definitely dead - I would have enjoyed seeing her and Cersei interact more before she and Tommen are wiped off the face of Planetos.

CHANGES ARE COMING:

We're definitely going to see (and have seen) some new additions to the list from appearances in this episode. Pilou Asbæk makes his first appearance as Euron Greyjoy who should make the list by the end of Season 6. The actor seems charismatic but he's considerably younger than Malahide and I felt his definite involvement in Balon's death lacks any of the subtlety or intrigue. Nice to see Gemma Whelan back as Yara again, the first time since her one-off appearance in Season 4.

As mentioned, Old Nan finally makes the list after making her first appearance since Season 1. Also making new appearances since Season 1 are the much missed Ned and Benjen Stark. The taller boy training them sword combat was also a young Rodrik Cassel apparently so good to see him too (I thought it was Brandon). No, we don't get to see Sean Bean, Joseph Mawle and Ron Donachie return (yet) but it's nice to see Ned come on par with Talisa in terms of episode count.

Finally, Max von Sydow's Three Eyed Raven and Kae Alexander's Leaf are just one episode away from making the list. Both characters are recasts previously played by Struan Rodger and Octavia Alexandru.

MAIN CHARACTER TOP 10:

This week the same characters are still in the Top 10 but the positions have changed a little. With Dany and Jorah sitting out this episode and a strikethrough now removed from his name, Kit Harrington's Jon Snow pushes Emilia Clarke's Daenerys in fourth place where she is now tied with Sophie Turner's Sansa StarkMaisie Williams' Arya Stark jumps ahead to fifth place while Iain Glen's Jorah Mormont drops into sixth. Conleth Hill's Varys now shares joined tenth position with Aidan Gillen's Littlefinger who still hasn't appeared in Season 6, same as John Bradley's Sam.

  1. Tyrion Lannister - 48/52 episodes
  2. Cersei Lannister - 46/52 episodes
  3. Jon Snow - 43/52 episodes
  4. Daenerys Targaryen and Sansa Stark - 42/52 episodes
  5. Arya Stark - 41/52 episodes
  6. Jorah Mormont - 40/52 episodes
  7. Jaime Lannister - 37/52 episodes
  8. Samwell Tarly - 35/52 episodes
  9. Theon Greyjoy - 34/52 episodes
  10. Petyr Baelish and Varys - 30/51 episodes

RECURRING CHARACTER TOP 10:

Edd is closing in Pycelle to become the most featured guest character in the series. After his Season 5 absence, Hodor or *shudder* Willas (why writers why?) is no in fourth place with GrennThorne and Ghost are getting nice coverage while Grey Worm is practically the regular that isn't. All three of those join the still absent Loras and deceased Meryn at Number 6. Olly jumps ahead to seventh place while Myrcella and Rodrick's post-death appearances push them up into the Top 10.

  1. Pycelle - 27/52 episodes
  2. Edd Tollett  - 26/52 episodes
  3. Barristan Selmy - 25/52 episodes
  4. Podrick Payne - 24/52 episodes

The only reason I can think of is that they didn't want to cause confusion with the same name being used. In the books, his name is speculated as being Walder. Well, we already have Walder Frey. This isn't something new, as they've changed Robert Arryn's name to Robin, and Asha Greyjoy's name to Yara.

I just want to say one thing... Arya so far will be in the first three episodes. She had really short scenes the first two episodes and I am hoping that she will get around ten min screen time for episode three. When the theatre troupe comes into play they are speculated to be in three episodes right? Meaning that should be another three episodes for Arya. Then Arya has to escape and get to the Riverlands ( if this is true) at the end of the season. I am thinking Maisie meant less screen time than episode count, which I think is bull crap. Arya has to come into the picture more! Why are they dwindling her hats yet down when Arya is important?

Ok semi rant done. I know she is still in the top 10 but screen time wise? ...

They have so many storylines right now, that most of them are only getting one scene an episode. Bran returned to give us a Winterfell scene and Meera. For storylines we have.

