Mladen
Another year is passing by and with it, the movie critics and pundits are preparing for the Darwinian battle to get their hands on the gold statuettes. 2016 in many ways was interestingly crappy year, movies included. It seems that the pop culture has spoken and studios have blessed us with so little originality that it truly becomes absurd. The summer was one of the worst we had in years and everyone seems to be remaking something. But digging through the revivals, remakes, spinoffs and adaptations, one can find some truly amazing movies that can last for decades. And the noise following the couture, bling and the red carpet can sometimes be useful, if nothing, but to celebrate those movies that not so many people have seen. So, let's get started... Down below, I will list the current Goldderby.com experts' predictions for this year's Oscars (in 6 main categories - Motion Picture, Director, Lead Actor and Actress, Supporting Actor and Actress). Spoiler BEST DIRECTOR Damien Chazelle, La La Land Kenneth Lonergan, Manchester by the Sea Barry Jenkins, Moonlight Martin Scorsese, Silence Denzel Washington, Fences Denis Villeneuve, Arrival Pablo Larrain, Jackie Ang Lee, Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk Jeff Nichols, Loving David Mackenzie, Hell or High Water BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS Viola Davis, Fences Michelle Williams, Manchester by the Sea Naomie Harris, Moonlight Nicole Kidman, Lion Greta Gerwig, 20th Century Women Janelle Monae, Hidden Figures Felicity Jones, A Monster Calls Kristen Stewart, Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk Aja Naomi King, The Birth of a Nation Molly Shannon, Other People BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR Mahershala Ali, Moonlight Lucas Hedges, Manchester by the Sea Jeff Bridges, Hell or High Water Liam Neeson, Silence Dev Patel, Lion Michael Shannon, Nocturnal Animals Hugh Grant, Florence Foster Jenkins Issei Ogata, Silence Stephen Henderson, Fences Ben Foster, Hell or High Water BEST ACTRESS Emma Stone, La La Land Natalie Portman, Jackie Annette Bening, 20th Century Women Ruth Negga, Loving Amy Adams, Arrival Isabelle Huppert, Elle Meryl Streep, Florence Foster Jenkins Viola Davis, Fences Taraji P. Baitac
I know I'm just a Florida housewife but one thing that really reminds me of this is when nominations involve limited release movies that I may never get to see in my small town. Jackie is barely out and it's nominated. It seems like there's so much studio manipulation with these awards. It's no longer just "for your consideration." Now it's consider this, this second, so you can nominate before Christmas even though the film will be widely released (if that,) in January. Nictarion
Haven't seen La La Land (and don't really have any desire to), but I would have thought HoHW had a good shot at a best screenplay award. Oh well.
Isis
Why on earth isn't there a category for best music in a TV series? Because Ramin Djawadi could have won it for either GoT (based on S6) or Westworld (which is IMO pretty close up there with Clint Mansell's soundtracking abilities). I'm going to see La La Land on Thursday. But there are still so many other award-nominees still to see.
HexMachina
LaLa Land was on my to-see list anyway. Hope it is good. I've listened to some of the music and loved it. Not really watched a good musical for a while. I do love Emma Stone though. The problem with the movie awards is that I can never really say how I feel about them because in many cases the damn things haven't even been released yet in the U.K. Edit: whoops, this is only for the movie results

Isis
Pleased to see both Nocturnal Animals and Arrival up for cinematography, especially the former. Going to see La La Land tomorrow, trying to keep an open mind, but difficult with the level of hype around it. Gosh, ok, two stellar performances there. I see why people are knocked back by the film. It's not what I expected AND I expected it to have a happy ending but...it didn't. It made me sad. I don't want to live in a world where Ryan Gosling gets old. Veltigar
I'm going to see La La Land the day after tomorrow. I'm curious to see whether I'll love it. I'm pretty sure I'll like it, but part of the subject matter (LA rules) still doesn't look promising. Right now, based on everything I know I'm going to root for Moonlight for all the awards. Haven't seen it or many other films on this list, but you just know La La Land is going to sweep the damn oscars with the masturbatory 'LA is great, everyone wants to be here, aren't we great' subject. If you haven't seen it, maybe you should be careful. Cause I felt this exact way after reading an article about "hurr durr, Hollywood sucking its own dick" before seeing it and it really is oversold imo. It's not a movie about Hollywood. Hollywood is there, insofar as nostalgia is there (nostalgia for Jazz is imo more prevalent) and you can't avoid Hollywood, but it's more a story about artistic endeavor. It's a very lazy critique that's spread far and wide by reporters with a narrative in mind in my opinion. But yes, La La Land is the popular kid to root against. It was good for me but not worth months of suspense till it sweeps the Oscars. I've already forgotten most of the music and pieces.
