I completely disagree about Sicario falling short of being great. The cinematography was fantastic, Blunt and del Toro were as good as usual, and that bridge scene was as suspenseful as anything I've seen in a movie in years. I loved it.

I don't know... I really wanted it to be great but it definitely fell short for me. Not quite disappointment but not satisfaction either. If you take out the 3rd act, this movie definitely becomes unsatisfactory / flat out disappointing. I watched it after seeing Prisoners, which I loved and couldn't believe didn't get more hype. They maintained the twists, character performances and tension and then paid off by closing it all out right up until they cut to black. Sicario didn't do that for me and the key was Emily Blunt's character imo (from a writing perspective, not performance).

The dinner scene left me breathless. Del Toro was such a force in that movie.

Just got out of Silence. I thought it was absolutely brilliant but very emotionally draining. Garfield was super impressive.

just like the book I thought after Rodriguez apostasizes the movie kinda trailed off so the last fifteen or so minutes were the weakest of the flick for me for sure.

I've heard nothing but good things about Silence. It's awesome Marty is still on top of his game at 74 years old.

Are any of the Hulu originals worth watching?  For some reason I reactivated hulu this month, but this platform is so useless most of the time.  Constantly freezes, this across all devices and even different ISPs.  But since I paid for this month, figured I should at least attempt to get use out of it.  So, any of the originals decent?

I liked The Path. Aaron Paul and Michelle Monaghan are members of a cult run by Hugh Dancy. I don't think it'll win any awards but I found it compelling. Of course, if you don't care for Aaron Paul it probably won't be up your alley.

I also enjoyed Difficult People, but I find Billy Eichner yelling at people to be hilarious. YMMV.

Episode 8 of Sneaky Pete was awesome with and amazing ending.  I wanted to stay up and watch the last two, but behaved myself and went to bed.  Just watched episode 9, and I could say exactly the same thing - awesome and amazing.  Will be disappointed when episode 10 is finished in 52 minutes.

What'd you think of the finale?

I watched The Nice Guys which got a lot of recommendations in the "films of 2016" thread, and I thought it did have some very amusing scenes in it, usually involving Ryan Gosling's character. The obvious comparison is with Shane Black's earlier comic film noir Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, I think it could be funnier than that film, although it's possible I'm thinking that because I've watched it more recently.

Please Like Me is pretty great. Not a Hulu original but it is an exclusive.

Think I'm going to put this on my list. I haven't really given any of the Amazon originals (outside of Red Oaks) a chance and I'm curious.

You definitely should give this a look (and The Man in the High Castle).

Fantastic.  It's like a fusion of Justified and Banshee, and I sure fans of either will love it.  I forgot to mention last night how badass Margo Martindale was in episode 9.

Seriously for the lookiloos

I totally did not see they were still running the con on Vince coming at all.  Especially using the fact that they were using Mukherjee without his knowledge.  I knew something was up with the "bump" in the restaurant though, and how they kept keeping Eddie in Vince's clutches.  Although I never would have thought they would have the balls to do redo the same con that got their friend killed.

In episode 8/9 the scene with Winslow walking Ellen around the house was super creepy.  The setup for next season was also fantastic, as I really enjoyed the vibe Dockery was putting out and can't wait to learn more about real Pete's real mom.

I kind of like Deadbeat...

It did look great, lots of nice aerial shots. As for the bridge scene, I was expecting more to be honest, because people had gone on about it so much and it was tense, yes, no arguing with that. But did it contain more suspense than anything I have seen in years? I don't think so (I will try very hard to think of something more suspense-filled). Again, I was just expecting something more from it. Also, it felt like it was over pretty quickly. And yes, very good performaces from del Toro and Blunt, but not great performances.

I think I am viewing this from a director-POV - because Enemy and Arrival both had me thinking and discussing them for a long time afterwards but with Sicario I was just left feeling 'ok, that was good, what's next?'

Ok, I finished The Killing this weekend. I liked the overall story but it seemed to drag on after a while. Some really interesting characters in it. Season 1 does a really good job showing the impact a murder can have on a family. Had they not done some of the twists in the plot I think it would have been better, but I still enjoyed the series.

Ok, I tend to go to a movie each Saturday morning during the winter and this weekend I made a bad bad bad choice. I knew going into it that Sleepless was just going to be a popcorn action movie, so my expectations were set relatively low. OMFG was this stupid. The plot makes no sense, the things that happen make even less sense, the things people do... I almost left, two people actually did leave it was that bad. Not that anyone else here is dumb enough to go see this like I was but I will put two irritating things in spoilers anyway

Spoiler

Michelle Moynahan character is shown from scene one with a cut on her cheek bone from a beating she took before the show takes place. And yet in the final scene that same exact cut is show as fresh with a butterfly to hold it closed.

The wife is a nurse, she rushes to the casino where shit is happening, just happens to have a gun in her car, hears automatic gunfire, rushes towards this gunfire just in time to save her husband and kill a bad guy. Then this bad ass woman hears gunfire and cowers behind a car and cries and screams like this is all new to her.....right after she pulled a Rambo and ran toward gunfire and killed someone...WTF. It was around this time the two people got up and left.

The son gets his left hand crushed, then a few scenes later is driving a sports car with a manual transmission, steering the tight turns with that same crushed hand.

To top it all off, this shitpile of a low expectation movie has the balls to clearly set itself up for a sequel.

I have only walked out on one movie before (Psycho remake in 1998-9?) but wish I had walked out on this one.

Finished the first season of Travelers. I enjoyed most episodes, the ones that closely followed the featured team of Travelers. However, the season finale (ep 12) was an absolute clusterfuck. In the end, none of the character knew who to trust. I was so thoroughly confused that all desire to watch season 2 (if it is ever made) had disappeared.

I stopped three different times in the third episode, picked up and tried again the next day or three, and quit for good after the third bail.

By the way, the drug addict character's actor appears in the first ep of Frontier and his characters gets killed quickly, thank goodness.  I wish he'd never been born for Travelers!

Continuum was exciting, suspenseful, and had actors we liked watching.  The dialog was snappy.  We knew, via Kiera, at least for her, what was at stake.  None of this is happening in Travelers.  Why o why did they spend the time and effort and money for this cheap imitation?

I just finished Train to Busan. Like I said in the 'Year in Movies: 2016 edition' thread, it's everything World War Z wanted to be. Definitely the best zombiefilm since 28 days later. Train to Busan is engaging throughout, thoroughly exciting and has a cool setting. The best thing about the film are the characters though. Films like this almost never get those right, but this one does. It's really great when you are able to get invested in the faith of several characters, something which I usually don't experience while watching a horrorflick (most of the time quite the opposite). Obviously, the film isn't perfect. There is some really stupid stuff in there, but all in all this is the type of film were those flaws don't really diminish your enjoyment and emotional investment. I'd definitely recommend it.

Went to see A Monster Calls last night. Overall I thought it was a pretty good adaptation. Sigourney Weaver, especially, was just how I imagined the grandmother to be. And Liam Neeson makes the best tree monster. The kid was ok I suppose.

Work was really slow today, so I finally got around to watching Dirk Gently.  I made it through 3.5 episodes, and it's really, really good.  So much better than that version a few years back.  I don't know which is more true to the source material, but this one is definitely better.

We zipped through it in a weekend. It took a while for me to get the 'tone' of it but it was actually pretty well balanced.

Last night I went to see Christine and there was a Q&A with Rebecca Hall, who does an amazing job in the lead role. A very thought-provoking film. Would definitely recommend.