  • Bran and co. with the Three-eyed crow
  • Arya training in Braavos
  • Dany going to Vaes Dothrak
  • Jorah and Daario falling her.
  • Tyrion and Varys ruling Mereen
  • Sam making his way to Oldtown
  • The Ironborn and the Kingsmoot
  • Cersie, Margaery, and Loras with the High Sparrow
  • Ellaria and the Sand Snakes revenge plot
  • Ramsay controlling Winterfell
  • Sansa escaping to Castle Black
  • Jon's after death plot
  • and a whole bunch of other sideplots and characters I haven't remembered.

I know some of these are intertwined right now, but time is needed to go to each little group of characters. Something that wasn't as big of an issue in the first season.

I hope I was not too critical in my comment about hate earlier, it is just I think there is a like some people gross and I like this wonderfull thread to remain pleasant to read.

I do not know how you can tell if Bowen Marsh and Othell Yarwick are in a episode or not, I have no idea what they look like and could have been in the yard with the rest of Night's Watchmen for all I know. Pity the actor who played Denys Mallister died mid shooting his scenes so we do lack recognisible Night's Watchmen (and naturally sad regarding the actor as well).

I wonder if the Child of the forest we saw this episode was the same character we saw in season 4. People call both Leaf but I do not think a name were mentioned neither time. I would personally rather belive they are differnt characters rather than a change of how the charcater looks. I guess this is more relevant if the charcater appears in next episode since that would be the 3rd time if it is the same character.

I know some of these are intertwined right now, but time is needed to go to each little group of characters. Something that wasn't as big of an issue in the first season.

I think some of these will condense quickly though. Dany, Jorah, Daario will probably become one scene group by mid-season. Sansa, Brienne and Pod are likely to make it Castle Black by the end of the episode (they should only be a day or two behind Mel given that they escaped during the battle with Stannis just a day or two after Mel abandoned him) thus putting Jon, Davos, Tormund, Mel, Sansa, Brienne, Pod and Edd all in the same location. While Brienne and Pod will break off, based on promos they'll probably intersect with Jaime and Bronn later in the scene (possibly the Hound and Arya as well).

Others I think are going to be pretty minor overall. Ellaria and the Sand Snakes I suspect will vanish until after the dust has settled between the Lannisters and the High Sparrow. Now that Roose and Walda are dead and Sansa and Theon have fled, I think Ramsey will take a break from the screen after Rickon is gifted to him because we don't need to see Reek 2.0 and he has no other major characters to interact with. Now that he's separated from Jon, I also suspect that Sam's story might drop back to 6-7 episodes or possibly even less.

For similar reasons to Ramsey I could see Tyrion missing an episode or between Varys leaving and Dany/Jorah returning as there's only so much he can do with Missy and Greyworm. I could also see Dany missing another episode once she's conquered the Dothraki and is on her way back to Mereen (which would put her at her usual 8/season). Jaime might miss an episode after he leaves King's Landing for the Riverlands or once he takes command but before Brienne/Pod arrive (similarly Brienne/Pod might lose an episode or two going from The Wall to the Riverlands). Just based on Maise's remarks, she's likely to miss at least one episode this year (probably after she regains her sight but before she's sent off to interact with the acting troupe).

If Sansa is going to miss an episode this season it will almost have to be the next one, because she's got a ton of stuff to do this season; arrive at Castle Black, have the first Stark reunion since season one, meet Davos and take him on as an advisor, sending Brienne on her quest to the Riverlands, departing Castle Black, rallying the Northern houses, meeting up with Littlefinger and the Vale army, the Battle of the Bastards and reclaiming Winterfell. If she arrives at Castle Black at the end of next episode though I think there's a solid chance Sansa ends up in all ten episodes this season because all of those things are pretty significant scenes and some practically require their own episodes to deal with.

If Jon is missing any episodes this season it will likely be after the Castle Black group splits up and Sansa/Davos goes to rally the Northern lords while he marches the Wildlings south towards Winterfell, but with Tormund and Mel likely at his side its every bit as likely that he ends up having something to do in every episode and gets his first 10 episode season.

The only other character I could easily see appearing in all ten episodes this season is Cersie, due to her being the central character of the King's Landing conflicts. Jaime and Brienne/Pod MIGHT be able to pull off a full ten episodes, but I really think they'll both lose at least an episode in travel because we've already seen Jaime/Bronn and Brienne/Pod as traveling companions so there's no new info to be gained by showing them in transit the way there was for Sansa/Brienne/Pod/Theon last episode.

