Star Wars: Episode VIII predictions

Recommended Posts

A huge space station will blow up.    All the other scenes will also give you a profound sense of deja vu.   As if there are no new cards, only a slightly reshuffled deck.    Some "edgy" things will happen to distract you from realizing the movie lacks any genuine content or compelling characters, so lots of shiny flashy boom swoosh will rush in to fill that void.  Unfulfillingly.  Alas, the modern treatment- - -movies that make money for the studio without any risk, and so provide the audience with no reward.   The audience does not care about that, though, bless them, so this model seems to work out well for everyone.

Miller and Lord fired from Han Solo. And yeah, it really apparently was a firing.

This hits me a lot more than it should. I was really looking forward to their take on Star Wars, and instead it's probably Ron Howard or Kasdan.

I was hoping this would be fun. I think the worrying thing when these kinds of announcements are made is that movies are becoming somewhat homogenous - a bit like how it's often hard to tell who directs a given episode of a TV show (usually when you noticed it's because the director is really good). When a film franchise becomes something where no part appears indespensible it feels like a little bit of the magic is gone.

Still, Ant-man worked out fine and Fant4stic was an example where the split should have occurred or no changes made.

There were parts of the article that suggested some filming has already occurred. In that case does it mean we'll still see footage from them?

Honestly, I have never been fond of the idea of a Han Solo origin movie, so I kinda hope this one ends up terrible just so we won't get any more unnecessary stand-alone movies.

They should have just done a Dash Rendar movie if they just wanted a new Han Solo.

I was reading some more details/"sources" on the firing and there was something about Kasdan saying "Han Solo is sarcastic and selfish not comedic" and I can easily see how the directors could have made Han Solo into a Star Lord quip factory. Also something about the directors not being slaves to the script to allow for comedy to naturally arise. I can see how these things may have become a concern if the film was seeming more comedy than SF. Still a shame as the Lego movie was really interesting.

Ron Howard as a replacement seems a strange choice in that he's a well known director but not well known for sci-fi. Besides Willow which I guess sort of fits the lucasfilm star wars style

I thought they were a strange choice anyway. I've never seen The Lego Movie (nor do I have desire to), but I'm not sure how directing a couple 21 Jump Street movies qualified them to do a Star Wars movie in the first place.

It was sounding more and more like a SNL parody. Had The Lego Movie been Lord and Miller's only work I wouldn't have been too skeptical. It's the Jumpstreet films that had me worried. I have much more faith in Ron Howard.

I got dragged to one of those and ended up really liking it. Their involvement was the only reason I was curious about this because as mentioned above on paper it sounds like a really lame idea.

He does some experience of movies set in space, even if Apollo 13 is very different to Star Wars

I just looked on IMDB and apparently he was also meant to be directing an adaptation of Neal Stephenson's Seveneves, but I guess that might change if he's going to be working on this film instead.

Still, Ant-man worked out fine

That's the problem. Ant-Man was fine, a bit more than fine actually, but it wasn't brilliant, and Edgar Wright would clearly have blasted that material out of the stratosphere, as he did with the three Pegg movies and Scott Pilgrim (and Baby Driver is looking spectacular right now, with outstanding early reviews). But he's also a director with a very recognisable visual style, whilst Marvel/Disney prefers something more predictable with their films. Wright's Ant-Man would have been brilliant, but it also might not have quite felt part of the MCU.

That was a shame as the MCU is actually freer to experiment and to jazz things up a bit (and after Dr. Strange and Guardians 1 & 2, I wonder if 2017 Marvel would actually have been happy to have let Wright do his thing). This move seems to be saying that Star Wars can't be even that free-wheeling, which is a bit of a shame, especially with Rebels showing a great variety of stories you can do in the setting.

All of that said, Miller and Lord were apparently bringing a bit too much of their fourth-wall-teasing, self-referential humour to the picture, which I can see being a big problem tonally with a Star Wars live action film.

Parts? The film was like 85% finished. They started shooting it in February and it was due to wrap in the next three weeks, with some reshoots penned in for August and September. If the new director and Kennedy find they can't use most of that material, they're going to have remount the whole film which will be both incredibly expensive and also very awkward, as it means no Star Wars movie in 2018 and they might end up losing castmembers: Clarke will be back shooting the final Game of Thrones season at the end of the year and most of the other cast have gigs lined up.

The Lego Movie was a very entertaining picture, regardless of it being aimed at kids, and it did have some amusing Star Wars cameos in it. The Jump Street movies were quite funny, if a bit on the disposable side.

FINN WILL BE AT A CASINO

IN STAR WARS

LIKE JAMES BOND BUT WITH ALIENS

THAT IS LIKE 1/3rd of ALL THE THINGS I DID WITH MY ACTION FIGURES AND HAN SOLO

I didn't have much in the way of action figures, but on the playground Imperial fighter Ace Jace Amorell more than once had to team up with less than savory rebel scum to pay off gambling debts.

Oh man, this one time the Estenian cartel was involved and well... let's just say that negotiations turned aggressive.

While I tend to agree that Edgar Wright's "Ant-man" had the potential to be brilliant we actually will never know. I'm a big fan of Scott Pilgrim but would Marvel have been happy with that level of success for an MCU film? Although I'd argue the fact it was an MCU film would have got more bums on seats automatically. The other thing is that some of the scenes in Ant-man I swore would have been Wright's idea turned out not to be.

I am really looking forward to Baby Driver though.

With 85% of the film done I wonder if they can even claim another director is doing the film unless they reshoot a lot of footage? It would potentially be akin to WB saying Joss Whedon directed Justice League.

I'm trying to remember if Han Solo was ever really going to be out in May? Given the fact they seem to like December, I'd just assumed it would be Decemeber 2018. I guess that window is still possible unless it results in them tripping over some other big film in that time-slot.

Why the hell not? Were you traumatized by LEGO as a child?  If not then see this movie. It's one of the best films of the last decade.

Lucas did write Willow and worked with Howard on it,  and Madmartigan has some of the Han Solo swagger.

Plus Howard has some Scifi cred with Cocoon and of course working with Mork from Ork.

No...just no.

Just doesn't seem like my kind of thing? There's so many other movies I'd rather watch before it? It's about Legos? That enough reasons for you? :P

Yes, they had me at LEGO. My gf at the time also took some convincing to see it, but once she did she saw the light. Had "Everything Is Awesome" stuck in her head for weeks. Repent and rent the film, ye sinner!

The odd thing about the film is that someone actually sat down and thought "how can we use lego as a metaphor to structure a screenplay" and then constructed a story that really works. Honestly, more thought went into this film than the vast majority of blockbusters out there an it's why it was a big success.

Concepts like Transformers, the MCU/DCEU and the like would massively benefit from the same level of thought. There's only Pixar spring to mind as having films where they really make the concept work.

Battleship it aint.
