There has been some of that - but not all across the country. Yeah - I carry a roller that I use at the gym, it's not quite as solid as a full baton, but it's got some good heft to it. I have never liked clowns and I would not go after someone, but if someone comes to me I will make sure they know I am armed and that I perceive them as a threat.