The comment wasn't too critical. I don't want this to turn into a thread to flame the show either. I do think people should be allowed to express their opinions - positive or negative - and be respected but it is important we maintain self-control. The primary point of this topic is to track character appearances.

Bowen Marsh and Othell Yarwyck - they're the two guys who hanged alongside Alliser Thorne and Olly tonight so you should finally know who they are in death!

I'm pretty sure the Child of the Forest we seen in the Season 4 finale and the one we see in Season 6 are the same character and go by the name of Leaf. Promotional material says so. Now promotional material has also singled out extras playing Selyse in the S2 premiere; and Rickard Karstark, Jaqen, Rorge and Biter in the S1 finale. However, these appearances are not counted in the list because they were included more as Easter Eggs for the book fans and the characters weren't established truly until Tara Fitzgerald, John Stahl, Tom Wlaschiha, Andy Beckwith and Gerard Jordan were explicitly defined as those characters. Only the actor playing Rickard Karstark got a single line before Stahl took over the role but it was just an exclamation that could have come from any other Northern lord. Basically, the only way we know that character was Rickard Karstark was because of external sources. Meanwhile, David Scott who had one line as Beric Dondarrion in Season 1 before Richard Dormer took over the role in Season 3 is included on the list because he was explicitly referred to as Dondarrion. Leaf has not been named onscreen yet but the character as played by both actresses had significant dialogue and actions onscreen so that's why her appearances are counted. But I get how you would rather treat them as two separate characters. I hate recasts too and its one of the things that irks me about Game of Thrones.

Anyway, let's get right to it, here's the update for Season 6, Episode 3: "Oathbreaker".

NEW ADDITIONS:

The 'Three Eyed Raven' makes the list this week although he should have been on it years ago rightfully. The Three Eyed Raven is a complicated character to add to the list because technically he's appeared in Seasons 1 and 3 as a literal three eyed raven. I wasn't going to include these appearances as I see that raven as more of a symbolic manifestation leading Bran to his ultimate goal conjured by the actual man-form raven than the raven himself. Then I thought to myself that I do include other animals (the dragons, the direwolves) and dream characters so it's only fair that I include the actual raven too. The three eyed raven simply appears as a raven in 3 episodes of Season 1 and 2 episodes of Season 3. We hear his human voice as portrayed by Struan Rodger in Season 4, Episode 2: "The Lion and Rose" and see him physically in human-form in Season 4, Episode 10: "The Children", also portrayed by Rodger. Max von Sydow has taken other the role in Season 6.

Leaf also makes her third appearance with this episode. She was portrayed by Octavia Alexandru in the Season 4 finale and Kae Alexander in Season 6. As mentioned above, I'm not a fan of recasts or unexplained changes in appearance but I do like the new Child of the Forest makeup. It does give them a wild, distinctive and fantastical look, much more than the ashy child in the Season 4 finale.

It's not necessarily a new appearance but Ned Stark gets to add another episode to his tally after losing his head in Season 1. He has 12 episodes, the same amount as Jeor Mormont (James Cosmo). Granted, one of those appearances was just Sean Bean's likeness in the Season 1 finale but it still counts! Ned's second appearance in Season 6 sees him this time portrayed by Robert Aramayo. We should definitely be seeing him again. Let's hope we'll also see Sean Bean return for a surprise cameo this season.

DEPARTURES:

Bye bye, Alliser Thorne (Owen Teale)Olly (Brenock O'Connor), Othell Yarwyck (Brian Fortune) and Bowen Marsh (Michael Condron)! I'm not very sad to see you go. It actually looked like the show was going to improve upon an aspect of the book in making Thorne a more multi-faceted character than his book counterpart due to his begrudging heroics in Season 4, Episode 9: "The Watchers on the Wall". And while Teale mostly has tried to keep that dimension intact, the show is too fond of changing up characters' motivations for the sake of dramatic twists. While Olly could also have been a sympathetic character and a half-hearted attempt was made to portray him as such, the show wasted any sympathy by heavy-handedly including shots of Olly grimacing murderously at the camera even right up until his death. Marsh is a non-entity who had about three speaking lines in his two seasons on the show while Yarwyck was initially portrayed sympathetically in Seasons 1 and 4 before taking a murderous U-turn in the Season 5 finale. The characters end their watches with 19 episodes (Thorne), 17 episodes (Olly), 14 episodes (Yarwyck) and 10 episodes (Marsh).

