The Anti-Targ
I don't know how I felt about season 1. It's not great TV by any stretch, but I still watched the whole season. I didn't end up thinking, it was a waste of my time, but while I will watch season 2 I didn't end season 1 frantically searching the internet to try to find out when season 2 would be coming. I can suspend disbelief enough to allow that the Grail has magical properties, within this near alternate reality. There's no need for fantasy to be a vastly different alternate reality (with dragons, and ice walls and undead and giants wandering around - not the wall wandering around of course) to allow for the suspension of disbelief. Indeed there's something to commend fantasy that is set very close to our historical reality. One thing I quite liked was that there's a secret, mostly Muslim but with Christian collaborators, order that is looking to protect, and protect the world from the miss use of, the Grail. It reflects a pre-crusade time where the relationship between Christian and Muslim was a lot more nuanced and there was more toleration of each by each. And I assume this order predates the Crusades within the story canon. It also reflects the fact that Islam recognises the legitimacy of Christianity as a divine religion, and Christ as a high prophet the originator of a new revelation. They do struggle with the whole only begotten Son thing, but IIRC the Quran doesn't dispute Mary's virginity.
