Saw a clickbait article yesterday that quoted Jay Glazer as saying that the Niners are looking to cut Kaepernick. Made mention of the fact that he has wasted away while rehabbing from surgery and he now no longer seems to have the size and speed that made him so dangerous for so short a period of time. I don't know that it's true they are looking to cut him, but $17 mill is an awful lot for a third string QB...

He looked really slight to me, and seemed to lack explosion the couple of times he did take off running. Couple that with his lousy instincts and inability to read defenses, and I have to agree with you. I can't see paying the guy his current rate if he's not going to at least push Gabbert for the starting job. Doesn't look like that's going to happen anytime soon. I typed up my response to you while grabbing a quick bite for lunch. On the way back, Russillo and Kannel were talking with Mark Dominick about the situation and he basically made it sound like a foregone conclusion that Kaep would be cut. He talked in terms of making a "football decision" and making sure that the Yorks are on board with paying him $12 million to go away. He also addressed the fact that if you cut him now, everyone will assume its because of the flag stance but in his words "what's one more drop when you're already wet" in reference to the shit show that has been the Niners since the beginning of Harbaugh's contract year. At this point, I think you have to just roll with Blaine Gabbert and Christian Ponder (I can't believe I really typed that... ) and don't screw up like last year and win games against the likes of Minnesota and Cleveland. Go full on tank and grab Deshaun Watson and hope for the best.
Rhom
Interesting development... Gabbert will sit for Thursday's pre-season game. Quote Chip Kelly met with the media on Tuesday, and he clarified the quarterback position for this Thursday’s preseason finale. He said that while the practice reps remain split in practice, Blaine Gabbert will not play Thursday against the San Diego Chargers. Kelly said the reason is that they want to get Colin Kaepernick more snaps due to his absence the first two games. He pointed to Gabbert having 43 snaps thus far, while Kaepernick has 13. Kelly would not declare a starter for Week 1, but it is at least interesting that Gabbert is sitting. Week 4 is when a lot of starters don’t play. The snap disparity is certainly something of note, and that is one of the reasons Gabbert is likely to be starting when Week 1 rolls around. Get him out there, let the world see he's terrible... Then cut him. I don't know if Baalke will do it, but I think its the right move.

Yes, more than Aaron Hernandez, more than Ray Rice, more than...well, any of the various felons and abusers who have happened to the league in the past decade and a half. Cites NFL sources calling him a 'traitor', saying they'd resign before having him on the team, saying 'fuck that guy',etc. That's not weird at all. edit: if you're interested in an outside perspective on this, this Canadian article sums it up pretty well: http://www.sportsnet.ca/football/nfl/backlash-colin-kaepernick-familiar/

Maithanet
I cannot believe that Shaun Hill is still in the league. Backup quarterbacks have incredible staying power. It looks like an NFC playoff spot just opened up. That sucks for Bridgewater, I always liked the guy. Hope he can make a full recovery for 2017. Yeah, I've read reports that players were throwing up after witnessing it, and I guess Zimmer teared up during the press conference. The whole thing sounded horrific. I like Teddy too. I hope the prognosis is better than it sounds.

Incidentally, I just found this update from Ian Rapoport on the "vomiting" thing he said. Quote UPDATE, 7:30 p.m.: Soooo, did players actually vomit after seeing Bridgewater's injury? Rapoport now says no: Follow Ian Rapoport ✔@RapSheet I said this. But what I meant was they were noticeably affected. Regrettably, it was not meant literally. https://twitter.com/chriswesseling/status/770742274930069505 … 6:11 PM - 30 Aug 2016 146146 Retweets 230230 likes ETA: spelling Rapoport

Yeah, it amazes me that we haven't gone out and gotten a competent backup. That said, I doubt he starts more than 2 or 3 games. And I wouldn't completely write us off. Last year we made it to the playoffs with the least used QB in the NFL. There aren't a ton of options to replace Teddy, but I don't see why we can't make a playoff run with someone like Geno as our starter (*shutters at the thought that it's come to this*). 35 minutes ago, Manhole Eunuchsbane said: Yeah, I've read reports that players were throwing up after witnessing it, and I guess Zimmer teared up during the press conference. The hospital I work at specializes in sports injuries, so I have a half way decent understanding of the recovery period. It will take roughly a year to recover, assuming nothing goes wrong, and then another 3 to 6 months to rehab. So in all likelihood he will miss most or all of next season as well, and there is a possibility that he never plays again. I really hate to say it, but we're likely in Marcus Lattimore territory with Teddy. This is literally the worst thing that could have happened to the team going into the season. Plus, of course, it was an 'in the heat of the moment" tweet. And, let's face it, there definitely is a rush on the part of reporters, etc. to get the "scoop" out there first.