The culling in The North doesn't end yet though. We also lose Shaggydog, the most upsetting death of the whole lot this episode. Now, there are theories out there that the Umbers are playing the Boltons, much like the Manderlys are in the books, and that the wolf head presented to Ramsay wasn't really Shaggydog. However, I sadly don't have that much faith in the writers. The books have cruel moments but there's absolutely a political and/or believable emotional reason why these things happen. Characters are grey. In the show, Ramsay is pure evuhl with evuhl followers like the Karstarks and the Umbers. It would make sense as to why the Karstarks would switch allegiances but the Umbers? Why would the Umbers betray the Starks? Where is the Stark loyalty? The Starks have been the ancestral rulers over The North for centuries and have generally been pretty fair rulers? And in the eyes of Seven Kingdoms residents, Jon Snow isn't a Stark - he's a treacherous bastard just like all other Snows. So why are the trueborn Starks being punished and sent off to an upjumped bastard like Ramsay? The world building continues to get progressively lazy and I'm tired of the writers picking and choosing obstacles whenever it suits them. That said, I did like the actor (Dean S. Jagger) who played Smalljon so hopefully we'll see him double cross Bolton as we all hope.

Oh and they killed Greatjon Umber offscreen. Makes sense as we only seen him portrayed by Clive Mantle in 3 episodes of Season 1.

NEW ARRIVALS TO THE LIST:

New to the list this week are:

  • Rupert Vansittart as 'Bronze' Yohn Royce: Yohn Royce makes his third appearance with this episode. We've previously seen him in "The Mountain and the Viper" (4x08) easily hoodwinked by Darth Sansa and "The Wars to Come" (5x01) where he had the outrageous politically incorrect line of "He swings a sword like a girl with palsy". You'll find him under The Vale section of Recurring Characters and Animals.

  • Joe Naufahu as Moro: Moro makes his third and final appearance tonight, having appeared in the first, second and fourth episodes of this season only. I'll talk more about him under Departures. Moro can be found under The Dothraki Sea section of Recurring Characters and Animals.

  • Enzo Cilenti as Yezzan zo Qaggaz: What's with all the tricky surnames this week? A slender and presumably quite healthy Yezzan (a far cry from the Yellow Whale in the books) makes his third appearance this week. He previously appeared in "The Gift" (5x07) and "Hardhome" (5x08). While Yezzan is Yunkish in the books, he is said to be representing Astapor in this episode (but pointedly not specifically stated to be from Astapor). While I generally just sort recurring characters and animals by their origin in the books (unless contradicted in the show), I will put recurring characters whose origin is unclear under the region they are introduced. For this reason, you'll find Yezzan's episodes recorded under the Meereen section in Recurring Characters and Animals.

STRIKING THEM OFF THE LIST:

Not literally of course - it's just a strikethrough:

  • Joe Naufahu as MoroAs soon as he makes the list, he's struck off it! Moro is one of only two characters definitively killed off by just as they make the list. I'm not familiar with Naufahu as an actor although I know people were excited about his casting this season because people enjoyed him in Spartacus. It seemed like they were going to make Moro more than a just one-dimensional character when he appeared in the Season 6 premiere but it looks like those plans fell by the wayside. Moro is little more than a background character in 6x02 and in this episode, he was downgraded to being a sexist khal threatening Dany with rape, despite vouching for her previously. *sigh* I feel the writers are blowing their loads too early (I don't mean it that way - get your mind out of the gutter) by killing off so many characters in quick succession.

