Ser Scot A Ellison
It is terrible here right now. I live in Columbia SC more than a hundred miles from the nearest blaze and I feel like I'm back in Spokane WA circa August 2015. I'm short of breath and the sky (though not as bad as that one terrible day in Spokane) is really really hazy. I'm wondering if we're going to get the apocalyptic skies we saw last year today. http://www.cnn.com/2016/11/12/us/southern-wildfires/
Mlle. Zabzie
This is just nature basically giving up and going out with a bang. But more seriously - I hope everyone in the affected areas is safe. Also hoping you all are getting some of the rain we are getting here down there. Ser Scot A Ellison
Actually we got a fair amount of Rain in Columbia on Sunday. I was hoping it would help with the fires. Apparently they did go far enough west.
Dr. Pepper
I'm in the Atlanta area and we have been under a code red air quality alert for almost a wek now. The smoke is really thick and we're also at least a hundred miles south of the nearest fire in N. Georgia. It's killing my lungs and i have two young children who are simply miserable. There's no escaping it, though, because the smoke is almost everywhere unless we leave the state, which I'm not allowed to do. It has been so dry, too. Not a drop of rain forecasted for the next week.
Ser Scot A Ellison
Dr.P, I feel you. Next rain on the forecast here is next Wendesday. National Weather Service is predicting the smoke to hang around hear until this weekend when the winds from a front should blow it away. I can't wait. Ded As Ned
I live in the western foothills of the Appalachias here in east-central Kentucky, so most of the fires are southeast of here. The wind shifted for a day last week that it was coming from that direction, so I know what you're saying... except you guys southeast of here get the brunt of the smoke. Hopefully the system coming through this weekend will take care of them. It has been exceptionally dry... I think it was about 2 months ago since I last had to mow the lawn. Dr. Pepper
The weather folks here are saying the system coming through could only make it worse because it's probably not bringing any rain, instead more dry air and winds. It is so so dry. Thankfully today we're having a bit of a break from the smoke. We've at least gotten outside without feeling like our lungs are on the verge of collapse. Ser Scot A Ellison
It's still bad here.
Dr. Pepper
Hoping y'all get some relief soon.
Ser Scot A Ellison
Me too. I'm now very glad we invested in good replacement windows and a decent air filtration system in my circa 1963 house. I can at least retreat indoors (at home) and it's not too bad. Inigima
I had no idea this was happening. Stay safe folks.
zelticgar
We even had a forest fire up by the Boulder Loop Trail section in New Hampshire. We rarely have fires that last more than a day or two but this one took a few days to get under control.
Dr. Pepper
I didn't even realize the northeast was in a drought also until I heard it on NPR yesterday. A front will be coming through tonight bringing dry winds. I assume this is going to exacerbate the fires in north Georgia making the smoke over half the state worse. This weekend is going to suck. Ded As Ned
Red flag warning here today, winds supposed to be 30-40mph, and the forecasted amount of rain blowing in behind the wind keeps going down.
Dr. Pepper
We've had some smoke free days which is nice, but it's still so so dry and the fires are still blazing. I have a friend in a community that has been evacuated. Still no rain in sight. How's everyone else doing?
Ded As Ned
From the news our little shot of weather the other day helped the workers to extinguish 20 of the fires, while another 20 are still not under control in SE Kentucky
Ser Scot A Ellison
The smoke has dissipated around here for now. I keep hoping for rain in the Mountains.
Dr. Pepper
A 10 acre fire on Sunday has grown into a 500 acre fire in Smoky Mountain National Park has forced the closure of US 441 through the park. Rain might be passing through some of the Southeast this week. Don't think it will be enough to combat any of the current fires.
Ded As Ned
We've gotten a little bit of rain over the last week here in KY... I think most if not all of the fires are out here in the vicinity. Hope the trend continues throughout the rest of Appalachia!
Switchback the Second
I heard last night that Gatlinburg had to be evacuated. G'burg is a bit of a shithole tourist trap, but it's right there at the beginning of the most beautiful park in all of America, so this is just very, very sad. The park itself is now closed too I'm hearing? Jesus, I hope there is some relief soon, that is a way too gorgeous piece of the country to burn up.
