Which actor would have made a better Robert Baratheon than Mark Addy on GoT?

Are you joking? He seems to play more posh, polished British men. That's how he comes across at least. He would have to go completely against type.

He's an actor, he can play parts, have you ever seen him as Lenin or Sejanus? Neither of them are "British" or "posh". Beyond that it's my opinion, which I am entitled to just as you are to yours, I love how some folks on the internet figure that theirs is the only opinion that matters.

Where did I say you weren't entitled to have your opinion??? I just disagree with my own opinion.

The performance was a little cartoonish and I can't help but wonder how different the role would have been if Mark Addy had played the character a little bit darker. Overall, I thought he did do a fine job though. I would have loved to have seen Clancy Brown somewhere in this series. Anyone who has seen Rome knows that Ciaran Hinds, who ended up grossly misused as Mance Rayder, could have pulled it off. Anyone from Rome would have done well in this series. Ian McShane is probably a little too old for the role now and he ended up as Brother Ray/Septon Mabald this past season. If anyone has seen Deadwood then he obviously has a huge range and can have a commanding presence when he wants to. I'm more and more convinced that Stephen Graham could pull off anything and he kind of looks the part with long hair and a beard, although I've never seen him with both at the same time.

All excellent actors although I think the big issue you need to consider with Robert isn't just the character in himself but how he relates to other characters as really he's a launch pad into the rest of the story. With Beans Ned especially I think Addy really works well, I buy the friendship between them instantly despite it having a lot of bumps in it even early on. I think he also sells the need for a strong Hand of the King as well avoiding playing Robert as too dumb but also clearly as not as smart as Ned.

I thought Mark Addy did a tremendous job, the only real complaint I have about show-Robert is not Addy's fault:

He's not tall enough.  My memory of Robert in the books is that he's a big guy, quite tall, definitely bigger and taller than Ned, as I recall, but in the show Ned was taller than Robert, and Ned was almost as stout.

The reason this is not Addy's fault is b/c it could easily have been corrected, by giving him elevator shoes or whatever.  How often do we see his feet or legs?  Not very often.  They could have given him 3 or 4 more inches just by changing his shoes (and/or doing other camera tricks as well).

Otherwise, I have no complaints about Addy at all, and would not change the actor.

I agree that Addy did a terrific job as Robert Baratheon.  The only actor I might have liked to see in that role is Viggo Mortensen but then Robert would have to be played differently, perhaps a bit more moneyed, more strength, less bulk, taller, and more interior moments.  But I had zero issues with Addy.

Overall, I thought he did a really good job. He has a conversation with Cersei in one of the episodes that was one of the best acted scenes of that season. But if the question is, who else could have pulled that role off then I think that's an interesting question. It's difficult to find an actor that can both have a commanding presence and display some vulnerability.

I agree. Acting-wise thought Mark Addy nailed the character and Robert and Ned's friendship was completely believable. Wish they would have shown the character's height and physical presence, and the tv series could easily have done this through the methods you mention. Ultimately the show is different from the books, and the height of characters not as defined. I didn't imagine Cersei as she is on the tv series, but think Lena Headey is truly amazing in that role.

Yeah, a number of the characters have their heights off.

I'm a huge fan of NCW, but he's a few inches short to be Jaime, too.  They could have given him those inches of height as well, same as Addy/Robert.

Cersei was about spot on for me, though (you mentioned she was not as you imagined her, I believe).  I love Lena Headey's work, and to me Cersei is, hands down, the most physically attractive woman in the entire series.