The show had a chance to show us a Dothraki perspective or introduce ones with more shades than barbarians who love to violently take everyone and everything and it failed. Instead, it went for a heavy-handed message of Dany stands up against the patriarchy and an emotionally manipulative callback to the Season 1 finale and Season 3's conquer of Astapor. On a superficial level, I loved seeing Dany take action and have her use her flameproof powers (which are limitless in the show as opposed to the books). But I felt this was pandering to all the critics who attack the show for sexism. Yes, Game of Thrones has many powerful women which is cool. However, alongside that, it's always had issues with sexism that its failed to address. I'm also fairly sure that the Dothraki will go back to being background now that Dany's little excursion is done when they had a chance to show us more than just the primitive aspects of the culture. Maybe I'll be wrong. And to play devil's advocate, maybe the show just won't have enough time to focus on so many characters.

  • Natalia Tena as OshaNow this I didn't like! Osha disappears for three seasons and we bring her back to give her a clumsy death by stabbing (if you're going to kill so many characters in quick succession, please don't use the same method everytime - also see Jon, Areo, Doran, Roose, Balon). It's disrespectful to the Stark storyline and it's disrespectful to Natalia Tena, who was so impressive that she was one of the few actors that influenced George R.R. Martin's interpretation of the character. Tena was also enthusiastic about the role and with Martin planning on giving her a greater role in future books, this feels premature. Again, maybe I'm jumping the gun and this will all make sense at the end of Season 6 (and whenever Winds of Winter is released) but I'm really numb to all the premature deaths at this point. At this rate, the only characters that will be left by Season 7 are the middle Starks siblings, the Lannister siblings, Daenerys and maybe Brienne, Davos and Melisandre. I just want to say that I'm not happy with the rumoured decision of shorter Seasons 7 and 8. Game of Thrones deserves 80 episodes to cover its complexity. It seems that Benioff and Weiss are just sort of fed up with the show at this point. Anyway, Osha finishes her run as the ninth most featured recurring character in the show to this point at 16 episodes out of 54. With Osha dead, the only human recurring character alive introduced or from North of The Wall is Baby Sam. Everyone else is a White Walker, Child of the Forest, Giant or Tree Person (okay the last one is debatable in terms of humanity).

I'm assuming you meant another character? Davos?

  • 2 weeks later...

Seeing as I missed last week's update, I'm just going to double up for this week:

MAIN CHARACTERS TOP 10:

Season 4, Episode 5: "The Door"

  1. Tyrion Lannister - 51/55 episodes
  2. Cersei Lannister - 48/55 episodes
  3. Jon Snow - 46/55 episodes
  4. Daenerys Targaryen - 45/55 episodes
  5. Sansa Stark - 44/55 episodes
  6. Arya Stark - 43/55 episodes
  7. Jorah Mormont - 42/55 episodes
  8. Jaime Lannister - 39/55 episodes
  9. Theon Greyjoy and Samwell Tarly - 36/55 episodes
  10. Varys - 33/55 episodes

Season 4, Episode 6: "Blood of my Blood"

  1. Tyrion Lannister - 51/56 episodes
  2. Cersei Lannister - 49/56 episodes
  3. Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow - 46/56 episodes
  4. Sansa Stark and Arya Stark - 44/56 episodes
  5. Jorah Mormont - 42/56 episodes
  6. Jaime Lannister - 40/56 episodes
  7. Samwell Tarly - 37/56 episodes
  8. Theon Greyjoy - 36/56 episodes
  9. Varys - 33/56 episodes
  10. Petyr Baelish - 32/56 episodes

King's Landing sat out "The Door" meaning Cersei and Jaime sat out Season 6 for the first time. They returned in "Blood of my Blood" but that episode was fairly light on main cast with only 12 of the 27 main characters for Season 6 appearing. In "Blood of my Blood", it was the first episode in Season 6 without Tyrion and Jon. Going by this, no main character will have a perfect run of episodes this season.

The Top 10 also gets a bit of a switch up with Dany and Jon now being even again in episode count as are Sansa and Arya, as of "Blood of my Blood". For a while, Jon and Sansa were just one step ahead of their aunt and younger sister respectively. Sam also jumps ahead of Theon after the two being head to head during "The Door". With "Blood of my Blood", Varys moves up to number 9 while crafty ole Littlefinger sneaks his way into the Top 10.

