It's implied throughout the books the Lannisters are the richest

Yes, the Lannisters do imply often throughout the book that they are the wealthiest family in Westeros. It is also clear that the Hightowers are very close in wealth. You can make the Lannisters number one if you want to. It would be really hard to prove which is the wealthiest since GRRM only gives fuzzy information. However, I think it would be a mistake to think the Lannisters are so far above all other households.

Different topic. I saw someone imply the Hightowers are agriculturalists. Nope, they are the House in charge of the oldest, largest city in Westeros. They get their wealth through transporation and trade. You should be thinking of the Hightowers as more like New York banksters here.

Sure they can. How do you figure some notable nobles were richer than some Kings of England if being King automatically made your richer than all your subjects?

The Lannisters, Hightowers and Tyrells would all be, on average, wealthier than the Targaryens in the last 300 years (with the odd exception).

You mean the author.

The Reach is the second largest domain (after the north), and the most populous and fertile as well. The westerlands are the richest, with all the gold and silver in those hills.

The Lannisters as the rulers of the Richest realm, as well as the mines of Casterly Rock and the third largest city would easily be the richest House in the realm.

The Hightowers may easily be the second, but it seems pretty clear which House is usually on top.

From the worldbook:

The phrasing of this sentence does, as bent branch says, weakly imply that the Hightowers are in some sense richer than the Lannisters, else listing them after house Lannister would provide no new information.

What kind of logic is that? This is very basic, lists tend to go from the strongest to the weakest, if there is any order at all. The Lannisters being listed first and the Hightowers second either has them both equal or the Hightowers behind the Lannisters.

I don't think westerosi taxation is that intensive
