Down The Eagel by Manda Scott

Exotic names, too long to recall and fragmented battle scenes do not make a story.

I also suspect Manda is really a guy writing under a psuedo name, while not the absolute worst I have ever read, this is truly a waste of anyone's time.

Please avoid it.

Poor reads have become more rare of late (since I've become more selective in my reading), but Ravenheart by David Gemmel (and all respect to the author, since he passed away not too long ago) was a poor read, in my opinion.

Rushed romance, mostly flat characters, "boy from the oppressed city goes out, finds his True People, becomes a noble Robin Hood-like figure" type of deal. It had some good elements, but I really couldn't finish it.

Well, seeing as I've been living off Malazan and Westeros reccomendations for the last 6 months, there haven't been many poor reads...but I couldn't get into KJ Parker's Shadow. It might just have been my state of mind at the time. I slogged through it but didn't enjoy it very much.

Apart from that, probably Eldest by Christopher Paolini.

Odalisque by Fiona McIntosh. Pure indulgent ineptly-written crap, from the almost non-existent world building to the characters, who were all either evil caricatures or utterly perfect Mary Sues/Marty Stus. And the prose! *shudder* I got through the whole thing eventually, but it was painful and drawn-out and I'm never reading another thing by this author ever again.

cell by stephen king. i didn't heed the warning and started it anyway and since i can't seem to put a book down unfinished...i would really, realllly like to have the time invested back.

I've been wanting to read it but I haven't heard anything about it from other readers. What are the warnings you've heard/would give now that you finished?

Edit: Just the fact that he's publishing romance novels now should tell me enough about the quality of his more recent work. I've pretty much hated everything I read since Dreamcatcher.

Just finished a very dissapointing Forty Signs of Rain by Kim Stanley Robinson . Wierd , because a) doesn.t happen often , B) I have really enjoyed other books by this author and c) this book was given to me to read by someone who really knows their business . Oh well . Maybe I will give it another go in the furure , I have been in a pissy mood recently . Probably a really great read if you have a degree in climate change , but f*£!^~g wordy for the layperson . Totally obscured the narrative for me . :(

This from the girl that reads Chaucer , Shakespeare , Irvin Welsh , Beowulf (in Anglo Saxon ) and other stuff which is not that linguistically straight forward .

Alastair reynolds Revelation space, cool ideas but totally flat and boring characters.

First book in conclave of shadows by Feist. I dunno, after going to assassin scholl with Fitz, this seemed quite poor, though I loved his earlier stuff.

Mogdliani scandal by Follet, one of his early works with way too many characters, but love his later stuff.

Reading Lions of Al_Rassan now which is really quite excellent the further you get :)

The worst fiction I recently read was Astra and Flondrix by Seamus Cullen. It is a sort of soft-core porn fantasy novel, featuring male Elves who normally look sexless but develop two long penises when aroused, and Dwarfs who have incredibly long metallic corkscrew penises, along with the male Dwarfs laying eggs which the females then incubate. It was even worse than that sounds. :P

I don't think I've had any really bad reads recently, but I would like to know why people feel obliged to keep going when the book is awful. Why don't you just skip to the end to find out what happened and move on to something better?

Looks like this author had a dire need to get laid. Are you serious? Well, at least we've got to give him (or her?) credit for a prolific imagination...Should try the porn-movies industry. ;)

Edit: I forgot to respond to the main topic...!

Most recent poor read: Violin by Anne Rice. Insipid. Boring. Trash.

I guess I'm hoping it will get better... But if I get to the middle of it and it's still bad I do skip to the end and skim the pages for some major happening. Which is what I've done for all Anne Rice's books published after The Queen of the Damned, and yes for The Lies of Locke Lamora too.

SPOILER: TLLL
When Nazca was returned dead in horse piss, I was upset but I kept on reading 'cause the book was very good. But when the Sanza brothers were murdered, I was DEVASTATED and couldn't get myself to read the rest of the book.
