Really? I don't find that comforting at all. I don't find the thought of any human being having that kind of power comforting at all. I would much rather live with the conviction that the universe/fate/God likes to punch us in the face from time to time and that the human race will never not have some general maliciousness. While I disagree with the sentiment, I think this is actually a major factor behind conspiracy theorists. They fear the idea that people aren't in control, or they their own views aren't popular, or that they aren't proficient, so they invent or adopt conspiracies to blame instead.
