polishgenius
On 07/01/2018 at 2:55 AM, Darth Richard II said: I dunno, did Cornwell talk big in interviews about how much the Arthur Mythos sucked and his was going to be so much better and more adult? Can you give me a link to Grossman doing this about HP, by the way? Coz I've gone looking and while he does do the 'for grownups' thing I can't find him ever actually criticising HP and he doesn't seem to have any problem with Rowling, even though he once wrote a supposedly famously terrible Time profile of her that he's since been cringingly apologetic for but which I can't actually read because it's behind their paywall. Darth Richard II
I was unaware he apologized for the Time article. That was...itvwas bad.
Darth Richard II
Most of the stuff does come from that Time article though, which, at the nicest, you could call a hit piece. Just, ugh. But, apologies for said article aside, I still think his books suck.
lady narcissa
Lev Grossman absolutely loves Harry Potter. I've seen him at numerous Harry Potter related conferences in the past speak about this. His oldest daughter is named Lily. Time article about J.K. Rowling: http://www.accio-quote.org/articles/2005/0705-time-grossman.htm Blog posts/apology: http://levgrossman.com/2010/05/the-time-i-met-j-k-rowling-a-confession-part-one/ http://levgrossman.com/2010/05/the-post-about-the-time-i-met-j-k-rowling-part-2/ I'm really looking forward to his new novel. Darth Richard II
Well that's the craziest shit I've read all year, by far. Next GRRM will post about how much he loves Vox Day.
john
That’s it? What Lady N posted? That’s not a hit piece. You might say it’s an uniformative article but there’s nothing actually wrong with it.
Vaughn
I'll be interested to see how this season of the Magicians goes given that they've already used up a good chunk of book one and two. I am looking forward to edge of the world bit - I hope they keep that.
Jussi
http://levgrossman.com/2018/12/the-year-that-wasnt/ I spent a lot of this year working on a novel about King Arthur called The Bright Sword. I turned in a first draft of it in January and a second draft in September, but I figure it’s going to take one more major revision before I can really say I’m in the endgame. You wouldn’t think it would take this long but Arthur is just one of those many-layered multi-chambered subjects that it’s really hard to feel like you’ve come to grips with in any kind of a satisfying way. And it’s a very old story, and I want to feel like it’s getting traction on what feels like a very new world while still remaining true to its old-ness. Plus people have been writing about Arthur for so long, literally more than a thousand years. You look back at that huge long line of brilliant writers behind you, and they’re all looking at you, and you think jeez this had better be good.
