I don't recall there being rumors about Gendry's father.

Khal BlackfyreO's point was likely that the Baratheon line was from the beginning founded by a bastard of the Targs. So it is somewhat ironic that a bastard appears to be the last heir to the House remaining at this point, and possibly historically fitting that a bastard inherits.

Yep Rhoynestar, that's the point, and while Lord Lyman has his point as well, although the circumstances are quite different, the facts of the matter line up quite nicely.