RECURRING CHARACTERS AND ANIMALS TOP 10:

Season 4, Episode 5: "The Door"

  1. Pycelle and Edd Tollett - 29/55 episodes
  2. Podrick Payne  - 26/55 episodes
  3. Barristan Selmy - 25/55 episodes
  4. Hodor - 23/55 episodes
  5. Grenn - 22/55 episodes
  6. Grey Worm - 21/55 episodes
  7. Loras Tyrell, Ghost and Alliser Thorne - 19/55 episodes
  8. Meryn Trant - 18/55 episodes
  9. Olly - 17/55 episodes
  10. Osha - 16/55 episodes

Season 4, Episode 6: "Blood of my Blood"

  1. Pycelle and Edd Tollett - 29/56 episodes
  2. Podrick Payne  - 26/56 episodes
  3. Barristan Selmy - 25/56 episodes
  4. Hodor - 23/56 episodes
  5. Grenn - 22/56 episodes
  6. Grey Worm - 21/56 episodes
  7. Loras Tyrell, Ghost and Alliser Thorne - 19/56 episodes
  8. Meryn Trant - 18/56 episodes
  9. Olly - 17/56 episodes
  10. Drogon and Osha - 16/55 episodes

When it comes to recurring characters and animals, Pycelle and Edd are now tied as the top recurring character in Game of Thrones with 29 episodes each as of "The Door". Both characters sat out "Blood of my Blood" as did most of the Top 10 from the previous week (to be fair half the Top 10 recurring characters are dead). Only Drogon upset things by joining the late Osha in tenth place.

NEW ADDITIONS AND DEPARTURES:

"The Door" had no new additions to the list but plenty of departures *sniff*. Enough has been said about "Hold the door" (Hodor), a death I actually found quite effective. Fareplay to both Kristian Nairn and Sam Coleman for playing poor tragic Hodor. Nairn, there since Season 1 and the basis for so many "first!" comments on GOT online materials for his loveable, will be missed in particular. Leaf's death was fairly cliché but I applaud the make-up artists for their work on the Children and a round of applause for Kae Alexander for her endurance of 10 hours in makeup for the shoot. I really hope all the Children weren't actually wiped out by the wights and white walkers because I dislike the idea of the entire species being wiped out after so little screentime.

I was mighty pissed off about Summer's death and the lack of reaction from Bran towards both Summer and Hodor's death in "Blood of my Blood". THE DIREWOLVES ARE IMPORTANT and shouldn't be sacrificed so nonchalantly. I was also annoyed by Max von Sydow's Three Eyed Raven's death. What is the point on wasting such talented actors like von Sydow, Alexander Siddig, Toby SebastianDeObia OpareiNell Tiger Free, Ciaran Hinds and Natalia Tena when you're going to kill them so abruptly?! The same seems to apply to Indira VarmaKeisha Castle-HughesJessica Henwick and Rosabell Laurenti Saunders who seem to have been indiscriminately written out of the show after the Season 6 premiere. And yes - I do think Varma and the Sand Fakes are fine actresses with plenty of charisma. The terrible dialogue and bratty attitudes that their characters are given though are difficult for any actress to sell. Vladimir Furdik also takes over from Richard Brake as the Night's King. We briefly see Furdik in human form before Leaf drives obsidian into his heart.

On the bright side, "Blood of my Blood" didn't kill anyone off, something I'm happy about as I feel Season 6 is too trigger happy, even for Game of Thrones. On the opposite end of the scale, we had two new additions to the list in the Riverlands section of Recurring Characters and Animals. Tim Piester reprises his role as Black Walder Rivers, killer of Catelyn Stark while Daniel Tuite takes over from Tom Brooke as Lame Lothar Frey, the murderer of Talisa and her unborn child. We also get to welcome back many old faces such as Joseph Mawle's Benjen StarkDrogonTobias Menzies' Edmure Tully and David Bradley's Walder Frey. Other significant faces this week include the Tarly family but its unknown if they'll appear in three episodes to make the list. We'll see over the coming four weeks, I guss!

When you're casting a part, no matter how small, you pick the best actor/actress for the job. All the people you listed added something special to the show, my personal favorites being Ciaran Hinds, Max von Sydrow, and Natalie Tena. All of their scenes were golden,  and I wouldn't consider any of them a waste.

I think the "waste" referred to them being so wonderful actors and having quick deaths/bad scenes. They did a perfect job with what they had; but they could have done a better one with more hours or different storyline.
