Yeah. Heat might be my all time favorite heist film. Also, another one of Cruise's memorable performances was that producer role in tropic thunder.

Heat might also have been one of the last movies were Pacino and De Niro gave a damn

De Niro did some good stuff after Heat. Casino, Jackie Brown, Ronin, Silver Linings Playbook.

Pacino has done a few as well. Donnie Brasco, The Devils Advocate (not a great movie but I liked AL in it), The Insider. And some good TV movies.

Hopefully The Irishman will be a return to greatness for both of them though. Those two together in a film directed by Scorsese has me pretty hopeful.

Watched Flight at the weekend. I had imagined it was going to be more... procedural or political or something. I thought (hoped) it was going to be less about one person's struggle with alcohol abuse. Had I known that I might have given it a swerve as it was a bit too triggering for me tbh. I guess if alcohol abuse doesn't generate very strong feelings in you then you might be able to enjoy the story a little more.

It has been a while since I had something really good to write about, but I just saw a delightful little film in theatre that I absolutely have to recommend to you all. François Ozon's latest film Frantz was much better than I expected. From the trailer, I thought I was going to see a scrumptiously shot film with a rather cliche story.

It turns out that I was right about the scrumptiously shot part. The film looks gorgeous. The black and white is lovely, the way it clings to the faces of the actors, just perfection! It really fits the subdued mood of the story. And the moments were we suddenly get to see a splash of colour, they provoke real emotion. That was done very well.

I was also pleasantly surprised by the story. Parts of it did indeed turn out just as I predicted based on the trailer, but Ozon handled those with a certain emotional maturity that you usually don't get in mainstream cinema. I'm glad that he did it the way he did, because the story demanded to be told with this sort of respect. I would definitely recommend Frantz to all the romantic souls out there.

Even better than the cinematography, the tone and the emotional maturity was the excellent cast of actors. None of which were really famous from something else as far as I can tell. However, that won't take very long. Pierre Niney and Paula Beer are two great new actors and I think they could do really well in the future. Especially Paula Beer, I was shocked to learn that she was younger than me, but she carries herself so well in this film, with such great dignity you don't often see in someone so young. If she wants to and her English is good, I wouldn't be surprised if she became an absolute A-list actor.

So for all those among you who are looking for a beautiful little film to wash away the foul taste of 2016's extremely poor summer blockbuster season, this is something for you :)

Doing a rewatch of The Shield.  Wrapping up season three.  Such an amazing show.  The first season's a bit weak but it really ramps up in season two, and four and five are two of the best individual seasons of television I've ever seen.  It's also got the best finale.  Damn near perfect ending.

I'd rank the show overall as second only to The Wire.

Spoiler

I'm watching Lem burn the money right now.  One of the best moments on the show.

Went to see Captain Fantastic last night. Viggo was marvellous, obviously. The grieving mother/widow is a stereotypical Hollywood trope. It's less frequent that you get to see the grieving father/widower. It's a quiet little film, really. There are some great moments with the kids and it didn't end quite as sadly as I expected it to... but you can probably wait for the DVD. :)

Has anyone watched Tale of Tales yet??

Yes. Totally worth a watch.

ETA: I  just confused that with Wild Tales, but I have seen Tale of Tales and stand by my original statement. Watch both movies, actually. They're pretty crazy but in good ways. The wedding tale in Wild Tales is pure insanity.

Yes! A little bit of it was shown during a general trailer (either for the cinema or a production company) when I went to see Captain Fantastic the other day and I was thinking, bloody hell, that was a hilarious wedding scene. :)

Wild Tales was so good.  The theater I saw it in was packed with retirees.  I thought they were going to hate it but they loved it! It was actually one of the best theatrical experiences I've had.  Everyone was totally in sync with the move.

The reason I love Kick Ass quite as much as I do is because not only is it a brilliant movie but when I first went to see it in cinema the theatre was absolutely PACKED and everyone LOVED it...the atmosphere was honestly one of the best things ever. I loved it.

Watched The Straight Story with the lads yesterday.

The worst I can say about the movie is that not a lot happens, but honestly, I don't mind. The movie is beautiful, incredibly touching, definitively part of the "plight of the elderly" sub-genre of tearjerkers, along with movies like Tokyo Story or more recently Amour. Definitively not Lynch's best, but that doesn't say much considering most of his pictures are masterpieces in my opinion.

Was really glad to see Sissy Spacek in something else than Carrie too, I really enjoy her acting and her Southern drawl.

It's a comfy movie that I'd recommend on a rainy afternoon, but it's a bit slow for a movie night.

EDIT: If I had to compare the movie with another one, I'd say it's a bit like a less conflict-driven Nebraska.

I just watched the movie "The Rebound" on Netflix. It was my second time watching it, but the first was like 4 years ago, forgot about it then saw it suggested again. I'm not much of a Rom/com guy but this movie puts a smile on my face from beginning to end. Also not a big Catherine Zeta Jones fan but this movie makes me love her.

I loved it. I mentioned it in this thread at the time - can't recall exactly what I wrote then. I'd loved the girl who became heroine of her own story - 'you might recognise me because I AM THE PRINCESS'. :)

Watched the documentary, Who Took Johnny? on Netflix. Sad and disturbing stuff. This one will stay with me for a while.

I almost watched that a few times, will check it out soon. Speaking of depressing documentaries on Netflix, ever see "Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father"? That one takes the cake for me. It's really sad and downright infuriating, but worth a view. Watch with tissues.

I took my niece to see "Kubo and the Two Strings" today and it was great. Thumbs up from the both of us.
