A press conference was recently held in Beijing where the EmDrive technology was discussed. This press conference was held by China Academy of Space Technology (CAST), which is a subsidiary of the Chinese Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) and the manufacturer of the Dong Fang Hong satellites.

"National research institutions in recent years have carried out a series of long-term, repeated tests on the EM Drive. NASA's published test results can be said to re-confirm the technology," said Dr Chen Yue, head of the communication satellite division at the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST), told the International Business Times UK.

"We have successfully developed several specifications of multiple prototype principles. The establishment of an experimental verification platform to complete the milli-level micro thrust measurement test, as well as several years of repeated experiments and investigations into corresponding interference factors, confirm that in this type of thrusters, thrust exists," he told IBT UK.

China claims that it has been conducting researches on EmDrive for the past five years, but no proof or paperwork is there to aid their claim of carrying out a successful mission using the technology, Science Alert reported.

Does China have any reason to lie about this?  Could this be the "Epstein Drive" that opens up the Solar System to real human colinization?

Not so fast. The Chinese claims are apparently somewhat short of proving the concept. While the EMDrive has received a lot of attention in recent months, even the NASA study merely demonstrated some rather small potential thrust figures (although spurious effects cannot be completely ruled out yet). Most importantly, the NASA Eagleworks paper that passed peer review did so without providing a theoretical explanation for their claimed effect. They suggest various possibilities, but essentially had to admit that they don't really have a clue how their thruster generates its force.

My preferred explanation - if the effects turn out to be real - still remains that they are generating accidental Woodward-Mach effects, as outlined in the analysis below.

Agree, not so fast. IMO the whole idea violates the conservation of momentum. I'm no expert, but their quantum plasma vacuum explanation doesn't fly, either.

It also seems to me that any positive force generated, if it's real and not an artifact, would require an awful lot of energy.

There are a few possible reasons. First, if it turns out to be real, they want to be able to claim credit for it (at least internally). This is not likely, but stranger things have happened. Second, it may be that there are factions in China who want resources for this and are exaggerating just as the factions here are. Finally, they may be deliberately leading us on a wild goose chase (I don't think this is likely).

Since it violates conservation of momentum, I still wouldn't bet any money on it, but that two completely distinct groups confirm experimental effects is somewhat intriguing.

Assuming, for the sake of argument, that the EM drive really is completely above board, the answer is still no. At least at the moment it is. The demonstrated thrust is tiny, significantly weaker even than current ion drives. The hardest part of any large space project is getting things into orbit in the first place and for that you need very powerful engines.

Porno for Pyros?

Didn't we send some kind of culture time capsule deep into space?  I worry that it was full of Beatles songs but absent this.

The math is beyond me and the author admits his work is incomplete.  However, this is the hypothosis that theory types elsewhere find the most credible and least offensive for an EM drive that actually works. (regarding 'Conservation of Energy' and 'Conservation of Momentum.'    Comparisons are sometimes made with the 'Woodward/Mach' theory.
