In the books you read that several times that "moat cailin is the key to the north" or holding the north  

 

why is that? To the south you have house reed. To the north east you have the manderlys. the iron born have enemies to the north and south.

In the absence of a large naval invasion, the only way to transport a large army from the South to the North is up the causeway.

Ok. Can a mod delete this thread. After remembering what they did. They did exactly what I thought they would do. Didn't realize a river runs basically to moat cailin.

The layout of MC makes it very difficult to assault because archers from each tower can pick off attackers on the other two, and like Mel said, the geography of the region provides a chokepoint where only a relatively small force can attack at one time -- at least from the south.

But I think we should also remember that no one has tried this for thousands of years. The place has deteriorated quite a bit since then, and the armies today are larger and, one would presume, their siege technology is better.
