My American mind pronounces the shit out of that "r", which sounds ridiculous and completely non-sexy. And I can sympathize with British readers for whom "ass" evokes the barnyard animal and might be plagued by intrusive unsavory images when they are meant to be titillated. It's to the point where this word alone is enough to warrant different British and American imprints of novels.
